Chapter 49 - 48: Little Turkey
Chapter 49: Chapter 48: Little Turkey
"How did you two get along so well?" Xiao Xian shook her hand, and Zhu Shijun, seeing Li Ye, let go of his hand. Adult matters are really not for children to meddle in.
"What are you saying? What do you mean ’get along well’?" Li Ye was displeased when she heard this. If there was anyone to get along with, it should be with a person, not a dog. Thinking of getting along with people, Yezi’s face suspiciously turned red, and she didn’t know where to avert her gaze.
"I’m talking about them. What are you butting in for?" Xiao Xian’s eyes curved into crescents, as she walked up to Dahuang and cheerfully watched the dog she hadn’t seen for several days. Dahuang was quite smart; after running away to Black Mountain, he didn’t get lost in the mountains and didn’t enter anyone’s home. Instead, with his tail between his legs, he wandered around downstairs at Li Ye’s home.
Yezi’s mother didn’t drive the stray dog away when she saw it. Instead, she allowed Yezi to feed it a bone and kept it at home.
Dahuang had gained weight, and even his dried yellow and sallow dog skin was now shiny and lustrous. More amusingly, there was "Little Pig", the same one that Yezi had carried out of the pigeon cage a few months ago, standing on its back, right?
There is a saying "treat a person with increased respect after three days of absence", but it didn’t apply to "Little Pig". The once raggedy and damp-feathered pigeon still had its tiny, punch-sized body, except now it was covered in a short, fluffy down that had dried. The feathers stuck closely to its body, a wine-red hue, and its two mung bean-sized eyes looked very lively, making it quite endearing to look at.
People often say, "there’s chaos when chickens fly and dogs leap," but when Dahuang first saw "Little Pig", he was filled with vigor, leaping and bounding around. Little did Dahuang know, "Little Pig" was no vegetarian; it grabbed onto tufts of hair on Dahuang’s neck with its claws and pecked so fiercely that Dahuang loudly begged for mercy.
Dahuang learned his lesson, and from then on, wherever "Little Pig" wanted to be, Dahuang had to stay standing and carry him around.
"You shouldn’t underestimate it, my uncle said this pigeon is not an ordinary one," "Little Pig" also had its moments of pride. Yezi had only taken it for two days when it perked up and could even make noise. One day, Yibar accidentally saw it and was told it hatched from his own pigeon cage. Yibar was shocked and exclaimed how lucky he was. It was fortunate that Yezi had brought it out, otherwise, if he had accidentally sold the pigeon one day, the red-feathered bird would have terrified the buyer. Yibar wasn’t reassured until he checked every pigeon cage like scanning for landmines. All the other pigeons were normal except for "Little Pig". He didn’t stop there and went out to the village to ask a few poultry farmers before returning to Miao Village with peace of mind.
"If it’s not a pigeon, then what is it?" Xiao Xian didn’t believe it. If it hatched from a pigeon cage, what could it be if not a pigeon?
"It’s a turkey," Yezi proudly declared, flaunting a term she’s never heard before. Uncle Yibar had said that turkeys are a foreign thing, found only overseas. Not long ago, when she took "Little Pig" out, the village boys made fun of her, but once they heard it was a turkey from overseas, their attitudes immediately changed, looking at her with admiration.
Uncle Yibar had mentioned that the pigeon cages had fewer eggs this year, so he brought in some from outside. That turkey egg must have gotten mixed in at that time.
Unfortunately, Yezi was only paying attention to people’s reactions and didn’t notice that "Little Pig" bristled its feathers just like a fighting rooster when it heard the word "turkey". "Little Pig" angrily flapped its wings and chirped continuously, "It’s not a turkey." It hated Yibar with a passion, that pig-headed fellow.
"Whether it’s a turkey or a water-chicken, it’s definitely not a pigeon," Xiao Xian scratched Little Pig with her finger as she spoke. Little Pig recognized her scent and let her do so. "Yezi, let me ask you, do you know where the Great Wizard in your village lives?"
"Why are you asking about Granny Hong’s place? She doesn’t see guests easily," said Yezi. The Miao Village’s Great Wizard was an old woman whose age couldn’t be guessed. As far back as Li Ye could remember, the Great Wizard had always looked the same: white-haired with wrinkles deep as carvings, hunched back, always carrying a heavy walking stick. When she walked, the stick would hit the ground, making a deep metallic sound. Miao Village wasn’t like the Han Clan; there was no concept of modern medicine. For minor illnesses, they relied on their body’s resistance; for serious ones, they sought the Great Wizard to pray and take herbal medicine. For hundreds of years, the Miao people have lived like this. Therefore, the lineage of the Great Wizard holds a high status in the Miao family, no less important than the village chief. Since Yezi’s mother was a disciple of the Great Wizard, Yezi also had a close relationship with her and didn’t fear her like the other Miao people did.
"There are two people in our village who have been poisoned. It’s getting late and the path down the mountain is difficult to traverse. The village chief said the Great Wizard here can cure them, but your uncle won’t let outsiders into the village," said Xiao Xian. Seeing that Dahuang was safe and sound and with a good family, her anger towards Wang Chunhua had subsided. But now she couldn’t help them herself and could only rely on the Great Wizard of the Miao family.
"That’s not possible, the Great Wizard has been unwell since the beginning of the year, and she vomited black blood during a recent illness at night. My Mama said she can no longer treat people. Not just the Han people, but even Miao people from our village have to be sent to another Miao Village for treatment," Yezi explained, feeling downhearted as he saw the disappointment on Xiao Xian’s face.
"How about this, bring them to my home for my Mama to have a look? My father has returned, and he really likes the Han people. Maybe he’ll make an exception and let Mama use the methods taught by the Great Wizard to treat them." Yezi had seen his Mama secretly cure sick animals a few times, all without his father knowing.
"Then you lead me to Aunt Li first, I need to tell her the cause of the illness," said Xiao Xian, grabbing Yezi’s hand. A girl’s hand felt different from a boy’s, and when Xiao Xian held his hand, his heart involuntarily began to race, and without realizing it, he clasped her hand in return.
The two kids dashed out of sight in a flash. Yibar, who was blocking the entrance to the village, was feeling smug not too long ago, but soon after, Yezi’s mother appeared.
"Yibar, let the people from Ge Village carry the sick to our house quickly. If anything happens to them, our ancestors in heaven would not forgive you first," scolded Yezi’s mother, disgruntled at her useless little brother. She just couldn’t help herself from being amused when she heard what Xiao Xian had to say back at home. The girl seemed so well-behaved, but she was cunningly clever. Her son was certainly not as smart as her; Yezi didn’t even realize that his own Mama had looked down on him. He was staring at his hand, regretting not walking slower on the way since Xiao Xian had let go the moment they reached his house.
"Elder sister, you’re going to save people? I thought you only knew how to cure animals, when did you learn to treat humans?" Unfortunately, no one was paying attention to Yibar at the moment. The villagers from Ge Village were already carrying the sick into the Miao Village while others were gathering around for the excitement. Left by Yibar’s side were only Dahuang and Little Pig.
"I’m speaking seriously, why doesn’t anyone believe me, this world... Ouch, little turkey, why are you pecking me?" Yibar yelped as he was suddenly pecked and a bump quickly formed on his hand.
Little Pig was infuriated, with nearly visible flames in his eyes, "Call me turkey again and you’ll see, I am the Illusion Phoenix."
