Chapter 168 : An Omega’s Rejection
Chapter 168: Chapter 168 : An Omega’s Rejection
He hated it.
He said, he hated it.
What exactly did he hate? Or whom?
Zhang Fengxi was afraid to think about, let alone hear the answers to those questions.
The alpha was lost. In a complex and insoluble enigma by the name of Xie Jianyu.
When Commandant Zhang was lost in thought, the ones who suffered the most were the soldiers who trained under him.
"Reporting to the Commandant! We have finished the morning training!" a captain reported to Zhang Fengxi, who was tapping at his spear absent-mindedly.
"Hm? What have you all done so far?"
"Uhh, all the regular exercises?" the captain answered dumbly. Commandant Zhang was not usually this hard to please, he thought. Did the commandant possibly sleep on the wrong side of his bed the previous night?
"Hmm."
Zhang Fengxi peered over the captain’s shoulder and gazed at a bunch of soldiers some distance away. After their usual morning training, most of them were relaxing under the comforting shadows of huge trees. Some were taking swigs of water from their leather pouches, some were laughing and chatting with each other.
They did not look tired at all. They even looked happy. Too happy.
Zhang Fengxi’s face darkened. A strange glint flashed through his eyes.
"Repeat everything from the beginning," Zhang Fengxi snapped with a cold, stern voice. "I want to check every single soldier’s performance in every discipline."
"Yessir... Huhhh???"
Zhang Fengxi glared at the captain. "Any objection?"
"N-no! Not at all! I will go and get them ready now!!!" the flabbergasted captain quickly answered.
Zhang Fengxi’s 3000 soldiers went through a military drill so arduous and taxing that at the end of the day, they were already very thankful for simply being alive.
Although the five captains under him were originally very unhappy with Zhang Fengxi’s unnecessary intervention, they came to see that the commandant was truly a talented individual!
Zhang Fengxi did not take long to recognize the innate talents and skills of each soldier. He put all the misplaced soldiers back in their supposed section and even organized a competition among the groups to test their teamwork.
Meanwhile, outsiders were entirely baffled to see the display of hard work. Just what was going on with Zhang Fengxi and what was he planning to do with his soldiers?
Late in the afternoon, after his men went back home to rest. Zhang Fengxi sat under a tree at the barrack to draw the new formation of his troops. That was when a curious Wu Shenxia decided to drop by and pop some serious questions.
"Zhang Fengxi, what is happening? Did I miss something?"
As far as she knew, General Fu did not make any announcement about an upcoming major war.
"Nothing," Zhang Fengxi looked up from his notes and replied with a grin. "I just felt like rearranging my troops today."
"Hahaha... bored because you have nothing much to do recently?"
Wu Shenxia took a seat next to Zhang Fengxi and stretched her tired body from side to side.
"Arghhhhh." Zhang Fengxi’s grin disappeared quickly. He clawed into his head out of frustration when he recalled what brought about this hardworking bout.
Wu Shenxia chuckled.
"What is it? We are friends, you can talk to me."
The younger alpha gave his comrade a grim look.
"Wu Shenxia, has an omega ever told you that he hates your touch, your hug, and your kiss?"
Stunned, Wu Shenxia stared at Zhang Fengxi for a while. And then, she raised her hand to her lips and rubbed them in order to prevent them from curling up.
"... Are you laughing at me?" Zhang Fengxi glared at her.
"No, not at all," Wu Shenxia said, but then she broke into thunderous laughter.
"....."
"Hahahahahahahaha!!!! I can’t... If your underlings hear that you torment them because of a single omega, they are going to be very disappointed..."
"Ssssshhhh!" Zhang Fengxi hissed. He looked around in alarm, just in case one or more of the five captains were still lingering around to hear Wu Shenxia’s words.
"I thought you said that we were friends!" Zhang Fengxi scowled at his so-called friend, who laughed at his face at the first best opportunity.
"You are right." Wu Shenxia cleared her throat and then schooled her expression to a serious one in repentance. "Sorry about that. Now, which omega dared to tell you that?"
"... I can’t tell you," Zhang Fengxi said in reply. It was embarrassing enough without Wu Shenxia knowing the identity of the said omega.
"It does not matter who the omega is -- you need to leave that omega alone at once."
A heavy feeling settled on Zhang Fengxi’s heart, as if a huge boulder just manifested itself from thin air and dropped to the bottom of his stomach.
"Why?" he heard himself asking. "Why should I do that?"
Wu Shenxia folded her arms and raised her eyebrows at Zhang Fengxi, as if the latter were an ignorant boy who just differentiated into an alpha.
"An omega’s rejection is final. You know that it is against our empire rules to force ourselves on omegas."
"Technically, it is not a rejection," Zhang Fengxi argued. "Maybe I did it wrong."
The arch of Wu Shenxia’s eyebrows grew even higher.
"Zhang Fengxi, the omega disliked your touch, your hug, and your kiss. I don’t think that it is an invitation to perform better."
Wu Shenxia patted Zhang Fengxi on the shoulder.
"It’s alright, we have all been there. You are a splendid rising star in the military, the future Longjing Palace Master. There are very few omegas who would reject your advances, despite your -- allegedly -- poor techniques."
Zhang Fengxi pulled his lips into a thin line.
"I did not say that my techniques were bad," he said in self-defense. "I just said that maybe I could do better."
Wu Shenxia laughed.
"You are free to improve, but bear in mind that omegas could report alphas for harassment. You don’t want to be stuck with such a bad reputation."
"..."
Wu Shenxia gave Zhang Fengxi a playful slap on the back.
"Chin up, young man. We all need to chase our wives. Good luck to the both of us."
Zhang Fengxi squinted at Wu Shenxia. Stories that revolved around Wu Shenxia spoke about her heroic actions and not her romantic escapades. The female alpha’s last sentence piqued Zhang Fengxi’s curiosity.
"Do you by chance have someone in mind?"
Wu Shenxia snickered. She was not as discreet as Zhang Fengxi.
"Yes. I am thinking of pursuing the Crown Prince with the intention to get married."
