Chapter 24: The Life of an adult

After walking for a while, they both got into the back of the taxi. For a while, neither of them spoke a single word; it was just the city noise and the tires on the road. Leo stared out the taxi window...

"Leo, I’m not going to follow you back, because I have something else to do," Uncle Tanaka finally explained, breaking the silence.

Leo exhaled, responding while looking out the window. "Uncle, sure, no pressure, I also have something to do." His mind wasn’t fully in the conversation...

His uncle nodded in acceptance. "Good. But make sure you constantly check your email, they might send you a letter of acceptance..."

Leo smirked, a hopeful look on his face. "Okay, I will."

"Honestly, I like this city." Uncle Tanaka leaned back, trying to extend their conversation... "Maybe next time I come and visit, we can go and do something fun."

Leo watched the buildings blur past his vision. "Sure, no pressure."

"Leo, I know you are nervous and bothered about that job, but don’t let it get to you, okay? Just leave it all to the universe." He playfully punched Leo’s shoulder...

Leo smiled faintly. "You always make it sound simple."

"It is simple," Tanaka replied him. "Just not easy."

Leo chuckled, nodding his head, still looking out the window. "Fair."

Then his phone buzzed...

[A notification popped up]

Sarah: Babe, how did it go? The job interview?

Leo stared at his phone screen for a second. The noise of the street faded as he sat still in the taxi, his thumbs hovering over his screen. Then he typed...

Leo: I don’t know if I got it... But I did my best. And to be honest, I’m somewhat calm about that.

A second later, her reply popped up:

Sarah: Babe, I’m proud of you, okay? Don’t let it get to you.

He smiled faintly, squinting his eyes. Just a little. Then responded:

Leo: Okay, babe.

Another ping...

Sarah: We’ll talk about it when I get back...

That made him pause. His eyes widened in excitement. His fingers moved fast while typing:

Leo: Babe, are you coming back today?

He waited, watching the "typing..." bubble appear, then disappear, then reappear again. The bubble blinked again...

Then finally she texted back, which made Leo almost stand up from his seat...

Sarah: Babe, I’m not sure yet... the shoot might run late. But I want to. I really miss you so much.

Leo stared at that last line of their message.

He read it again.

"I really miss you so much."

A wave of warm emotions rushed through him. He leaned his head against his seat cushion, shielding his screen from the sunlight as he typed:

Leo: I miss you, too. A lot. Things feel off when you’re not around...

Sarah: Babe, we’ll fix that soon, okay? Just a little more time... (Cat Sticker)

Leo: Yeah... I know.

Leo sighed heavily, sinking into his taxi seat as the cushions absorbed his weight. He leaned his head backward, his eyes closed for a second, just breathing slowly...

Then, a light tap on his shoulder.

"Girl issues, hmm," Uncle Tanaka teased him with a loud laugh, giving Leo’s shoulder a playful smack. "Don’t let it eat you up. You did well today."

Before Leo could respond, his uncle suddenly shouted to the driver, "Ohio, stop here!"

The taxi rolled to a slow stop near a subway station. Uncle Tanaka stepped out casually, stretched a little, and leaned in through the open taxi window...

"You’ll be fine," he said with a grin on his face, giving Leo a final thumbs-up. "Text me when you hear a call back, yeah?"

Leo nodded as the taxi engine started running again. "Thanks, Uncle."

The door shut, and the taxi drove away. Leo watched from the window behind as his uncle’s figure slowly disappeared, swallowed by the bustling streets and distance...

A quiet smile formed at his lips...

After a while, the taxi slowed to a stop in front of Leo’s apartment complex. He reached for his wallet, ready to pay, but the driver turned towards him and smiled...

"No need," he responded. "Your uncle has already paid for both of you."

Leo froze for a moment, his wallet still in his hand. That small gesture, so simple, yet left a bittersweet feeling in his chest. He appreciated it, truly. But deep down, a part of him felt like he should’ve been the one to have paid. Like it was his responsibility now.

"Thanks," he muttered softly, stepping out of the car, before closing the doors...

The sun was warmer now, and his street was quieter. Leo stared up at his apartment complex, then sighed and began to slowly climb the staircase, each step at a time.

His mind wandered between the interview, Sarah, and the odd way life kept reminding him he wasn’t fully standing on his own yet...

When he finally reached his door, he pulled out his keys, fiddled with the lock, and pushed his door open. The familiar smell welcomed him back. As he stepped inside...

The apartment was quiet, still, like nothing really had changed.

Leo dropped his phone beside his bed’s pillows and kicked off his shoes. His body moved on autopilot, the weight of the day still hanging on his shoulders. One by one, he began to undress himself, loosening his shirt, slipping out of his trousers, tossing them aside without any care...

The silence of the apartment only made it louder...

He walked into the bathroom, turned on the shower, and waited for the steam to rise. As the water heated up, he stepped in and let it run down his back, his face, and his chest, washing off his nerves, sweat, the pressure, and maybe even a bit of his self-doubts...

He closed his eyes for a while in the shower.

After a few minutes under the warm water, Leo finally stepped out. He quickly dried himself off with a towel, then threw on a t-shirt and shorts, and walked barefoot into the kitchen...

He opened the cabinet and grabbed a box of cereal, then reached into the fridge for a bottle of milk. He was too tired to care about anything else.

He poured both into a plastic bowl, the same plastic plate he always used when he didn’t feel like washing dishes later.

He then sat at the counter in silence, scooping the cereal into his mouth, staring at the wall...

After eating his cereal, he put his plastic plate inside his sink and slowly walked over to the bed and landed face-first in the pillows. In a matter of seconds, Leo had already fallen asleep...

[3:00 PM...]

[4:30 PM...]

[6:30 PM...]

A lot of time had passed since Leo had fallen asleep.

(Ring Ring...)

Someone was at the door. The doorbell rang for a couple of minutes before it managed to wake Leo up from his deep sleep.

He slowly stood up, scratching his left eye, stretching. Then he slowly and reluctantly started walking towards his door.

"I am coming..." Leo murmured while walking towards the door, half asleep. Then he got there, and he leaned closer to the door’s security hole to see who was outside.

Then his eyes widened...
