Chapter 919: Chapter 739: Found a Bubble_2
People who wanted to go to college faced less competition, and those who wanted to make money directly found positions and support from Nestor Corporation, so not everyone flocked to college as before.
The value of higher-level master’s and doctoral titles increased, as only those truly dedicated to academia would go through the effort to obtain them.
In addition, Nestor Corporation also administered a large number of "certificate exams," including traditional certificates for engineers, physicians, builders, teachers, etc.
They also include unique certifications like "Mangaka Certificate" for comic artists, "Qualified Husband/Wife Certificate" for facilitating spousal selection, and "Keyboard Political Literacy Certificate" for expressing social views online.
These certificates are extremely difficult to earn, so their value is highly recognized by the industry. Moreover, as long as one is capable, they can attain them even without an academic degree, further diminishing the importance of schooling.
Some people now refer to the Northern Archipelago as a Certificate Society, an Ability-focused Society.
Within this new educational system, Xu Cheng also began to form a vague plan.
She would first undergo the current primary education, then skip high school. The pressure from cultural courses and college entrance exams was too great. Xu Cheng only wanted to get a pilot’s license and become an honorable pilot. Then she would go to Shinobi Village to take the Mid-level Ninja exam and become a qualified Mid-level Ninja. That would make her life complete.
Ah, isn’t this a beautiful life? Xu Cheng lay in bed with a helmet on, attending classes. After class, she would cook her own meals, eat, then attend more classes, and study history in the afternoon.
Now, the history class is about the open history, not like the corporate education of the past, which profoundly ignored the Witch Era. With Nestor Corporation’s authorization of open history education, Xu Cheng learned about the history of the Witch Council rule, the Three Witch Wars, and other historical events.
Guagu... Xu Cheng thought to herself. The witches and humans of the past had made many mistakes, and their various methods failed to resolve the conflicts and problems between them.
They got it wrong from the start; we, the later generations, should avoid making the same mistakes.
At three in the afternoon, after school, Xu Cheng took off her helmet, blinked her eyes, got up from the bed to brush her teeth and wash her face, then dressed warmly, and took Snowball out to play.
"I’m going to make new friends today, so tell me when you see someone like that, okay?" Xu Cheng walked down the street, wobbling a bit.
"Woof woof!" Snowball quickened its pace in the streets, on the lookout for interesting children of the same age.
It gradually turned towards a building construction zone with narrow terrain and deep structure, where a large area of the city was still under construction. Tower cranes loomed overhead and buildings draped in tarps crisscrossed the area, reminding Xu Cheng of a maze built with blocks.
"Yagi Heavy Industries, huh." Xu Cheng looked at the banner hanging at the entrance of the building, "Why would there be children here?"
She saw some autonomous drones slowly flying overhead, laboriously dragging precast planks that were too heavy for the drones.
Probably due to the weather, humans were reluctant to work in such cold conditions, and it was still necessary for machines to do the work. When it got even colder, the machines wouldn’t be able to bear it either, and construction would come to a complete halt.
All around her, only the silent flight of drones was seen, and Xu Cheng spotted a child about her height pushing a cart near the cargo rails, trying hard to push a cartload of plastic panels to the destination.
She was dressed in an ill-fitting thick coat, her clothes were dirty, and her hair was green. She wasn’t any taller than the cart she was pushing.
A green-haired little girl? Xu Cheng thought.
Because she was very tired, the green-haired pushed another 10 steps and then couldn’t push anymore; she leaned on the cart to rest.
"Guagu!" Xu Cheng walked up to the green-haired little girl.
The green-haired looked up at Xu Cheng, blinked, not understanding why Xu Cheng came over.
Xu Cheng confidently patted her chest and then took over from the green-haired, pushing the cart with all her might, but was spent after only 5 steps.
"Gu!" Xu Cheng asked Snowball to push the cart.
"Woof!" Snowball did its best to stand up, with its front paws against the cart, steadily pushing it forward.
The green-haired nodded gratefully to Xu Cheng without saying a word, but she went back to where the carts were stationed, loaded more plastic panels onto the cart, and prepared to push another load to its destination.
