Chapter 97: Chapter 71: Showdown Between Beast Tamers (Part 2)
Aisha "heard" Yezi’s words and realized that communication between humans isn’t always limited to just language.
"Young man, would you like to be my pet? I had an African leopard that died last year, and you really resemble it," Aisha inspected Yezi with interest without feeling offended by his words, from his healthy copper-red skin to his tightly pursed lips and his eyes that seemed to spit out fire with anger.
Raising humans seemed more interesting than raising animals. Her mother had always been dissatisfied with her ability to control animals. To prove herself, she wanted to apply her beast taming skills on a human. If used properly, her mother would surely look at her with new respect.
Aisha of the Roster Family was already imagining fastening a "cheetah" boy with a golden chain. His defiant look and indomitable temperament were exactly what Aisha liked.
"Crazy woman," Yezi saw the desire in Aisha’s disgusting blue eyes, which made him feel uncomfortable all over.
Xiao Xian racked her brains, grabbing a few words from her limited vocabulary, "you, fat pig." As a pure and good-natured girl, Xiao Xian’s English learning process was different from most of us, certainly not starting from "dirty" words. Can you imagine Mr. Zhu seriously teaching his granddaughter dirty words like "bitch, asshole"? After nearly a year of listening to proper English broadcasts, she came up with a few "dirty" word combinations.
A spark burst into the air, Aisha’s beautiful eyes suddenly widened. She had always disliked the same sex, especially dirty, aesthetically challenged Asian wild girl.
The uninjured rainbow pheasant in Aisha’s arms suddenly took flight, its sharp claws aiming for Xiao Xian’s face.
As fast as it was, there was something faster. Yezi, swift as a nimble eagle, blocked the pheasant’s attack at sub-light speed.
The sky darkened, though the day was very clear with no clouds in the sky. Darkening the street were nearly a hundred birds, with ruffled-eagle feathers, melodious-oriole singing, and a variety of birds with thin legs and white plumage—cranes—all flapping and chirping nonstop at Aisha, who was dressed brightly but rotten on the inside, as well as the translator.
Residents of Bai Family Ancient Town had never seen so many birds at once. The varied high and low bird calls sounded like crying blood, making one’s scalp tingle.
Two "bangs" echoed in her head as if strings had snapped. The Beast Taming Technique forcibly linked with the pheasant was broken. With Aisha’s current level, she couldn’t control so many birds at once. She lost. It wasn’t because the boy was supernatural, but because she lost the advantage of people and location.
"Let’s go," Aisha saw her cover blown and before more people gathered, she sharply ordered and hurriedly got into the car with the translator.
When Yezi and Xiao Xian returned to the mountain, Dongnan Miao Village and Ge Village were exceptionally quiet, without the banging of drums for a search or the anxious peering around. Xiao Xian went home first, hearing from neighbors that grandpa had gone to Miao Village in the afternoon and hadn’t returned yet. Thinking he might be at the Li Family’s, she followed Yezi to Miao Village.
In the suspension house of the Li Family, Grandpa Zhu and Li Quqi were playing chess, while Yezi’s mother stood at the stairway, her eyes betraying neither joy nor anger.
On the way home, the two kids were thinking of excuses to avoid a scolding. After unanimous agreement, they came up with a unified story: they encountered a human trafficker on the way to school today.
"Oh," Yezi’s mother asked with interest, "Did the trafficker kidnap both of you?"
"He kidnapped Xiao Xian because she’s young and easier to snatch," Yezi pointed his finger at Xiao Xian.
"He kidnapped Yezi because he’s a boy and worth more," Xiao Xian’s elbow pointed accurately towards Yezi.
"You two stop fighting like dogs. Little Hai went to the temple and told everything, and Master Shan Yin came by earlier in the afternoon. Yezi, you’re older and a brother, so tell us what happened. If your story isn’t good or clear, you’ll spend the next few days working the bellows in the forge," Yezi tried to read his father’s expression to no avail, while Zhu Shijun just nodded in agreement.
Knowing the children hadn’t eaten yet, Yezi’s mother let them have their meal first. The stove in the Li Family’s kitchen still had glowing charcoal. Wrapped in banana leaves, four or five bamboo tubes containing the aroma of pig’s head and rice were barely containable, tempting the children to disregard the heat and spill the contents out.
The green bamboo tubes had turned to a straw yellow color. Xiao Xian had never eaten bamboo tube rice before. In her haste, she accidentally burned her hand while removing the banana leaves. Yezi laughed at her clumsiness while handing over the peeled bamboo tube, chattering, "If I were a trafficker, I wouldn’t kidnap someone as clumsy as you."
"Who are you calling clumsy? If it wasn’t for your dawdling insistence on delivering those rainbow pheasants to the town’s animal rescue station, would we have returned so late?" Even as Xiao Xian complained, her hand didn’t stop reaching for the bamboo tube.
Yezi chuckled, peeled off the banana leaves, swallowed a mouthful of rice, chewed it a few times, then shouted to Mama, "Mama, where did this new rice come from? It’s delicious." To say Yezi was slow would be an injustice; his senses were much sharper than the average person, discerning new from old rice and detecting overnight fish just with a sniff and a taste.
"It’s new rice Grandpa Zhu brought over, said it was grown by Xiao Xian. She’s really accomplished, only seven years old and knows how to farm, and even grew such good rice. It’s much better than the Miao family’s fragrant rice," Yezi’s mother warmed two bowls of mountain mushroom soup for the children. That afternoon, after Master Shan Yin mentioned the children’s disappearance and Little Hai recounted Xiao Xian’s morning encounter, the families went to the village entrance to inquire. Indeed, the two kids were seen loitering there earlier, then disappeared.
The Li couple didn’t react much; which Miao child hasn’t gotten lost at least once? Their composure quickly influenced Zhu Shijun. Considering the worst possibility, Grandpa figured that his granddaughter was probably lured away by Yezi, but the temple can’t run far from the monk. (To be continued.
