Chapter 273: Chapter 52: Legend of the Dark Night (5K Votes for Monthly Ticket)_3
Xu Shu glanced at the open space outside.
Going out to fight? He wasn’t very willing, as he disliked being illuminated by the moonlight. Although he had been exposed to the moon the past couple of days on his way back without any issues, he still felt uneasy about it. It must’ve been psychological.
Xu Shu pondered for a moment and didn’t directly agree. Instead, he turned to say, "What was your original plan? It’s so close to the border, if it escapes, wouldn’t it be hard to chase?"
It’s a matter of life and death just to cross the border during the day, let alone at night.
"We can use a corpse to lure it closer, and then we’ll take care of it here," Matthew was prepared. "Also, I’ve injected anesthetic into it. If it eats that, we might have a chance to reduce its fighting ability."
As he spoke, he shook the burlap bag next to him, the bag somewhat reddened.
Just fight at this doorway?
That’s something to consider... Hmm?
Sniffing the faint scent of blood, Xu Shu asked, "What’s this?"
"A pig’s leg, but it’s been soaked in human blood. Heh, werewolves are picky eaters. They prefer human flesh over animal flesh," Matthew explained with a naive look.
"Where did you get so much blood?"
"Ran into some bad luck. They must’ve been attacked and killed by bandits. I buried them, so taking some of their blood as compensation isn’t too much, right?" Matthew’s face was naive. (Note 1)
"..." Xu Shu looked at him deeply.
This was the tragedy of the times.
There was little respect for the lives of one’s kind or for their corpses.
Even though Matthew had spent most of his life in the civilized era before the disaster, he had already been assimilated.
Heh, in my past life, I’d probably charge you with a crime of disrespecting a corpse...
But now, I can only say you’re quite lucky. I just hope you didn’t kill a Scavenger deliberately just to get some blood. That probably wouldn’t be necessary. If it was just a little blood you needed, a simple cut would have sufficed. No need for killing...
"So, how about it? With you joining us, it’s almost certain we’ll catch it. It won’t get away," Matthew pressed while the iron was hot.
"Okay." Xu Shu didn’t hesitate any longer and agreed to it.
After all, if it was just a lone werewolf, he wasn’t particularly afraid to confront it alone. It would either be a matter of killing it or letting it escape.
Matthew immediately beamed with joy, "Well then, I wish us a happy collaboration in advance. Allow me to reintroduce myself. My name is Matthew Bright, a First-order Rascal. The rest of these guys are Patrol Soldiers who have followed me before. Hehe, I’m a true native of Xia Country."
I can tell. Xia Country really is vast and abundant, a gathering of cultures. The Astronomy Association forcefully changed the world’s common language to the original official language of Xia Country. Look at his fluent Xia official language... Xu Shu nodded his head and briefly shook his hand, saying:
"Li Fengtian, Warrior."
It’s convenient to team up with Transcendents that don’t have a Promotion Drive. You can report any name you like.
Of course, the downside is that there are no specific constraints. The cooperation depends entirely on one’s sense of justice.
——
It was past eleven o’clock, the moon hung high, the cold wind bleak.
Everyone at the Lighthouse Inn had already retired early. The entire first-floor lobby had been dark for some time, utterly unlit, relying solely on the moonlight coming through.
A number of the inn’s staff were curiously squatting not far inside the door, stealthily peeking outside – it was so late, and Xu Shu and the others still didn’t want to go upstairs. They naturally couldn’t keep it from Brook and the others, but they didn’t dare to disturb them, only dared to watch from the sidelines.
Xu Shu and Matthew’s group were squatting outside the main door, each taking up some concealed corners, silently waiting.
"It’s about time, throw the corpse out."
Two old Patrol Soldiers, nicknamed Old Song and Old He, were carrying the burlap bag filled with chunks of meat.
On Matthew’s signal, they quickly scattered the bloody chunks not far from the inn’s side door, within the iron fence, and the smell of blood rapidly intensified.
The rest of the people worked together to open the iron fence, creating an interlocking formation, pulled to one side to make the place seem less dangerous.
Normally, with the iron fence in place, the werewolf would have to put quite some effort to climb in.
Now, it would be much more convenient.
"Brother Li Fengtian, I’ll be counting on you to restrain it first in a moment," Matthew whispered a greeting.
"No problem."
As a Warrior, this was certainly his duty. Xu Shu made a gesture to indicate that there was no problem.
After everyone had done all this, they quickly returned to the prearranged ambush site. The Patrol Soldiers were holding fairly advanced firearms, while Matthew had a chilling dagger strapped to his waist, which was obviously no ordinary item.
However, Xu Shu was empty-handed today, not even a steel bar in sight, but there was a pile of stones on the ground. With the aid of his mastery in ’Architecture,’ he had assembled a small castle-like structure, as if building with blocks.
The entire front of the Lighthouse Inn quickly became silent.
The Wasteland’s night was very tranquil, especially the closer you got to the border, the more deathly still it was.
The only sounds were the occasional howls of strange, unidentified monsters in the far distance and the suppressed moans and groans from a few of the rooms upstairs in the inn.
As time ticked by, midnight soon arrived.
A series of panting sounds suddenly began to emerge.
All ears were pricked.
At this moment, a robust creature, bear-like, wolf-like, and nearly three meters tall, burst in.
It was covered in black fur, drooling slime from its mouth, bearing little resemblance to a human anymore.
The Werewolf had arrived.
However, it did not enter on its own accord.
With all four limbs broken and twisted, its abdomen and back were lacerated, it entered the entrance of the inn.
"Bang~"
It fell heavily to the ground, in the midst of the foul, bloodied flesh, its long tongue hanging out, clearly having sustained serious injuries.
In the air, ’whoosh!’ ’Whoosh!’ the wind flapped.
Amidst several teeth-gritting, piercing screams.
Six humanoid monsters swiftly swooped down one after the other, standing in different parts of the clearing, encircling the Werewolf.
Their eyes glowed red, and a pair of bat wings on their backs slowly retracted!
On the ground, the Werewolf howled in rage and despair.
The six humanoid monsters circled it, occasionally licking the corners of their mouths. Under the moonlight, their features were laid bare.
Their skin was pale, and they wore apparently human black suits that were tight-fitting. Their ears were pointed, much like those of the legendary elves.
Due to the ill-fitting clothes, one could discern three males and three females just by their shapes.
Especially the females, whose gender characteristics were clearly outlined—their figures were slender, but their chests were full, like ripe fruit hanging on thin branches, with their legs tightly together, leaving little space.
Blood Clan!
These were six of the infamous "vampires" among the myriad of mutant creatures!
They still hadn’t seemed to notice the abnormalities around them, so they were just circling the Werewolf.
"..." Matthew.
"..." Brook.
"..." The Patrol Soldiers and the other onlookers inside the building.
For a moment, everyone held their breath.
Xu Shu silently cast his gaze towards Matthew across the way.
Didn’t you fucking say you were sure only one Werewolf would come?
These six vampires don’t count as monsters, do they?
