Chapter 331: Chapter 331 : Hello, Babies (2)

As the midwife’s nimble fingers completed the final stitches, Xie Jianyu’s consciousness gently nudged back to reality. A wave of panic surged through his veins as he realized his distended belly had vanished, yet his precious newborns were nowhere to be seen.

"Ah... Hiss..."

With a trembling hand, Xie Jianyu braced himself against the bedside, attempting to rise from the bed. However, his body, weakened by childbirth, betrayed him, and he collapsed back onto the bed with a heavy thud.

"My babies," he whispered. "My babies..."

As Xie Jianyu was wallowing in distress, the door to the bedroom was pushed open and two people walked past the door frame.

"Little Yu, what are you doing?"

"Master!!!"

By exerting every ounce of energy he possessed, Xie Jianyu managed to lift his head from the pillow. His gaze was drawn towards the two bundles of joy nestling in the arms of Xie Jianshen and Mingyu.

"My babies," he whispered, his voice raspy yet filled with an abundance of love. With a longing that transcended his physical limitations, he extended his arms toward them, yearning to hold their tiny bodies close to his own.

With measured steps, Xie Jianshen and Mingyu approached the bed, the twins cradled securely in their arms. As they neared the bedside, Xie Jianyu’s eyes, glistening with unshed tears, locked onto the angelic faces of his baby boys.

The sight of his sons, so small and vulnerable, filled him with an overwhelming surge of love and emotion.

Xie Jianshen handed over the baby in his arms to Xie Jianyu, who immediately showered the tiny face with gentle kisses. He then extended his hand after the other baby in Mingyu’s arms.

"Careful now," Xie Jianshen cautioned his younger brother as Mingyu eagerly reached out to hand over the baby in her arms. Concerned for Xie Jianyu’s well-being, Xie Jianshen gently guided him to lean against his side, providing support and stability as Mingyu carefully placed the other precious bundle of joy into Xie Jianyu’s trembling arm.

Xie Jianyu showered his sons with an abundance of kisses, his lips lingering on their tiny cheeks, foreheads, hands, and feet. He craved their warmth, their innocence, their very presence, knowing that their memory of him would fade as they grew older.

And because he was unable to accompany them on their journey ahead, he poured his heart and soul into each kiss, each caress, etching their faces into his mind, savoring every moment he had left with them.

"I love you," he whispered with a broken voice. "I love the both of you."

The babies’ faces crumpled slightly as they were pulled out of their peaceful slumber rudely. One began to sob and whine, while the other began to wail earnestly.

"Ssh, shh..."

Xie Jianyu cuddled them close.

"Don’t cry, my babies, don’t cry..."

The soothing aroma of their mother’s pheromones, a comforting fragrance of warmth and love, washed over the restless infants. Their cries, once sharp and piercing, softened into gentle whimpers.

"Little Yu, you gave birth to one dragon and one tiger," Xie Jianshen remarked.

"Eh?"

"Take a look for yourself."

Xie Jianshen brushed against the forehead of each baby with his thumb gingerly, letting the sigils on their foreheads speak for the clan they belonged to.

Xie Jianyu’s jaw dropped open in amazement when he saw Fuxi Palace’s roaring dragon sigil on one of the babies’ foreheads.

"The elder brother is a tiger, while the younger brother is a dragon."

"Oh..."

A soft smile laced Xie Jianshen’s lips.

"I don’t know how it came to be. Maybe Heaven decides to show mercy to the Xie family and grant us another chance to revive the family bloodline."

Pink color climbed onto Xie Jianyu’s cheek when he recalled the night he and Zhang Fengxi conceived the babies. A fleeting notion danced at the edge of his awareness, hinting at the underlying mechanism behind the mystifying phenomenon.

But of course he could not speak of it. He could never speak about it.

One baby started to cry, and his brother quickly followed.

"They are hungry," Xie Jianshen decided.

"We have called upon two wet nurses, one for each child. Mingyu, let the wet nurses come to feed the princes. We do not want them to starve."

With a tenderness that mirrored his own, Mingyu carefully lifted the babies from Xie Jianyu’s embrace, gently placing them into a large, cushioned basket.

As she did so, Xie Jianyu’s gaze remained fixed upon his precious sons, his eyes reflecting a profound longing that pierced the very depths of his soul.

The thought of parting from these innocent beings, of leaving them behind forever, was akin to tearing a piece of his own heart away. Even the briefest separation felt like an eternity, a chasm of emptiness that threatened to consume him.

"Master, do not worry."

Mingyu jumped to her feet enthusiastically. "I will guard the little princes with my life."

"Little Yu, you should rest."

Xie Jianshen pressed a kiss on his younger brother’s forehead.

"I am worried about Mingyu and the wet nurses. Let me just watch over them."

Xie Jianshen left, and Xie Jianyu was left alone again. He believed himself to have fallen into a light slumber when an ethereal voice echoed in his ears.

[Crown Prince...]

Xie Jianyu opened his eyes and turned toward the source of the voice.

Caihong perched on a small table by his bed, cocking its head from side to side as it gazed upon Xie Jianyu.

"Goddess... Has the time already come...?"

[No. You gave birth at dawn, so you still have many more hours left until midnight arrives.]

"Oh."

[I wish to thank you personally for your hard work in giving birth to the Star of Unblemished Virtue.]

A single tear fell from Xie Jianyu’s eyes.

"I wish that I could watch them as they grew up."

[...]

"What if something happens to them as they grow up...? What if they need their mother by their side?"

A torrent of heart-wrenching sobs erupted from Xie Jianyu’s chest, his body racked with a grief so severe it threatened to shatter him.
