Chapter 604: Chapter 514 Breakthrough
Several breaths later, Rinne was punched by Pan Ruiyi and sent flying to the far end of the arena.
She rolled on the ground several times before lying there, but the next second, Rinne stood up again.
Wiping the blood from the corner of her mouth, she looked coldly at Pan Ruiyi in the center, who seemed like a harbinger of death. With a Dragon Blade in each hand, Rinne took steps toward Pan Ruiyi.
"Oh," Pan Ruiyi stood in place with her spear in hand, spreading her arms, "Not running away, but coming towards me instead?"
Without a word, once Rinne was within 10 meters, she activated her subjective slowdown implant, and her speed increased several-fold in an instant, almost becoming a blur! Her body’s modified organs supported Rinne’s high-speed action, and in a blink, she circled behind Pan Ruiyi, swinging both blades straight at her back armor!
Pan Ruiyi kept her eyes forward, motionless. Just as Rinne thought she had succeeded, Pan Ruiyi suddenly leaped upward, her whole body soaring into the air, then spun around and delivered a fierce kick, aimed straight at Rinne’s chest!
Bang!
Rinne grunted, and the place where she was kicked felt like a black hole that drained all her energy and strength. Her body instantly flew backward, landing heavily on her back, sliding across the ground for over ten meters, utterly spent.
Pan Ruiyi had already reduced her kicking force as much as possible, for her it was like kicking a small crumpled paper ball on the ground, using the lightest force possible. Even so, she had completely disabled Rinne’s ability to fight.
"It’s not that exaggerated," Pan Ruiyi said as she pulled Rinne up.
"Huff... huff..." Rinne’s face paled, her confidence waning.
She knew all too well that the woman before her had reduced her power to the lowest possible level, sparing 99% of her strength, and yet with the most negligible amount of effort, she had sent Rinne sprawling.
This was no longer a gap, but a chasm—one she could never cross in her lifetime.
Rinne had once been full of confidence regarding her own combat talents and path of growth, but now she was forced to deeply reflect.
Even if she underwent training for decades, or even a hundred years, could she defeat the Battle Witch before her? Moreover, the opponent wouldn’t stand still either, surely continuing to grow, meaning the gap between them would only widen, to the point that for Rinne, there might never be hope of victory.
After regulating her breathing, Rinne observed with a frown. The opponent spoke with a synthesized voice through the helmet to disguise her identity, but Rinne recognized that ferocious Prajna mask. She was the strongest Battle Witch of Nestor Corporation, having earned numerous accolades in repeated campaigns.
"...Who are you?" Rinne ventured to ask.
"I, Da Pan, head of security!" Pan Ruiyi confidently said, "I’m also the hand-to-hand combat instructor. If you are to undertake advanced combat training, I need to test your foundation first. You’ve got a pretty solid foundation."
"..." Rinne remained silent; she wasn’t in the mood for jokes, feeling her own foundation was exceptionally weak.
Now she was once again confronted with the stark difference between the real corporate elite and a street thug.
Rinne examined Pan Ruiyi from head to toe, once again acknowledging the enormous gap between them.
Pan Ruiyi was tall and clad in advanced Witch Armor, with extraordinary reach in her arms and legs, meaning Rinne’s short limbs could not even get close to her, and the other hadn’t even used that ridiculously large spear in her hands!
This monstrous humanoid tank wherever it went, turned into rivers of blood, almost representing the pinnacle of Battle Witches. Wasn’t the reason the corporation trained and nurtured Witches exactly to achieve such a supreme being capable of turning the tides of battle?
"Of course, you’d be afraid," Pan Ruiyi looked down at Rinne, speaking seriously, "and surely you’d lose confidence. I’m here to intimidate you, to tell you that a rookie like you doesn’t stand a chance on a real battlefield, and that you must train, train, train, just like you did with your hacking, keep this in mind day and night. Only then you might stand a chance against all powerful enemies."
"You know I’ve been trained as a hacker?" Rinne looked up at Pan Ruiyi, "Did Mr. Web Monitor tell you?"
"Yeah, he sent me here, otherwise I’d be sleeping now," Pan Ruiyi said nonchalantly, "So, are you up for special training? Wanting to master both Hacker Witch and Battle Witch skills, it’s not that simple!"
Hesitation.
Rinne fell into great hesitation.
The arrangements by Mr. Web Monitor were naturally harsh. She had expressed a desire to become stronger, and he had spared no mercy in showing Rinne the most brutal reality—the path that lay before her was one of bloodied and arduous trials.
Rinne wished to heed Mr. Web Monitor’s words, to become the best version of herself. She had both hacking and combat talents, so she didn’t want to rely solely on hacking for survival. Once restrained by others, surviving close calls in various street crises, Rinne had thought how wonderful it would be if her fighting abilities were as excellent as her hacking skills?
