Chapter 91: Chapter 71: The Untamed Hunter
It’s undeniable that Aisha is a very beautiful woman. Although Xiao Xian thought her hair was a bit too blond and she walked as if on stilts, revealing too much of her snowy chest in her low-cut dress, from the expressions of the onlooking pedestrians, Xiao Xian could still make out one word: "Stunning."
Glancing at Yezi, his face was blank, but his gaze differed from the others around him. He wasn’t staring at Aisha’s face or chest, but at the two birds in her arms.
Xiao Xian recognized the particularly beautiful metal vehicle as belonging to Aisha and the skunk, their cohort. Why hadn’t that impressively grand vehicle broken down? She had added enough iron nails beneath the tires, but Xiao Xian didn’t know why it still ran so steadily on the road. He was unaware that the quality of imported cars, especially the newly launched off-road Jeep Cherokee, was good and reinforced tires couldn’t easily be damaged by common nails or rocks.
"Kid, you’re stunned, aren’t you? Our Miss Aisha is so beautiful that even birds would deliver themselves to her," the interpreter scorned the two shabbily dressed children in front of him, clearly kids from the countryside. Truly a godforsaken place—bugs galore and the people long and lean like grasshoppers, without any manners, rudely staring at a foreign guest.
Several police cars drove away, and the interpreter breathed a sigh of relief. That had been a really close call. Guided by Skunk’s directions, he drove Miss Aisha to the small forest where, as expected, the escaped birds had taken refuge.
Just as Skunk and his team began unloading the bird-catching equipment from the car, two or three police cars arrived with sirens blaring, catching them red-handed. The interpreter was at a loss, stuttering in his traitorous English. In China, smuggling protected animals, whether alive or dead, in quantities beyond a few constitutes a serious crime. Miss Aisha, being an American with a significant family background, could enjoy judicial privileges under the Sino-American agreement. After striving for five or six years, he’d just barely obtained an American green card, but still held Chinese citizenship, meaning he’d face prison if he broke the law domestically.
"Stay calm, just say what I taught you," Aisha said to the interpreter when she saw the police officers with their wide-brimmed hats, showing no panic on her face but staying very composed.
"This lady is Miss Aisha from America’s Roster family; she represents the U.S. Animal Protection Association and is in China to work on the conservation of endangered animals. In Guiyang, we learned about a group of criminals specializing in smuggling animal specimens. Miss Aisha, disregarding her personal safety, drove to track them down to this place, intending to rescue these birds. We were about to call the police when you arrived." The interpreter, after smoothly rehearing Aisha’s narrative, put on his returnee’s façade.
While speaking, he didn’t forget to give Skunk a warning look that meant "be smart and stay silent."
After hearing the explanation and taking in Aisha’s impressive appearance, the police station’s officers believed most of it.
"Come here," Aisha raised her hand. Her agate-like eyes pierced through the foliage of the woods, focusing intently on the place where two Rainbow pheasants were perched.
The leaves in the woods were blown aside by the wind as if an invisible hand materialized in mid-air. The two Rainbow pheasants shivering among the leaves fluttered their wings and flew down, pecking affectionately at Aisha’s fingers. "These two Rainbow pheasants are injured; we need to take them back for treatment."
After this scene, the last bit of doubt in the police officers vanished. They escorted Skunk and his team into the cars, then reminded Aisha politely that, should anything similar happen in the future, she just needed to call the police.
Xiao Xian and the others didn’t know what had happened, but the presence of the two Rainbow pheasants in Aisha’s arms was quite evident to Yezi. He recognized the robust off-road vehicle, and he didn’t have much fondness for foreigners, but he absolutely loathed those who dealt in wildlife so callously.
"Release them," Yezi’s face turned red—not from shyness but from anger. The birds were trembling; he could feel their emotional turmoil. "Can’t you understand human speech? I’m telling you to put them down, stop tormenting the birds."
The surrounding air seemed to twist like a screw, invisible to the eye, but Xiao Xian could feel a potent force enveloping his entire body.
Upon hearing the raised voice, the interpreter wanted to charge forward, scold the country boy, and even slap him twice, arrogantly questioning whether his eyes were on the soles of his feet. But he couldn’t speak; his tongue had turned to stone, heavy and immovable in his mouth.
Aisha "heard" Yezi’s words. Sometimes, the communication between humans goes beyond language.
"Young man, would you like to be my pet? My African Leopard died last year, and you look so much like it," Aisha wasn’t offended by Yezi’s words; instead, she observed him with interest, from his healthy copper-red skin to his tightened lips and the fury in his eyes, ready to burst into flames.