Xu Cheng saw there were many more plastic panels to push and stood next to the green-haired little girl, helping her push together.
"Guagu?" Xu Cheng said.
"After pushing the cart, we can eat." The green-haired looked straight ahead and said.
"Guabu!" Xu Cheng pushed hard; she loved to eat.
Snowball pushed ten carts, and they together pushed a cart, transporting all the goods to the designated spot.
After detecting the specified amount of goods, large mechanical arms started to work, like an iron-handed giant, laying the plastic panels in their rightful place. The little ones below could take a breather.
"Huff huff..." Xu Cheng felt like her arms were about to break, with sweat accumulating under her clothes.
The green-haired little girl wiped her nose, then went over to a black settlement machine near the exit, swiping it once.
"Forty dollars." The green-haired waved to Xu Cheng, "Thanks for the help."
"Gu."
"Don’t you have a brain either? What’s your name?"
"Guagu."
"My name is Bubble. Have some sweet potatoes," said the girl with green hair.
Her eyes were also green, but if you looked closely, you’d see other colors mixed in.
Bubble took Xu Cheng out of the construction site and spent 1 Fund to buy 2 sweet potatoes from an automatic sweet potato roaster on the street.
She squatted in the snow and handed one to Xu Cheng.
"Huff huff..." Xu Cheng ate the sweet potatoes with Bubble, frequently glancing at the green-haired girl, "Do you have to keep working?"
"Work never ends," Bubble said while eating her sweet potato.
"Where are your mom and dad?"
"They died from waterborne diseases."
"Why did you come here?"
"The bridge here is relatively clean."
"Guabu."
"Come with me?" After finishing the baked sweet potatoes, Bubble got up.
"Guabu." Xu Cheng patted his stomach, feeling the warmth of the sweet potatoes inside, then followed Bubble.
Hidden underneath Bubble’s clothes were a lot of trinkets.
She took them out and at a bus stop at a street corner in District 24, she set up a stall to sell some handicrafts, miscellaneous items, and small ornaments, including brooches, keychains, screen protectors, batteries, headbands, bamboo baskets, and the like. Many things Xu Cheng hadn’t seen for a long time.
Dozens of unwanted items were laid out on a large plastic mat, with Bubble sitting behind waiting.
"Guabu guabu." Xu Cheng sat next to her, with no customers stopping at Bubble’s little stall.
It was really cold here. Xu Cheng shivered from the cold. Bubble even wore thinner clothes, her small face flushed red. They tried to shiver at the same frequency.
"Cold? I can lend you my clothes," Bubble looked at Xu Cheng.
"Guabu guabu." Xu Cheng offered his own printed cloak to Bubble.
"Huff huff..." Bubble was reluctant to wear such a delicate cloak, planning to use it to wrap the small trinkets on the ground.
"Guabu!" Xu Cheng called out to the passersby.
"It’s good stuff, someone will come to buy it," Bubble said as she hugged her knees, sitting behind the stall.
"Guabu..." Xu Cheng shook his head.
"If someone buys something, we can earn money," Bubble was full of hope.
"Guabu?" Xu Cheng asked what she wanted to buy.
"I want to buy a bicycle so I could go further to work," Bubble said.
When she talked about bicycles, Bubble’s tiny body straightened up.
"Guabu!" Xu Cheng made a mental note of that.
As it got darker, Xu Cheng looked up and realized it was time to go home.
"Guabu." Xu Cheng stood up.
"Are you leaving?" Bubble looked at her.
"Guabu." Xu Cheng picked up Snowball.
"See you tomorrow! Be safe!" Bubble waved vigorously at Xu Cheng.
Xu Cheng nodded fiercely at Bubble, with Snowball also saying goodbye to Bubble.
She felt that Bubble was nice.
When Xu Yang got home, he pushed the door to see designs, drafts, various parts printed in a mess, books scattered everywhere, and every terminal was lit up with pages of mechanical structures.
The 3D printer in the corner was continuously clacking, creating more plastic parts without stop.
"What are you making?" Xu Yang asked curiously.
"A bicycle." Xu Cheng squatted on the floor, engrossed in her work.