Such an opportunity now lay before Rinne, who had to make a decision: either accept the trials full of peril and explore the limits of her potential, or choose a more comfortable path, content with her current swordsmanship and monomolecular wire skills, and go back to continue being her Hacker Witch.
...Was she a coward?
Never.
"Take me to train," Rinne said, looking up at Pan Ruiyi.
Pan Ruiyi nodded. Bravery was a precious quality.
She led Rinne away from the clearing, entered the passcode, and opened the door to the room deep within the training level.
Inside were rows of combat simulation pods where the most fierce, battle-ready soldiers of Nestor’s core legion lay, undergoing simulation training, clad in virtual equipment. Several well-trained Battle Witches were lying in another row of pods, facing different forms of harsh challenges.
"Each training session can last at most 2 hours," Pan Ruiyi said as she saw a pod open and the soldier inside was hesitant to leave, his expression not one of confidence but of panic and tension, "Inside, you’ll repeatedly experience killing, shooting, and sword-fighting. You’ll face company soldiers in trenches, fight ninjas in toxic gas-filled abandoned factories, confront bandits on wilderness, and combat assault teams on space motherships. You’ll engage with various elite forces, attempting to challenge the Invisible Imperial Guard, Tian Que Attendants, Pale Legion, Senior Samurais, and the Undying Guard. You’ll also encounter other strong figures recorded by our company, like the Quantum Warrior, Yanagawa Fumihiko, Wei Shiyue in dragon form, me, 102, and A40."
Rinne listened silently. She preferred real combat over idle talk, not uttering a word when it was time to be serious.
"Your path is divided into four levels," Pan Ruiyi stated, gesturing four with her hand in front of Rinne.
"The first level is that of the layman, where you fight using your powerful weapons, reflexes, and implants, relying solely on your physical endurance and existing combat experience. Occasionally you may defeat particularly strong opponents because there are many factors that affect the outcome of a battle; sometimes luck plays a role too."
"The second level is the expert, where you will have complete mastery over one or two types of weapons. You’ll treat them more dearly than your closest friends and family, knowing all their tricks and capacities, with the performance and detailed parameters of the weapons crystal clear to you. You can achieve many exaggerated feats with them, unleash a variety of killing techniques, experienced and powerful, making light work of laymen!"
"The third level includes both masters and grandmasters. You’ll transform over decades of battle, comprehending all the nuances of combat. You’ll peer into the threshold of ’martial arts’—I won’t explain this part in detail, as you’ll understand it in time. The martial arts cultivation in the Eastern Hemisphere values refining the heart; you’ll find your natural instincts amidst killing and fighting."
"Only at the fourth level can one truly be considered a legend, becoming a ’Legend’ that people talk about isn’t easy. Like Yanagawa Fumihiko, the First Warrior, who has mastered ’martial arts’ itself after over a hundred years of combat. This is the peak a mortal can reach in approaching the divine. Beyond that are the domains of Reality Manipulators and supernatural beings. If one day you reach this level, yes, you will definitely become a legend."
After listening to Pan Ruiyi’s explanation, Rinne slowly nodded. Bloodstained, dangerous, and difficult, but this was exactly what Rinne eagerly sought.
To become strong at all costs.
Under Pan Ruiyi’s arrangement, Rinne lay down in a training pod.
"Being the Hacker Witch actually comes in handy," Pan Ruiyi explained, "You can understand those parameters. Start easy and progress gradually."
Rinne closed her eyes, beginning to set up a simulation suitable for herself. She found herself in a desolate wasteland, surrounded by all sorts of monsters and bandits, like a game, but with characters who had upgradeable abilities, and without feeling the pain of wounds. Here, Rinne could only rely on herself, and everything was absolutely lifelike, even more brutal than reality.
She would be forged in fire.
...
hours later, Rinne lay staring at the lights above, taking about 5 minutes to come back to her senses realizing she wasn’t dead but was just lying in a virtual pod. In her last simulation, she had been torn to pieces by a group of modified bandit brutes.
Shaking her head, Rinne climbed out of the simulation pod and silently stretched her legs. She returned to the clearing and called out an Elite Soldier once more.
"Where is the enemy!" The Elite Soldier swung its weapon at Rinne, who, expressionless, sidestepped the swing and thrust her Dragon Blade into its body. It retreated quickly, and with a twist of her blade, it conceded defeat, signaling its need for repairs.
Rinne didn’t understand why she used to take time when fighting against an Elite Soldier.
She pushed the door open and went out. In the corridor outside, Little Fool was reading a book with a small pack on her back. Looking up and seeing Rinne, Little Fool handed her a card with a message from Xu Yang. It included a storage information network site for her to download some materials for further dives later on.
Rinne picked Little Fool up and headed to the Xisheng Shrine’s restaurant for a meal.
"...When will Mr. Web Monitor start seeing me as a real woman instead of an apprentice?" Rinne muttered to herself on the way.
"Quack." Little Fool actually knew but couldn’t articulate it clearly; Rinne would have to realize it herself.