Raising humans is much more interesting than raising animals. Her ability to control animals has always been dissatisfactory to her mother. To prove her abilities, she actually wanted to apply her beast taming skills on humans. If used properly, her mother would surely start to see her in a new light.
The Roster family’s Aisha was already fantasizing about tying down the "cheetah" boy with a golden chain. His defiant gaze and indomitable aura were what Aisha liked the most.
"Crazy woman," Yezi could see the desire in Aisha’s disgusting blue eyes, which made him feel deeply uncomfortable.
Xiao Xian by the side was frantically working her brain, finally catching a few words in her limited vocabulary, "you, fat pig." The pure-natured Xiao Xian didn’t learn English like most of us, starting with "dirty" words. Could you imagine Mr. Zhu solemnly teaching his granddaughter vulgar words like "bitch, asshole"? After listening to proper English broadcasts for nearly a year, she strained her brain and came up with a few "dirty" word combinations.
A spark flashed in the air, and Aisha’s beautiful eyes suddenly widened. She has always despised people of the same sex, especially when they are dirty and lack any sense of beauty, let alone a wild yellow-skinned girl.
The uninjured rainbow pheasant in Aisha’s arms soared up suddenly, its sharp claws reaching for Xiao Xian’s face.
If you call that fast, there’s something faster, as agile as a hawk, Yezi blocked the pheasant’s attack at sub-light speed.
The sky darkened, although it was a clear day without clouds. The darkening of the skies above the street was caused by nearly a hundred birds; the fluffed-up eagles, the melodious orioles, the slender-legged white cranes, and all sorts of birds in great unison, clamoring non-stop towards the outwardly glamorous but inwardly rotting Aisha and the interpreter.
The residents of Bai Family Ancient Town had never seen so many birds at once. The high and low undulating cries of the birds, sorrowful as if weeping blood, made people’s scalps tingle.
"Bang bang" went her brain, as if snapping a mental string, the Beast Taming Technique that was forcibly linked with the pheasant was broken. With Aisha’s current level of skill, she could not control so many birds at once. She was defeated not because the little boy was so miraculous, but because she lost the advantage of both human and geographical conditions.
"Let’s go," Aisha saw her deception uncovered, and while there weren’t many people around yet, she shouted and hurried into the car with the interpreter.
By the time Yezi and Xiao Xian returned to the mountains, Dongnan Miao Village and Ge Village were oddly quiet, without the sound of drums searching, nor any restless looking around. Xiao Xian went home first, where her neighbor told her that her grandfather had gone to Miao Village in the afternoon and hadn’t returned; she figured he might be at the Li Family’s place, so she followed Yezi there.
Inside the suspension house of the Li Family, Mr. Zhu and Li Quqi were playing chess, while Yezi’s mother stood at the stairway entrance, her expression indecipherable with joy or anger.
On their way back, both kids were thinking about excuses to avoid being scolded. After consulting each other, they unanimously decided to stick to one story: they encountered a human trafficker on their way to school today.
"Oh," Yezi’s mother asked with interest, "did the human trafficker kidnap both of you?"
"He kidnapped Xiao Xian. She is younger and easier to take away," Yezi’s fingertips pointed towards Xiao Xian.
"It was Yezi, he is a boy and worth more money," Xiao Xian’s elbow accurately turned towards Yezi.
"You two stop biting each other like dogs. Little Hai went to the temple and told everything; Master Shanyin came by before noon. Yezi, you’re older and a big brother, so tell us what happened. If you don’t speak clearly, you’ll be working in the forge blowing the bellows for the next few days," Yezi looked at his father and couldn’t tell much from his expression, while Zhu Shijun was just nodding in agreement.
Knowing the children hadn’t eaten yet, Yezi’s mother told them to go have their meal first. The red-hot charcoals in the stove of the Li Family’s house hadn’t died out, and the scent of pork head and rice faintly drifted from the bamboo tubes wrapped in banana leaves, tempting the kids who couldn’t wait despite the heat, turning the tubes out.
The green bamboo tubes were already roasted a yellowish-brown. Xiao Xian hadn’t eaten bamboo tube rice before, and in her eagerness, she burned her hand when lifting the banana leaves. Yezi laughed at her clumsiness and handed over the opened tube rice, muttering, "If I were a human trafficker, I wouldn’t kidnap someone like you; you’re too clumsy." (To be continued.
