Susu, the leader of the Flower Demon clan, also known to her clan members as "Eldest Sister Susu", was just done with her meal when she was startled by an earsplitting noise close by.

BOOM

"What was that?" She gathered herself and stormed out of her cave in a flash.

Outside, the demons and demonesses were running around in panic.

Susu grabbed one of her younger members and shook her.

"Yanyan, what happened???"

"Pardon the intrusion, we are here to pick up someone."

A cold voice announced himself, sparing Yanyan any need to explain the situation. The young demoness cried out in anguish while hiding behind Susu instead.

Susu glared at the two intruders who dared to disturb their peace. Deep wrinkles appeared on her forehead as she took note of the heavenly aura that emanated from the two young men.

"Heavenly Realm!" she hissed angrily. "We have not done anything to deserve this sudden ambush! And you claim yourself to be righteous!"

"We would not have done so if your minions did not attack us first."

Zhang Fengxi pushed the two demonesses who tried to kidnap them on the way to the ground. Rongrong and Xiangxiang landed in front of Susu, their eyes puffy and their cheeks tear-streaked.

"Eldest Sister, wahhhhh...!!!" Rongrong cried out.

"Eldest Sister, these men are so mean, waaaahhhhh...!!!" Xiangxiang howled.

Susu dragged her two younger sisters to their feet.

"Foolish girls!" she spat. "Did I not already teach you to avoid Heavenly Realm residents???"

"But Sister, you ate a Heavenly Realm resident a few hours ago, and you said that he was very delicious..."

Rongrong gasped audibly when Susu glared at her.

"Which Heavenly Realm resident did you eat?" Xie Jianyu asked. He clenched his Winter Frost in a menacing way as he advanced toward Susu and the other Flower Demons who hid behind her and cried from fear.

Susu licked her lips lasciviously.

"Young man," she batted her eyelids seductively, "we demons are not used to rejecting easy meals, especially if said meals delivered themselves to our doorsteps. Don’t you agree?"

A sharp sound cut the air, and in the next moment, Xie Jianyu already pressed his Winter Frost against Susu’s neck.

"We Heavenly Realm residents are not used to showing mercy toward demons. Answer my question now or die."

Susu sneered at the Crown Prince. She held both hands up and mockingly pursed her lips.

"Very well. His corpse is still there under the magnolia tree," she said while pointing in a direction.

Xie Jianyu grabbed Susu and dragged her with him as they rushed toward a group of magnolia trees that grew at the backside of Susu’s cave.

Several corpses, all of them male, were laid side by side beneath the trees with their eyes closed and their hands solemnly folded before their chests. After their entire life force had been sucked out completely, only wrinkled, dried-up shells were left.

The sweet and fruity scent of the magnolia flowers at full bloom perfectly masked the stench of slowly rotting flesh that grew more intense when people drew closer.

Among those corpses, there was one corpse who wore the same cloak that Liu Wenyuan wore in the Three-Eyed Realm Wanderer’s projection.

Zhang Fengxi approached the corpse and observed the cloak that it was wearing. It was just an average traveling cloak, nothing extraordinary.

And yet, there was something that certified that the corpse was indeed Liu Wenyuan.

A jade pendant hung at the corpse’s waistband. Engraved on it was the howling wolf sigil of Wuyang Palace.

"It is indeed Liu Wenyuan," Zhang Fengxi said with a hollow voice. His chest felt stuffy. Liu Wenyuan had done a great sin against Xie Jianyu, but he was after all a prince of one of the nine palaces at the Heavenly Realm.

He did not deserve to die in this place.

Alone, with his life force sucked out of his body by these monsters.

Xie Jianyu gazed at Zhang Fengxi’s dispirited expression for a while before he averted his eyes in pain.

His grip on Susu unwittingly slackened.

The leader of the Flower Demon clan watched the two young men’s grim faces alternately. She could barely hide her joy.

Oh, what a feast!

What a wonderful mix of sorrow and jealousy!

Zhang Fengxi turned around in shock.

Xie Jianyu was thrown to the ground by the force of the explosion. There was a thick rose-colored cloud of smoke in place of Susu.

"HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! PARDON ME, YOUNG MEN, BUT WE DO NOT INTEND TO ACCOMPANY YOU ANY LONGER. SORRY FOR NOT SENDING YOU OFF, HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!"

Following Susu’s example, the other demons and demonesses also scattered away in a kaleidoscope of smoke that danced and swirled in the air.

Within minutes, the now-empty demon lair was filled with smoke.

It obscured the two young men’s vision and made it hard for them to breathe.

To make matters worse, the smoke contained potent poison that the Flower Demons used to subdue their victims.

Zhang Fengxi pressed a hand against his mouth as he rushed toward Xie Jianyu. He almost tripped on the latter, who was still sitting on the ground.

"Xie Jianyu, are you alright? Cough! Cough!"

The alpha dragged Xie Jianyu to his feet.

"Cough... cough... I am alright. Let’s get out of here first," Xie Jianyu answered. His eyes stung from the poisonous smoke.

Zhang Fengxi lifted Xie Jianyu into his arms and stepped off the ground lightly. The two men soared into the sky and left the suffocating veil of smoke behind.

They went back to where they left Wangshu and Xiao Huang behind.

The two animals were beyond relieved to see their masters back safe and sound, despite the crestfallen look on their faces.

"I am sorry for what happened to him," Xie Jianyu said to Zhang Fengxi.

After all, Liu Wenyuan and Zhang Fengxi used to be a couple. Other than that, Xie Jianyu did not know how to ease Zhang Fengxi’s loss. Any other words felt like empty gestures, neither sincere nor genuine.

The corners of Zhang Fengxi’s mouth turned up slightly, but his eyes remained downcast. His voice was heavy with sadness when he spoke, "There is a beginning, and there is an end. Nothing lasts forever."
