Chapter 336: Chapter 336 : Goodbye, Fengxi (4)

Jiang Muchen’s heart pounded like a frantic drum against his ribs as he made his escape from Fuxi Palace.

In his entire life, he had never stolen anything, let alone kidnapping two babies.

To make it even worse, one was the future heir of Fuxi Palace while the other was the future heir of Longjing Palace.

Oblivious to the turmoil gripping Jiang Muchen’s heart, the babies, in their blissful ignorance, reveled in the novelty of their aerial journey.

A wisp of the cold wind caressed the delicate skin of the infants’ faces, gently rousing them from their slumber.

The soft breeze, carrying with it the whispers of the awakening world, swept away the remnants of sleep, leaving behind a trail of alertness and curiosity.

Their tiny arms stretched towards the boundless expanse of the sky, their tiny fingers reaching out to grasp the elusive beauty of the azure canvas above.

When Jiang Muchen peered into the basket, his heart swelled with a mix of adoration and apprehension.

"Dear gods and deities in heaven," he mumbled to himself.

The sight of the two infants, their faces illuminated by sparkling smiles, nearly caused him to lose his balance atop his spiritual mount.

He had never laid eyes on such exquisite beings, their beauty a testament to their radiant mother, Crown Prince Xie Jianyu, from whom they had inherited their almond-shaped eyes and captivating smiles.

All of a sudden, Jiang Muchen did not feel too bad about kidnapping his little cousins anymore.

Zhang Fengxi as the father of the babies was not in the right state to take care of them.

These babies hailed from esteemed lineages. The important job of raising and educating them could not possibly be left to mere maids and servants.

Therefore, Jiang Muchen might as well take them back to Shuiran Palace.

He would raise them as his own, making sure that they grow up prim and proper, just the way Xie Jianyu would have them.

Of course, there was only one person who could help him with this important task -- his mother, who practically raised Xie Jianyu himself.

Xie Jianshen woke up from his slumber a few hours ago. Although there was nothing he would love to do more than return to Fuxi Palace to continue mourning for Xie Jianyu, his body refused to cooperate.

Sluggish and exhausted both mentally and physically, he could not even drag himself to a cloud carriage, let alone kneel at Xie Jianyu’s coffin.

Besides, Zhang Fengxi refused to let others touch Xie Jianyu’s body. Those who dared to challenge the distraught husband most likely had to pay with their lives.

Lacking the motivation to do anything during this mourning period, Xie Jianshen spent the next few hours at the garden patio while contemplating the choices he had made in this life.

The Shuiran Palace Mistress was staring at an innocent frog perching on a lotus leaf in a daze when he heard his son’s calls.

"Mother! Mother!"

The frog quickly jumped into the pond when Xie Jianshen looked away, lest it became the arbitrary target of Xie Jianshen’s intensive gaze again.

"... What is it? Why are you so loud?" Xie Jianshen furrowed his brows in annoyance.

Jiang Muchen rushed to his mother with the baby basket clutched in his hand.

"I... I took the babies with me."

Xie Jianshen widened his eyes in disbelief.

"You did what???"

Overwhelmed by the suffocating weight of grief, Xie Jianshen’s mind had momentarily relinquished its hold on the two precious lives that Xie Jianyu left behind.

He quickly rose to his feet and took the baby basket from Jiang Muchen’s hand.

"Hi," he greeted the babies inside with a soft voice.

The babies responded to Xie Jianshen’s presence with a symphony of gurgling noises, their tiny hands reaching out toward him in an unspoken plea for affection.

Their eyes, wide and expressive, sparkled with a charm that could melt the coldest of hearts, their gaze a reflection of the pure innocence that still existed in a world often marred by sorrow and strife.

"Goodness."

Tenderly, Xie Jianshen reached into the basket, his fingertips gently brushing against the delicate skin of the newborn children. Their premature arrival had resulted in bodies smaller than other newborns, their frames as fragile as the petals of a newly bloomed flower.

With a playful spirit, Xie Jianshen tickled their tiny stomachs, his touch as light as a feather. In response, the babies erupted in a symphony of gurgling noises and infectious laughter, their innocent joy momentarily eclipsing the weight of grief that burdened Xie Jianshen’s heart.

As the echoes of the babies’ laughter filled the air, a transformation began to unfold within Xie Jianshen. The furrows etched upon his brow by grief gradually softened, replaced by the gentle lines of a smile that had long been a stranger to his face.

At that moment, the weight of his sorrow seemed to lift, momentarily overshadowed by the sheer joy that emanated from these two precious beings. His eyes sparkled with a newfound light, a reflection of the hope that had rekindled within his heart.

Jiang Muchen, a silent witness to this transformation, felt a wave of relief wash over him. The tension that had gripped his heart since the tragic events of the past few days began to dissipate, replaced by a sense of peace that mirrored Xie Jianshen’s newfound serenity.

The peaceful time was never destined to last for a long time, for a servant came rushing into the garden with urgent news.

"Palace Mistress, Prince Muchen, Longjing Palace Master and Mistress are here with a group of soldiers!"

The light in Xie Jianshen’s eyes dimmed when he heard the news.

Guilt quickly took possession of Jiang Muchen’s heart, who cut a grimace in anticipation of his mother’s anger.

Against his expectations, Xie Jianshen did not flare up.

Very calmly, the omega took the basket into his hands and let it dangle from one of his arms.

"Come, Muchen," he said, beckoning his son to come closer. "Let us welcome the tigers into our humble abode."
