Chapter 219: Chapter 219 : The Morning After (3)
The succession of Fuxi Palace Master position. It was not until then that Zhang Fengxi realized that the next Fuxi Palace Master had to be selected from the other noble families of the dragon clan.
Xie Jianyu would be the last person from the Xie family to fill the seat.
A layer of sadness covered Xie Jianyu’s bright eyes, giving him an air of gloominess.
"Jianbao..."
Zhang Fengxi caressed Xie Jianyu’s cheek.
The omega lifted his gaze and smiled at Zhang Fengxi.
"It’s fine. It is unavoidable. I came to terms with losing the palace master seat when my gender was exposed."
Although the Xie family had to lose the palace master position, the dragon clan’s reign over their vast territories must continue.
Xie Jianyu’s decision was going to affect the internal politics within Fuxi Palace for at least two generations to come. It was thus necessary to not only appoint the right person but the right noble family to succeed the palace master position.
Xie Jianyu was not feeling well enough to ride on Wangshu, so he and Zhang Fengxi took a cloud carriage to return to Fuxi Palace.
When the cloud carriage landed in the front courtyard, the newlywed couple was greeted by the entire palace staff.
"Congratulations to His Majesty the Crown Prince and His Highness Prince Zhang Fengxi on the most auspicious wedding! May the harmonious union last thousands of years!
May the marriage blossom like flowers and grow as full as the moon!
May the happy couple soon give birth to alpha sons!"
The last congratulatory remark dampened Zhang Fengxi’s joy visibly. Thankfully, Xie Jianyu did not take notice of his unusual reaction.
"Thank you, everyone," Xie Jianyu responded with a smile. He took Zhang Fengxi’s hand and led him to his bed chamber. Outside of the bed chamber, the backyard had been transformed into a sea of red orchids.
Overcome with a celebratory mood, the palace staff had taken the initiative to arrange the flowers to form two gigantic Xi characters.
Zhang Fengxi whistled in admiration as he watched the end result.
"Nice," he praised. "The entire backyard really gives off a wedding vibe. How do you like the flowers, Jianbao? I will make sure to send new flowers to replace the wilted ones."
Xie Jianyu pursed his lips.
He wanted to tell Zhang Fengxi that he mistook the red orchid for Xie Jianyu’s favorite flower, but then he had to explain why he even mentioned "red orchids" when asked about his favorite flower.
This dumb husband was supposed to understand what he meant!
In the end, Xie Jianyu chose to say nothing.
"Fengxi, I need to go over the list of noble families in the dragon clan. Why don’t you rest in my bedroom for a while? The kitchen staff will soon prepare lunch."
Zhang Fengxi left the backyard and stepped closer to Xie Jianyu.
"Can I also take a look at the list of noble families?"
Xie Jianyu stared at him.
"You don’t know them. What do you need the list for?"
"I don’t need it, I just want to take a look," Zhang Fengxi replied smoothly. "Unless... Jianbao, are you worried that I might stir some trouble within the dragon clan?"
"No, of course not."
In addition to the fact that the two palaces were now linked by marriage, Longjing Palace was known to be strictly righteous. The palace masters who hailed from the Zhang family were especially persistent in following the clan’s teachings and rules.
The couple then went to Xie Jianyu’s study to inspect the list.
Xie Jianyu took out a book from one of the shelves and opened it in front of Zhang Fengxi.
The book was essentially a huge clan tree that connected the noble families through marriages.
The names of the past, present, and future family heads of every noble family were written in blue ink to denote the importance of their positions within the clan.
In his past life, Zhang Fengxi sent a spy to Fuxi Palace to make a copy of this record.
He diligently studied all the noble families within the dragon clan and successfully approached one of them.
It was thanks to this noble family that Zhang Fengxi’s troops were able to dismantle Fuxi Palace’s defense and take over the dragon clan’s territories within three days.
Xie Jianyu’s finger slowly wandered from one blue name to another.
When his finger stopped at a certain name, Zhang Fengxi immediately made a comment, "Not him."
Startled, Xie Jianyu looked up at Zhang Fengxi in surprise.
"Why not?"
Because this was the greasy old man who betrayed his palace master to secure the seat for his family, Zhang Fengxi thought bitterly.
"He is not good. Sneaky, wicked, and ruthless."
Xie Jianyu pursed his lips in displeasure.
"You are talking about one of my distant relatives."
The man in question, Ye Penglai, was the descendant of an omega daughter from the Xie family who married into the Ye family. He was Xie Jianyu’s first cousin, once removed.
"I know, but you should listen to me. That man is no good."
Unlike the Xie family who struggled to give birth to an alpha son, the Ye family’s bloodline was strong. This was partly the result of their commitment to only marry omegas from within the dragon clan.
By doing so, the Ye family eliminated the supposedly adverse effect of having other clans’ omegas give birth to their heirs.
Ye Penglai had always thought that the family who occupied the Fuxi Palace Master’s seat should be the Ye family, and not the Xie family.
Xie Jianyu paused a while as he listened to Zhang Fengxi’s opinion.
"The Ye family has always kept to themselves. When did Ye Penglai offend the Longjing Palace?"
"He did not offend the Longjing Palace or any other palace. Like you said, the Ye family always kept to themselves. They had no ties with other clans," Zhang Fengxi answered with a helpless tone.
"..."
Xie Jianyu’s had a conflicted expression on his face.
"Fengxi, is there something that you are not telling me?"
Oh, there are a lot. And yet, if I tell you, you might think that I have gone crazy.
Zhang Fengxi clenched his jaw and said nothing. He removed Xie Jianyu’s hand from the ancestry record and took Xie Jianyu in his arms instead.
If he could not tell Xie Jianyu directly, then he was going to make Ye Penglai reveal his treacherous side on his own.
