Chapter 345: Chapter 345 : Reclaiming The Twin Heirs (3)

Mingyu nervously entered the grand hall, her arms tightly wrapped around the baby basket.

At the hall, two people were waiting for her.

One was Zhang Fengxi, who finally overcame his grief enough to claim his children.

The other one was Xie Jianshen, who was kneeling on the floor with his younger brother’s lifeless body cradled in his arms. The sight quickly caused Mingyu to choke with sobs.

"Master," she wailed. "Master..."

"Mingyu, come," Xie Jianshen’s commanding voice echoed through the hall, demanding Mingyu to step closer.

Zhang Fengxi’s heart raced as Mingyu placed the basket in Xie Jianshen’s hand. From his vantage point, he could only catch a glimpse of the soft muslin curtain that shielded his sons from view.

"Here you go," Xie Jianshen stated, thrusting the basket toward Zhang Fengxi. "But remember," he added with a sharp edge to his voice, "I still have the right to summon them to the Golden Dragon Palace whenever I please."

"Sure."

As long as his sons remained under his care, he was willing to tolerate Xie Jianshen’s overbearing presence.

With trembling hands, Zhang Fengxi gently lifted the curtain, revealing the delicate faces of his sleeping sons. Time seemed to stand still as he gazed upon their angelic features.

A wave of overwhelming love washed over him, filling his heart with a warmth he had never experienced before. At that moment, he knew that he would dedicate his life to protecting and nurturing these precious beings.

"Hi..." he whispered, his voice choked with emotion.

Reaching into the basket, Zhang Fengxi gingerly touched his sons’ fragile bodies, careful not to disturb their peaceful slumber. Their soft skin felt like velvet beneath his fingertips, and he couldn’t resist the urge to gently stroke their tiny heads.

As Zhang Fengxi’s thumb lightly brushed against their foreheads, a radiant glow illuminated their skin. Two distinct sigils emerged, one bearing the mark of the mighty dragon clan, the other of the ferocious tiger clan.

He heard about the twins bearing different sigils from his parents, but it still came off as a surprise for him when he saw the roaring dragon sigil with his own eyes.

Zhang Fengxi’s eyes traced the newborn dragon baby’s delicate form. His heart swelled with an emotion so profound that it threatened to burst the very seams of his being. The tiny dragon baby, practically a miniature replica of Xie Jianyu, was Heaven’s precious gift to them, and also to the Xie family.

Heaven granted the Xie family another chance to revive its bloodline.

This child was Fuxi Palace’s beacon of hope. The heir to the Fuxi Palace Master’s seat.

"Ummm..."

The dragon baby’s eyes fluttered open with a yawn. He stretched himself inside the basket before he caught a glimpse of his father’s face. After some time, a tiny smile played on his lips, and a cascade of giggles erupted from his chest, reminiscent of the tinkling of wind chimes.

"Daaaaa~"

His twin brother, the tiger cub, was not as amused by the sudden noise. His face, adorned with an unruly mop of black hair, scrunched up in protest. He raised a chubby hand and swatted his brother playfully, only to receive a swift kick in retaliation.

"Oh, my babies... My darling sons..."

Overflowing with gratitude, Zhang Fengxi surrendered to the flood of emotions that coursed through him. Tears, like glistening diamonds, streamed down his cheeks, tracing paths of pure joy and unadulterated love. The composure he had so diligently maintained crumbled, replaced by an unrestrained expression of his overwhelming affection.

With a tenderness that belied his imposing stature, Zhang Fengxi gently lifted his twin sons from their basket.

In a gesture of unadulterated love, he pressed his lips against their soft, downy cheeks, his kisses raining down like a gentle shower upon their angelic faces.

"They are perfect," he told Xie Jianshen with a hoarse voice that was ragged by emotions.

"Of course they are," Xie Jianshen scoffed. "How could they be any less than perfect? My Little Yu was the one who gave birth to them."

Xie Jianshen turned to Mingyu.

"Go back with General Zhang Fengxi to Fuxi Palace, Mingyu. Take the two wet nurses with you."

Before long, they all marched toward the palace exit.

Outside, a cloud carriage from Longjing Palace was waiting for them to re-emerge.

Despite her husband’s insistent pleas to remain within the carriage’s comfort, Lady Song opted to stand vigil outside, her hands wringing incessantly as anxiety gnawed at her heart.

Naturally, Zhang Zhiyuan could not let his wife stand alone outside. He thus stood stiffly next to Lady Song while praying for the best outcome of the situation.

Upon spotting Zhang Fengxi emerge from the palace with a throng of attendants following close behind him, Lady Song’s heart leaped with a surge of relief so intense that she nearly collapsed into a swoon.

"Fengxi, oh goodness. Oh, the babies..."

With a heart brimming with anticipation and longing, Lady Song reached out her trembling hands towards the wicker basket, her fingers yearning to cradle the precious life that lay within.

When she finally regained her claim over the twin babies, she let out a happy sob.

"My grandsons... My cute, cute grandsons... We are going to raise the both of you well."

Zhang Zhiyuan wrapped his arms around his wife and the basket.

"Everything is good now," he whispered. "Dear, let’s bring them back to Longjing Palace first. They need to rest."

Zhang Fengxi shot his parents a bitter smile. He lightly shifted Xie Jianyu’s body in his arms and then declared, "Mother, Father, I am deeply sorry for disappointing you, but the babies shall not return to Longjing Palace. I will raise them in Fuxi Palace, just as my wife would have."

The elder couple’s eyes flew wide open in shock.

Mingyu’s jaw fell open in disbelief.

Even the wet nurses could not help but gape at the general.

"You WHAT??" both Lady Song and Zhang Zhiyuan cried out in unison.
