Chapter 252: Chapter 252 : Restitution (2)
Xie Jianshen rose to his feet. He walked toward a tall, multi-tiered wooden rack that adorned the entire wall behind him. Various jugs and pots and vials of different sizes, colors, and types stood neatly on each level, albeit without any tags or descriptions.
This was Xie Jianshen’s foolproof method to avoid thievery. He was the only person who knew the extent of his collection, shelf after shelf.
Xie Jianshen’s hand moved toward the third shelf from the top. He removed a small, inconspicuous, brown clay pot from a neat row of similar pots, took off the lid, and then took a sniff at the content.
Once he was sure that it was indeed the item that he was looking for, he returned to his seat with the clay pot tightly clutched in his hand.
Zhang Fengxi stared at the clay pot with a dark expression.
"What is that?"
"The child is yours and Little Yu’s," Xie Jianshen smoothened the ends of his sleeves. "I have no right to dictate your decision."
Xie Jianshen set the clay pot on the table and tapped at its lid.
"This medicine is made from a special plant that not many know about. It will allow the fetus to slip out of its mother’s womb gently. Little Yu will not feel any pain."
"..."
"The earlier, the better," Xie Jianshen added while pushing the medicine in Zhang Fengxi’s direction.
Xie Jianshen barely finished his words when Zhang Fengxi suddenly jumped to his feet.
"Who is there?!"
The general bellowed in the direction of the door.
Both of them rushed toward the door and opened it, but there was no one outside.
All they saw was the small courtyard that lay at the center of Xie Jianshen’s private residence.
"Was that just your imagination?" Xie Jianshen asked in a low voice as he stepped out to the verandah. His eyes darted left and right, but not a single soul was around.
There were neither statues nor trees or walls to hide behind. Only a small garden full of plants and herbs.
"No," Zhang Fengxi insisted. "There was someone. I heard a gasping sound of a female."
Shuiran Palace was full of female maids.
"No need to worry, even if a maid heard our conversation, she would not be able to share the information outside the palace without any consequences."
Coming from Xie Jianshen, this was a scarily believable statement.
"Did you infect every single person in Shuiran Palace with Gu Worms?"
Xie Jianshen sneered at Zhang Fengxi.
"What a baseless accusation. Do you have any evidence to support your claim?"
Zhang Fengxi shot the man before him a wary look. Did he even need evidence? This was the very person who stuck him with a Gu Worm years ago.
A while later, the two men shut the door and returned to the chamber.
Not a single movement was seen outside of the chamber.
Underneath the wooden floor, a maid was lying on her stomach. Eyes round from shock, she swallowed her saliva a few times to digest what just happened.
Mingyu was used to run to Shuiran Palace to ask for Xie Jianshen’s advice whenever Xie Jianyu fell sick.
This time, too, she came with a basket to collect some medicine to treat her master’s fever.
She did not plan to eavesdrop at all, but when she heard the word "baby", she just had to stop and listen.
When she heard Xie Jianshen’s last words, she almost dropped her basket out of fright.
When Zhang Fengxi noticed her movement outside, she almost dropped dead then and there.
Thankfully, the dragon in her acted quickly. Before she knew it, she already burrowed into the crawl space under the wooden floor. The front part of her clothes and her cheeks were soiled with mud, and the basket that dangled from her arm a while ago was now upturned some distance away from her.
The maid was shaking violently.
She could not believe it. Her master’s most trustable ally... his only brother... was conspiring with his husband to kill his unborn child.
But why?
Tears started trickling down her cheeks.
Mingyu wiped her tears away with determination.
Crying was useless. Her master would know what to do with the information.
First of all, she had to escape.
She had to get out of Shuiran Palace now.
But how?
Xie Jianshen was both smart and suspicious.
He only needed to take a look at her once to know that she was the one who eavesdropped on his and Zhang Fengxi’s conversation.
The maid shivered.
Help.
She needed help.
Her master needed help.
The baby needed help.
If going out at the front side was impossible, then she should head to the backside.
Mingyu crawled toward the opposite end as fast as she could. With limited space to move about, the trip was both arduous and daunting.
She did not know how long she had been dragging herself ahead before she finally saw light at the other end of the crawl space.
She was unable to see anyone outside. There was only an unfamiliar smell that pervaded the air.
Mingyu wrinkled her nose. Did she somehow land near the garbage incineration area?
It was fine.
The garbage incineration area was located some distance away from Shuiran Palace.
Relief invigorated her small body. She was going back to her master!
Praying fervently for safety, Mingyu gathered all her courage and pushed herself out of the crawl space.
She barely got her head out when she was yanked out of the crawl space rudely by her collars.
She was so frightened that she did not dare to let out a single sound.
Mingyu raised her head to look at the person who pulled her out.
It was not a person at all.
It was a gigantic lion.
After it pulled Mingyu out of the crawl space, it sniffed at her with a lot of interest.
Apparently, Mingyu’s smell was pleasing to its nose, because it then started dripping saliva from its mouth.
When it yawned, it showcased two rows of big and sharp teeth. Sharp enough to rip her apart.
Mingyu opened her mouth and let out a blood-curdling scream.
