Chapter 158: Chapter 158 : The Bird’s Judgment (1)

"Squeee!!! Squeeee!!!"

All attempts to remove the bird from Xie Jianyu only caused the bird to cry out hysterically.

Zhang Fengxi was speechless.

"Maybe we can coax it with some food," Song Weiyang suggested.

"I came here to ask you what kind of food it might want to eat, Uncle."

"Any kind of seeds, nuts, and fruits should do, no?"

"Apparently not."

Xie Jianyu took out a fresh apple from his qiankun bag and offered it to the bird. Originally Wangshu’s treat, it was way bigger than the bird’s head, but it pecked at the apple with gusto.

"..."

"..."

"I didn’t know that birds like apples," Zhang Fengxi said.

"Well, people learn every day, Nephew," Song Weiyang quipped smoothly. "Excuse me, Crown Prince. Can I have the apple, please?"

Xie Jianyu handed the apple over to Song Weiyang, who then tried to coax the bird to his side.

"Come, come, little bird. Look, I have a tasty apple for you," Song Weiyang said in a honey-sweet voice.

"Squeee!!! Squeee!!!"

The bird protested with all its might. Its beady eyes were locked on the apple, but it still refused to leave Xie Jianyu’s side.

"You try. You are its owner after all." Song Weiyang gave up. He passed the apple to Zhang Fengxi.

Said owner waved the delicious treat in front of the bird back and forth, but he was equally unsuccessful. Even worse, the bird turned its tiny head away in a haughty manner.

"Don’t test it anymore," Xie Jianyu said. "It is hungry, let it eat."

As soon as Xie Jianyu took the apple back, the bird started pecking at it gluttonously.

"Eat slowly," Xie Jianyu said while stroking the bird’s head with one finger. "You are going to choke."

"Sometimes it’s not the food but the feeder," Song Weiyang said while suppressing a giggle. "Your Majesty, I am impressed. You seem to be good with animals in general."

And Zhang Fengxi, who rolled his eyes hard next to Song Weiyang, unfortunately, was not.

"Glad that the feeding issue was resolved, but I need the bird to listen to me," Zhang Fengxi grumbled.

Otherwise, how was the bird going to serve its purpose? When it was prancing around far far away within Fuxi Palace’s four tall walls?

"What about I take this bird and I compensate you with another?" Xie Jianyu offered.

"No can do, Your Majesty. This bird is a very special one."

Xie Jianyu looked a little disappointed, but Zhang Fengxi could do nothing about it.

"Hmmm. In that case, I have no other choice. Let me lend Fengxi a little hand."

Song Weiyang drew a spell in the air, and a gust of gentle wind wrapped itself around the bird.

"Squeeee!!! Squeeee!!!!"

The bird flapped its weak wings and tried to fly away, but it was drawn back into the little whirlwind.

"There, there, little friend, do not resist. I am not going to hurt you."

An empty cage was brought to the Qifeng Palace Master, who then tucked the bird safely inside for Zhang Fengxi to take home. Inside the cage, it kept crying out like a baby who was separated from its mother.

"Poor bird," Song Weiyang sighed. "It really likes the Crown Prince."

Zhang Fengxi pursed his lips. If he forcefully brought the bird back home now, it might throw a tantrum at Longjing Palace and maybe even try to run away. In that case, then he had no other choice.

"Xie Jianyu, can I inconvenience you with the bird for a while?" Zhang Fengxi asked the Crown Prince.

Xie Jianyu stared at the alpha in front him.

Turned out that Zhang Fengxi could bear to part with the special bird for a while after all.

"Sure."

Xie Jianyu took the cage from Zhang Fengxi’s hand. The bird was so happy that it started jumping up and down inside the cage. Having no more reason to stay any longer, Xie Jianyu returned to his palace with the bird in tow.

Curiously, Zhang Fengxi followed him back home.

"... What do you want?" Xie Jianyu asked once they both landed at the Fuxi Palace’s entrance gate.

Zhang Fengxi flashed Xie Jianyu his most diplomatic smile.

"Let me explain, Xie Jianyu. This bird is supposed to help me with Liu Wenyuan."

Zhang Fengxi realized he misspoke the moment Xie Jianyu’s eyes cast cold and sharp gaze in his direction. It was unclear whether the Crown Prince’s gaze was full with contempt or disgust. Or maybe a mixture of both.

"Take the bird to Liu Wenyuan, then," the Crown Prince snapped. He thrust the cage into Zhang Fengxi’s arms. "I am sure that it will give you plenty of help."

"Yes... I mean, NO! I need to test it first! Xie Jianyu!!!"

Xie Jianyu was not interested in listening to Zhang Fengxi. He marched right into his palace.

"Xie Jianyu, how can you bear to leave it alone?" Zhang Fengxi sighed as he chased after Xie Jianyu.

When he stroked the sturdy bars of the cage, he received not-so-loving pecks from his angry bird. Zhang Fengxi opened the cage and released the little feathered beast. It quickly fluttered out and chased after Xie Jianyu.

Its pitiful squeals successfully drew the Crown Prince’s attention.

Xie Jianyu grabbed the tiny bird from air and stroked it wordlessly. Grinning shamelessly from ear to ear, Zhang Fengxi followed him into the guest reception room.

A little bird it might be, but with the appetite of a horse. It already finished its second apple before it rolled to the side and let out a small burp in delight.

Xie Jianyu petted the bird on its back to promote its digestion.

"What kind of test do you want to carry out?"

"Quite simple, actually," Zhang Fengxi poked at the bird’s small stomach, and earned himself an angry peck on his finger. "This bird is supposed to be able to tell lies from the truths."

"Oh? Interesting."

"Yes, so I will just speak some lies and truths alternately and see how it will react."

"Hmm. Go ahead then."

Zhang Fengxi thought for a while, and then he came up with some lines.

"I am wearing a blue robe right now."

The bird burped. Zhang Fengxi was wearing a green robe at the moment.

"Okay. I like moldy bread."

The bird preened its feathers. Zhang Fengxi obviously disliked moldy bread.

"... I think the bird is broken."

Xie Jianyu shook his head.

"Maybe it does not respond when it knows that it is being tested. Those statements are too simple."

"Hmm."

Xie Jianyu continued stroking the bird’s back absent-mindedly. His hand stopped in the air when he heard what Zhang Fengxi said next.

"I love Xie Jianyu."
