Chapter 105: Chapter 105 : Rescuing Liu Wenyuan (2)
For as long as they lived, human beings sought to escape their humanity.
The righteous ones cultivated to the peak, hoping to ascend one day. Those who did not make it collected enough karma to be reborn into a higher realm.
The rotten ones chose the condemned path, mixing with the demons and obtaining a similarly eternal life, however cursed the existence might be.
Life was short and most people desired instant gratification. Besides, the Demonic Realm was a lot more accessible than the Heavenly Realm.
At night, the only place in Yi Village that was still bright with life was a bar at the center of the village.
Here, men of all kinds and origins gathered to exchange interesting information that was useless to some but useful to the rest.
As the sky grew darker and the number of stars that popped up in the sky increased, the customers started to disperse. Some went upstairs to spend the night in the few vacant rooms in the inn, some went home after a day’s hard work.
Close to midnight, there were only five people left in the bar.
The barkeeper eyed his four customers with a frown. There was a disheveled-looking man who was slumped against the counter, badly drunk.
There were three good friends at a table, regular customers who gathered every week to catch up about their lives.
At another table, there was a handsome young man who looked rather bored. He drank a lot tonight, but he did not look drunk at all.
The barkeeper searched the handsome young man’s figure with his eyes. He seemed to be quite wealthy. What was that on his back? A sword?
And then the other was...
A sudden groan was heard, coming from the disheveled customer at the counter.
The barkeeper pursed his lips in distaste.
"Hey, young man."
The barkeeper pushed at the man’s shoulder repeatedly. He knew him. This useless chap, Dong Wuhan, had been loitering around for a few nights now.
"Hrrmmmm... don’t push me... hic... I am so tired..." Dong Wuhan mumbled.
"If you are tired, you should go home!" the barkeeper became impatient. "Hey, do you even have money to pay for all the beer you just drank???"
"Leave me aloooone... Urgh..."
The barkeeper cursed when Dong Wuhan started to throw up.
"Don’t throw up here! Get out! Get out!!!"
Dong Wuhan raised his reddened eyes at the barkeeper.
"You," he mumbled. "You are going to regret this. When I become the Demon King’s right-hand man, you are going to... buarghhhhh..."
No one got to hear what Dong Wuhan wanted to say, because he was kicked out unceremoniously out of the bar right after.
The handsome young man, Zhang Fengxi in disguise, lowered his n-th cup of wine and left his table. He took out two silver coins and slid them across the counter.
"Oh! Thank you, young man. Please come again."
"Old man, who was that?" he asked.
"That was Dong Wuhan, a useless young man from the nearby Kun Village. He was kicked out of his house after gambling his parents’ entire fortune. Afterward, he left his village and wandered into Yi Village."
"Hmmm."
Zhang Fengxi soon excused himself. From a distance, he could hear Dong Wuhan talk to himself.
"I have... hic... done what they asked me to do, but... hic... why... I cannot even see the entrance."
The handsome young man’s lips curled up in a smile. Fast like lightning, he shoved Dong Wuhan to a tree and pinned his arms behind his back.
Dong Wuhan cried like a pig at a slaughterhouse.
"Aaaaarggffhhhh!!! I am poor! I am poor! I don’t have money!!!"
It was not his money that Zhang Fengxi needed. Not that Dong Wuhan had any to spare.
Zhang Fengxi rummaged inside Dong Wuhan’s pocket and found what he was looking for -- a piece of paper with a drawing of the Fourth Demon King’s Sigil. It was an entrance ticket to the Demonic Realm.
"Hey, give that back!!!"
Dong Wuhan jumped at Zhang Fengxi to take the ticket back from him. Zhang Fengxi easily avoided his pathetic attack and subdued him.
"I am saving you from a life of eternal damnation," Zhang Fengxi hissed at Dong Wuhan. He then gave the back of Dong Wuhan’s neck a chop. The drunk man dropped like a log of wood and lay unconscious on the ground.
Zhang Fengxi pressed two fingers against Dong Wuhan’s forehead.
"Go back to your family, kowtow for your parents’ forgiveness, and be a better son from here onwards."
Dong Wuhan opened his eyes. With a blank expression, he got to his feet and slowly walked away. Zhang Fengxi scoffed as he watched the man’s retreating back.
"Zhang Fengxi."
Upon hearing his name, Zhang Fengxi looked up and saw a hooded figure standing at the tip of a thin branch. The man’s dark cloak fluttered behind him, making him look like a gigantic bird.
Zhang Fengxi raised his hand and showed Xie Jianyu the entrance ticket that he got from Dong Wuhan.
"The Fourth Demon King. You?"
Xie Jianyu pulled out his entrance ticket from his sleeve.
"The Third Demon King."
"Come up here," Xie Jianyu said. Zhang Fengxi stepped off the ground and landed on the branch next to Xie Jianyu.
Some distance away, they could see unusual distortion in the air.
"Someone has summoned a portal," Xie Jianyu said. "Let’s go."
Zhang Fengxi nodded.
They jumped off the tree and slowly walked in the direction of the distorted space. When they sensed movements left and right, they quickly changed their appearances.
Xie Jianyu took on the appearance of a young woman whose ticket he took away, and Zhang Fengxi took the appearance of Dong Wuhan.
More and more human beings gathered, forming a stream that flowed toward the Crying Ghost Canyon.
All around them, the sounds of crying ghosts could be heard.
As Xie Jianyu and Zhang Fengxi moved ahead, they could hear a hundred voices singing the same haunting song.
"One, two, three, four,
Mortal life is but transient.
Lost souls coming hither,
Eternal life knows no repent."
Ahead of them, they could see two gigantic demon statues looming over the approaching human beings. A huge fiery portal extended between their massive figures, and the human beings slowly disappeared into the portal.
Zhang Fengxi took Xie Jianyu’s hand and squeezed it. Xie Jianyu turned to look at him a second before they went through the portal and lost the ground beneath their feet.
