Chapter 123: Chapter 123 : The Cursed Soil (2)

"Let me understand this correctly," Zhang Fengxi said as they walked away from the field a short moment later. "Do you plan to suggest to the Heavenly Emperor to conduct ghost weddings for all twenty-four female ghosts?"

"Of course not," Xie Jianyu answered. "We can handle these ghost weddings on our own."

"..."

Great, the Crown Prince was acting on his desperate urge to excel again.

"And where do you plan to get twenty-four dead bridegrooms to marry them?’

"It is supposed to be a symbolic marriage only. We can run the plan by the local Ghost Mistress Of Ceremony."

"Oh, good. And I thought that you planned to kill twenty-four young men to accompany the dead women in the afterlife."

Xie Jianyu sneered at Zhang Fengxi.

"Well, I have one with me here. Only twenty-three more bridegrooms to find."

"Oi, oi!"

The Ghost Mistresses of Ceremony were deities who resided in local temples. When they were still alive, they performed a lot of wedding ceremonies for the living. In death, due to their good karma, they ascended to godhood and were tasked to perform wedding ceremonies for the dead.

When Xie Jianyu took up communication with the local Ghost Mistress of Ceremony, Zhang Fengxi went back to Rainbell Town to talk to the townsfolk.

After Zhang Fengxi told the crowd that they needed to make twenty-four pairs of dolls for a mass wedding ceremony, the townsfolk exchanged confused and skeptical glances with each other.

"We need to appease the resentful souls of the twenty-four maidens who were sacrificed by the Crescent Mayhem Sect," Zhang Fengxi explained. "Right now, these souls inhabit the farmlands and prevent anything from growing. If we successfully restore the farmlands, we can improve the livelihood of many towns and villages, not only the Rainbell Town’s. Please, everyone, lend us your hands!"

And then, the middle-aged man who tried to rob Xie Jianyu spoke up. He was widely known as Old Man Gao from the back alley.

"Look, rich young man, we appreciate your help in reviving this town these past few days. You and your sullen-looking friend have motivated a lot of us to turn a new leaf.

It’s not that we don’t want to help.

Your story about twenty-four dead women simply does not make sense. Our Rainbell Town has never lost so many women in the past.

Where did this ridiculous story come from?"

Old Man Gao chuckled.

"Right?" he turned to look at the men and women in the crowd. "Don’t you all think so?"

Reluctantly, the townsfolk had to agree.

"That’s right," one of them said. "Young Master, I don’t know where this theory hailed from, but it sounds like one of the lies that fraudulent priests tell to extort money from the town."

"Yeah, if we have that much time on our hands, we should just rebuild the houses."

"Yeah, correct!"

Zhang Fengxi sighed in his heart. He could understand why gods preferred to create miracles than mobilize human beings. Convincing them was difficult enough!

"Everyone, please have some trust," Ah Yan’s mother suddenly spoke up. "I was one of the last farm workers who tried to revive the fields before the owner gave up. I should be more skeptical than all of you, but I believe that the two young masters can help!"

"That’s true!" Ah Yan cried out. "The young masters have nothing to gain from helping us. It’s just twenty-four pairs of dolls! Let’s just help them!"

A warm smile crept to Zhang Fengxi’s lips. Maybe he was too hasty with his conclusion.

"Oh, fine," Old Man Gao grunted. "Twenty-four pairs of dolls for the ghost wedding ceremony, right? We will make them for you!"

Zhang Fengxi turned to Ah Yan’s mother and beamed.

"Thank you for the help, Big Sister."

Ah Yan’s mother waved with her hands.

"No, no. I just did what I had to do. Besides... my son and I owe you too much. This is the least I can do."

And so, the Rainbell Town’s inhabitants agreed to work on the dolls.

Meanwhile, the three-day investigation period was quickly running out.

At night, the restaurant’s doors were closed. Zhang Fengxi’s tired employees were sleeping soundly, but Zhang Fengxi was still awake.

He lit up a lantern and sat alone on the front steps, gazing at the bright moon in the sky.

A small dot appeared on the moon.

It grew larger and larger until it took the form of a handsome young man riding on his heavenly steed.

Zhang Fengxi rose to his feet and lifted the lantern into his hand.

"You are still awake," Xie Jianyu remarked. "How did the talk go?"

"Success."

Zhang Fengxi grinned. "Have you finished making the report to the Heavenly Emperor?"

Xie Jianyu nodded.

"En. He agreed with the plan. It is good if we can fix the issue by appeasing the resentful souls."

Xie Jianyu patted the body of his heavenly steed.

"Go back," he said. "I will summon you again when I need you."

The horse neighed in assent. He rubbed against his owner affectionately before he spread his wings and returned to heaven.

"How many more?" Xie Jianyu asked while they walked into the restaurant.

Zhang Fengxi grinned.

"I am glad that you remember."

Xie Jianyu scoffed.

"You bother me every night with the questions. I have answered seven."

"Well, then..."

Zhang Fengxi took out his list and stared at the answers that he scribbled next to the questions.

Favorite food - Grilled fish.

Favorite drink - Early Dew Under The Moonlight.

Favorite colors - Red and golden.

What kind of omega do you like? - All kinds of omegas.

Do you prefer a gentle or a strong-willed wife? Strong-willed wife.

Do you like children? - Yes

Do you like boys or girls? - Boys

Only two more questions were left.

"What are your favorite pastime activities?"

"Meditating and practicing sword skills."

Heh. Zhang Fengxi snickered. He knew it.

"Last. Have you ever fallen in love before?"

A knot formed in Zhang Fengxi’s throat after he asked the question.

He felt all awkward.

He knew the answer to this question very well.

Zhang Fengxi raised his eyes and stared at Xie Jianyu.

"Well, have you?"

Xie Jianyu looked straight into Zhang Fengxi’s eyes and lied.

"I have not."
