Chapter 270: Chapter 270 : The Previous Life (2)
Longjing and... Wuyang Palace?
Xie Jianyu’s heart lurched to the bottom of his heart.
Why?
Xie Jianyu watched his other self announce that he was going out to the battlefield.
"Your Majesty, no!!!"
"Your Majesty, you just gave birth," Mingyu tried her best to dissuade her master from facing the enemies.
"Your body is very weak at the moment. Please don’t go... please don’t go, alright? Let’s just escape through the secret tunnel..."
Xie Jianyu knew what his other self would answer before the latter even opened his mouth. He was not the type to run away from a confrontation.
With an unusual calmness, the man who had just given birth donned his armor. Xie Jianyu followed behind him, standing with the soldiers of Fuxi Palace as the gate swung open and the enemy troops became visible.
A sea of black armor and gleaming weapons greeted them. The enemy army was vast, and Xie Jianyu’s heart sank. But his other self stood tall, his face resolute.
Zhang Fengxi stood together with Liu Yichen. Zhang Fengxi had become the Supreme General, and Liu Yichen the Grand Chancellor...
No, that was impossible, Xie Jianyu thought to himself.
Zhang Fengxi had just been promoted to the general position. He couldn’t possibly rise to the Supreme General position this fast.
And Liu Yichen, thanks to his omega son, he would never have a chance to rise higher in rank.
This was not the future.
To be exact, this was not the future that awaited him.
This was the future of the other Xie Jianyu. The one who just gave birth to his child.
[Crown Prince, maybe it’s best if you don’t take a look.]
Xie Jianyu turned to his right and saw a little girl of maybe ten years old standing next to him. Despite her youthful appearance, she wore the facial expression of an adult. Her long, silver white hair was braided together into an intricate hairstyle that extended to her ankles.
The little girl’s eyes were a deep, piercing blue, and they seemed to see right through Xie Jianyu. She wore a long, flowing white robe with seams that were decorated with silver embroidery.
"Goddess...?"
The Goddess of Fate and Destiny gave him a subtle nod.
Xie Jianyu stubbornly watched the scene unfold before him.
"I want to watch," he said. "I need to watch."
His view was blurred by tears when he saw what happened next.
Zhang Fengxi killed him.
He died within an hour after giving birth.
"Aaaaaaaarrrrghhhhhhh...!!!"
Xie Jianyu tossed out a pained scream that no one could hear. The scream echoed through his mind, a thousand times louder than any physical sound. It was a scream of agony, of despair, of loss.
"How cruel," he said in between sobs. "How cruel..."
Zhang Fengxi tossed the other Xie Jianyu’s corpse to the ground as if the latter meant nothing to him.
Xie Jianyu watched in horror, his heart shattering into a million pieces. Was this the same Zhang Fengxi who loved him? The one who whispered sweet words of love into his ears? The one who bent his knee before him and took him as his wife?
Xie Jianyu fell to his knees, his hands clutching at his chest. He felt like he was suffocating. He couldn’t breathe.
The omega closed his eyes and tried to block out the sight of Zhang Fengxi’s cold, uncaring face. Alas, the image was burned into his mind. He would never be able to forget it.
The Goddess sighed.
[I told you not to look. You were too stubborn for your own good.]
She waved her hand and the scene before them broke into shards, replaced by another.
Far from the din and chaos of the battlefield, Xie Jianyu found himself in a realm he had never before laid eyes upon. Suspended in the vast expanse of the sky was a circular platform of shimmering stone, its surface radiating an ethereal glow. As he knelt upon its pristine surface, he could feel the immense power emanating from within, a power that pulsed with the very essence of creation itself.
This was the Goddess’ private sphere, a sanctuary nestled within the ninth layer of heaven. From this vantage point, she could observe all that transpired within the three realms, her gaze penetrating the veil of existence to reveal the hidden workings of heavens’ will.
The Goddess herself was standing next to him.
Some distance away from them, the other Xie Jianyu stood together with the other Goddess.
One look sufficed to tell that the other Xie Jianyu was merely a soul without a corporeal body.
[When you died, your cultivation have already reached the Soul Transformation stage. Your soul remained intact even after death and could exist outside of a living body.
That being said, you were on the right track to ascend to godhood.]
"..."
Xie Jianyu’s soul spoke to the other Goddess in a low voice, "I want to see how my son is doing," he begged.
The other Goddess shook her head.
[You have left the world of the living. Focus on your ascension, forget everything else.]
"I just need to make sure that my child is doing fine. Please, Goddess. This is my last wish."
The other Goddess furrowed her brows in discomfort.
[Will you let go of your attachments to your son afterward?]
"Yes!"
The other Goddess waved with her hand, and a gigantic mirror manifested itself from thin air.
[See for yourself,] the Goddess said. [And then leave everything behind.]
The other Xie Jianyu was initially joyful when he got to see his son again. Zhang Fengxi had brought him back to Longjing Palace, which meant that Zhang Fengxi was willing to acknowledge the child. Xie Jianyu was relieved.
But then, things took a turn for the worse.
The baby died from poisoning. Lady Song died from excessive sorrow. And Zhang Fengxi killed himself out of guilt.
"Noooooooo...!!!"
Xie Jianyu watched the soul of his other self crumble on the ground.
"Why??? Whyy???"
He did not know what hurt more -- dying in Zhang Fengxi’s hands in such a brutal manner or having his son poisoned and dying before he was even one month old.
Xie Jianyu no longer had tears to shed. Heart numbed from excessive pain, he merely watched the soul of his other self writhe in agony.
The other Goddess placed a gentle hand on the soul’s shoulder. Her eyes were filled with compassion, but her voice was grave.
[Crown Prince, Fire Guardian Jiang Muchen has ascended the Dragon Throne and become the next Heavenly Emperor.]
Despite the agonizing pain in his heart, the soul closed his eyes and rejoiced in the revelation. He had known a long time ago that Jiang Muchen was destined for greatness, and he was proud of his nephew.
"That is good," he said softly.
Unfortunately, the Goddess’s next words were far from good.
[A few years from now, another war will break out between the Heavenly Realm and the Demonic Realm. Jiang Muchen will die along with half of the Heavenly Realm’s inhabitants.]
