Chapter 289: Chapter 289 : Xie Jianyu’s Pain (2)
Zhang Fengxi’s facial muscles turned numb when he heard Mingyu’s ominous words.
"Gone? Gone, how? She was fine when she got back from Shuiran Palace!" the alpha snapped.
Mingyu put both hands at her waist and glared at Zhang Fengxi in response to his insensible words.
"And in what mental state? Prince Zhang Fengxi, I thought that you were a good person. It seems that I am largely mistaken."
"..."
Great, ever since he colluded with Xie Jianshen to abort his own child, he similarly took the blame for whatever atrocities happened to Qingyun in Shuiran Palace.
"You know what, just... let me see my wife. Mingyu, I am your master’s husband. If he wishes to reject me, then I want to hear it from his mouth and not yours."
The aura that emanated from Zhang Fengxi sent chills down the guards’ spine. Mingyu clicked with her tongue in dissatisfaction.
"Master said that..."
"Mingyu, let him in."
Xie Jianyu was in his bedroom, but just now he spoke directly into Mingyu’s ears. The maid looked around in confusion. She thought that she probably misheard, but Xie Jianyu’s instruction was clear and precise.
"This... Master has allowed you to enter."
The two guards exchanged confused looks, but they eventually stepped aside to let Zhang Fengxi walk past the gate.
Zhang Fengxi was on his way to Xie Jianyu’s bedroom when the omega’s voice called out to him from within the study.
"In here, Zhang Fengxi."
The study door stood ajar, inviting him in. Zhang Fengxi hesitated for a moment, then slowly pushed it open.
Xie Jianyu sat behind the desk, his lean form reclining against the high-backed chair. His gaze was fixed on the wooden beams that crisscrossed the ceiling, his expression pensive.
Xie Jianyu’s face was a mask of serenity, but his eyes held a storm within. Zhang Fengxi’s senses were on high alert, every nerve jangling with trepidation. He knew that he should turn and flee, but he refused to pay them any heed and proceeded to step closer to Xie Jianyu instead.
"Jianbao, I am here."
"Mn. What do you want?"
How to best coax an upset baby dragon? Zhang Fengxi also did not know. He could only do his best and use his body to extinguish the burning pain in Xie Jianyu’s heart.
Zhang Fengxi lowered himself onto the seat between Xie Jianyu’s legs, his knee pressing gently against the omega’s inner thigh. He then wrapped his arms around Xie Jianyu’s waist and pulled him close, burying his face in the omega’s neck.
"Baby, if you are sad or angry, just let it out. Don’t keep it inside."
"..."
After some nerve-wracking minutes, Xie Jianyu raised his hands and put them around Zhang Fengxi’s back.
"Hmm."
"It’s fine, Jianbao. Just let go... ack!"
Xie Jianyu’s fingers dug into Zhang Fengxi’s back like talons, sending a sharp jolt of pain through the alpha’s body. Zhang Fengxi flinched, but he didn’t pull away.
"I am sad."
"U-Understandable."
"I am angry."
"I am here if you want to talk about it."
"We already talked."
"..."
Zhang Fengxi was at a loss for words. He considered offering himself as a practice straw dummy for Xie Jianyu to vent his anger on, but the thought of being beaten to a pulp was unappealing. After all, he still cherished his life.
"Uh."
Xie Jianyu released his hold on Zhang Fengxi with a sudden shove and dashed out of the study, leaving Zhang Fengxi stunned in his wake.
It took Zhang Fengxi a few seconds to recover from his shock before he finally got to his feet and chased after Xie Jianyu.
Outside, Xie Jianyu heaved convulsively, his stomach emptying into the large jar he held tightly in his hands. His body shook with the effort, and his face twisted in a mask of agony.
"Jianbao!"
Zhang Fengxi sank to his knees beside Xie Jianyu. He gently gathered Xie Jianyu’s long hair away from his face, his fingers trailing soothingly down the omega’s spine in an attempt to relieve the nausea.
"I thought that you had already stopped vomiting. What happened?"
Xie Jianyu dabbed at his lips with a silk handkerchief.
"It started again yesterday."
Perhaps the pain of losing Qingyun had taken its toll, for behind Xie Jianyu’s cold and aloof facade lay a gentle and caring soul.
"Baby, what do you need me to do for you?" Zhang Fengxi asked. "Anything is fine."
"There is nothing left to do," Xie Jianyu mumbled into the handkerchief. "I have finished everything."
"... Everything?"
That was remarkably fast. Usually, when someone passed away, her corpse would be put into a coffin for seven days, until her last soul departed for the Underworld.
Qingyun was one of Xie Jianyu’s beloved personal maids, and she had been gone less than a day. Did Xie Jianyu not care enough for her to hold a funeral arrangement for the deceased girl?
Ah.
No, he was mistaken.
The ones to make such arrangements should be the family members and not the employer. When Xie Jianyu said that he had finished everything, he probably was saying that he already returned Qingyun’s body to her family.
Zhang Fengxi cuddled Xie Jianyu to his chest.
His poor baby.
Pregnant mothers were not allowed to attend funerals because it was considered inauspicious and might impact the luck of the baby in his belly. Zhang Fengxi pressed a kiss on Xie Jianyu’s forehead.
"Baby, what if I go in your stead?" he offered.
"... Go where?"
"To Qingyun’s funeral?"
Xie Jianyu straightened his back and stared at Zhang Fengxi with his brows knitted together in confusion.
"What are you talking about?"
Zhang Fengxi stared at Xie Jianyu in return.
"Qingyun, your other maid? You are not allowed to attend the funeral due to your current condition. Let me attend in your stead and offer the family a few words of bereavement."
Xie Jianyu closed his eyes and took a deep breath. Then, he opened his eyes again and shot daggers at Zhang Fengxi.
"Qingyun didn’t die, you fool."
