Chapter 145: Chapter 87: New Spatial Superpower 2
Blue Sky Apartment’s overall construction was complete, and the apartments were wired up. The only thing missing was the completion of the streetlights outside, and with no residents moved in yet, the area looked pitch-black. Today was the first day of the lunar month and even the moon was nowhere to be seen. When Qian Yongcai moved the flowerpots, he had to rely on the dim light from the security room by the entrance.
Fortunately, Qian Yongcai didn’t believe in ghosts or spirits; what stood before him, sparked by the almost burnt-out match, was not something scary but a girl around thirteen or fourteen years of age. Her skin was pale and translucent, her eyes large, and her limbs delicate, with a hint of a smile lingering at the corners of her mouth. Just by looking at Qian Yongcai’s concubine, one could tell this old man had a thing for younger flesh. Now, upon seeing a strikingly beautiful girl like Xiao Xian, he couldn’t help but drool all over the floor.
"Little girl, it’s so dark tonight, what are you wandering around the complex for? It would be bad if you bumped into some bad folks," Qian Yongcai’s thieving eyes stuck to Xiao Xian’s long, beautiful legs like flies. His lecherous gaze was bad enough, but he also tried to puff out his chest and suck in his belly to feign a good Samaritan appearance. Xiao Xian knew his true character and felt even more disgusted looking at him.
After arriving at Blue Sky Apartment, she inquired with the security, who said Qian Yongcai was not inside. When she asked where he had gone, the guard wouldn’t say. Xiao Xian, momentarily unsure of what to do, was reluctant to give up on finding someone, so she loitered around the complex. Around dinner time, she heard some greenery workers under Qian Yongcai complaining about his tyrannical behavior as they went out for a meal. He would dine and drink daily at small restaurants, cuddling with his mistress, yet he withheld the workers’ pay. It was almost as if he wanted them to go drink the Northwest wind. One of them also mentioned the Wealth Trees in the complex that had died, but no one knew what trick Qian Yongcai had in mind to conceal it.
Xiao Xian searched around in several small restaurants nearby, and indeed found him. The conversation between Qian Yongcai and his mistress was overheard by her without missing a word. This made Xiao Xian even more furious—this man, Qian Yongcai, was not just wicked at heart but was also trying to frame her grandfather. Originally she only intended to play a nasty trick on him, but now she had a change of heart. If she didn’t make Qian Yongcai so disoriented that he couldn’t tell the directions tonight, she wouldn’t be Zhu Xiaoxian.
While Qian Yongcai was busy bribing the security guard, Xiao Xian found a quiet corner to climb over the wall and enter the complex, locating those Wealth Trees. Upon finding them, she discovered that, aside from being able to read plant data, she had developed another ability.
"Uncle, I came with my sister. She’s a real estate salesperson, over in Building B. I don’t understand the adults’ conversation, and it’s boring staying inside, so I ran out," Xiao Xian pointed to the second building behind her, where the lights were on at the eleventh floor.
A salesperson for Blue Sky Apartment? Qian Yongcai looked at Xiao Xian, thinking that her sister must also be beautiful. Ordinarily, those sales ladies are pretty, and each one is backed by wealthy patrons. But Qian Yongcai was the kind of man who shouldn’t tangle with them.
He shouldn’t mess with the older ones, but perhaps the younger ones are okay. Qian Yongcai leered with a sly smile, "You must be bored alone inside; how about uncle buys you a Coke?"
"Uncle," Xiao Xian ignored the wolfish gleam in his eyes. He really was a dimwitted oaf. "What are you doing with these pots of red-buds?"
"Little lady, these are called Wealth Trees, imported from abroad and very expensive. They haven’t been watered and have withered. Thinking they look ugly sat downstairs, I decided to move them out," said Qian Yongcai as he inched a few steps closer to Xiao Xian.
Xiao Xian frowned ever so slightly but still kept a charming smile on her face: "Uncle, why dispose of just these few? The dozens of other red-bud plants have also gone bad. You moving them in and out alone might wear you out."
"Just these few have died; the others are all fine—look, even the leaves are still green. Don’t believe me? Feel them," Qian Yongcai pretended to reach for Xiao Xian’s hand, but she subtly avoided him.
"You’re wrong, uncle. You don’t understand plants. My family back in the village grows flowers. This is called red-bud. It has feather-shaped leaves, flowers that resemble pea flowers, and belongs to the legume family. What you’re about to throw away are just a few short plants. If you raised them for a few years, they could grow up to ten meters or more," Xiao Xian spoke fluently, with conviction, compelling Qian Yongcai to take her words seriously, startling him into sobriety.
These small things can grow that tall and bloom? No wonder the Taiwanese said this plant was valuable. Now he was in trouble, the more he thought, the more frightened he became. There were over fifty pots of Wealth Tree—or red-buds, with thirteen dead. He had planned to find some trees back in the village and replace them haphazardly to muddle through, but if these bloomed and grew taller, wouldn’t that reveal everything? And what if the remaining ones caught the disease, then how would he cope?
"Uncle, what’s the matter? You look so pale. It’s such a pity these trees have rot at the root, it must have gotten contaminated while they were still saplings," Xiao Xian picked one of the red-bud plants from the pots not yet removed, found a rock, and revealed its roots, then asked Qian Yongcai to strike another match. On examination, the base of the stem was covered in brown spots.
"Diseases like root rot are contagious. If one plant is infected, the others can’t escape," Qian Yongcai felt his legs weaken, unable to muster any strength.
This girl spoke with authority, and now he was filled with doubt. Qian Yongcai hurried over to another few pots of Wealth Trees, frantically lifting them out of the pots to inspect the stems. Sure enough, the stems were sunken in, with signs of disease just visible.
"This is the end, all is lost—I’m going to lose even the funeral expenses," Qian Yongcai lamented looking at the nearly one hundred trees, unable to utter another word.
After finishing her words, Xiao Xian’s heart was also "thumping," not from nervousness but because of her newly discovered spatial ability: "Fifty years a copper artisan, witness a thousand plant ailments." Just now, everything she had spoken was verbatim, as she saw it. By accident, she had become a "quack doctor" able to diagnose the causes of diseases in plants. (To be continued.
