Chapter 574: Chapter 489: People of the Night Path
```
"Ha..." Rinne suddenly remembered she is a Witch, capable of working, getting married, but without offspring.
"Overall, I’ve already gotten used to being a ’resident of Nestor Community’," the hotel owner turned to glance at the Nestor trademark hanging on the wall, "it’s somewhat a reliable community."
Following his gaze, Rinne also saw a special Nestor Community segment on the smart screen.
She scrolled over and saw that there was currently a vote being discussed about whether to retrofit six local factories with environmental kits to further reduce acid rain and water pollution.
"Who is paying?" Rinne was curious.
"The community collects money, the factory’s benefits, people’s donations, and... you see, the income from this hotel of mine," the hotel owner spread his hands, "public affairs of society are supported by everyone involved, that’s the meaning of unity, I can’t just make money without contributing. After environmental improvements, more people will come to the hotel, so I can’t keep the funds to myself, I have to contribute my share."
"Are you in favor or against?" Rinne asked.
"I’ve already voted in favor," the hotel owner nodded, "after all, if the factories reduce pollution I wouldn’t have to install water filters on every faucet in the hotel, to deal with rust and bugs, spending a lot of money to regularly replace the filter materials."
"Besides these things, what other benefits are there for you?" Rinne felt everyone acts for self-interest, "according to you, benefit is paramount."
"Of course," the hotel owner laughed, "didn’t you see that the equipment here is all very new? Nestor Corporation has basic support programs, they’re generous to someone like me who operates with integrity, a special subsidy of 200,000 to renovate the hotel, this is the first time in my life such a good thing has happened. Their information center doesn’t have any complicated reporting or multi-level approvals. But now, the hardest thing to deal with is the monkey."
"What, do you want the monkey to vote?" Rinne took the monkey off her head, holding its arms.
The monkey scrutinized Rinne, glancing around with pleading eyes. She put the monkey on the counter and took out some cookie crumbs from her pocket to feed it, the monkey seemed much more spirited.
"First off, the monkey is also an employee of the hotel, creating value for Xijin Town; secondly, it knows what the residents are voting for." The hotel owner took the monkey back, "Monkey, do you think we should replace the factory’s smokestacks and wastewater processors with environmentally friendly ones?"
"Chirp chirp chirp." The monkey climbed onto the smart screen, furiously tapping the voting button, but it wasn’t a committee member and didn’t have its own account.
"Look how actively it participates, I believe the monkeys of Xijin Town also have the right to vote... it’s an intelligent life form." The hotel owner placed the monkey back on the ground, and the monkey took a broom to start cleaning garbage, "Once I collect 100 signatures, I will bring up a public vote with the community, can you help me sign?"
Rinne signed a false name on the signature book, while Seeking Shadow remained still.
"Please, ma’am, sign your name," the hotel owner put the signature book in front of Seeking Shadow, "we’re just 20 signatures short of giving the monkey a chance."
"I... I am luggage," Seeking Shadow looked down.
Rinne walked forward with a smile, Seeking Shadow followed, and the monkey pulled over a cart.
The cart was loaded with Rinne’s boxes and Seeking Shadow’s battery pack. The monkey was stronger than they had imagined, exerting force to push the cart forward; it weighed about 30 kilos and was nearly half the height of a person.
"If monkeys can vote, Synthetic Humans can also vote," Seeking Shadow watched the monkey pushing the cart, "I think I am smarter than a monkey."
"?" The monkey looked back at her.
Rinne realized this was a macaque, much smarter than the wild macaques she remembered.
So, she instinctively stopped the monkey to check behind its ear; sure enough, there was a QR code, secured by a simple passlock.
After cracking it, she received real information - this wasn’t just any ordinary monkey, but a genetically edited companion pet monkey by Rainforest Wanwu Company, with no sales record, probably stolen by the hotel owner from somewhere.
"Monkeys are closer to humans than Synthetic Humans are." Rinne unlocked the door, "Luggage Miss, just stay with me in one room."
Seeking Shadow silently climbed onto the cart, adding to its weight.
The monkey used all its strength for a push but couldn’t move it. It scratched the fur on its head and reached out to Rinne for more cookie crumbs. It then walked away along the floor.
"You really can’t take a joke, can you?" Rinne said with a smile, pushing the cart with luggage and Seeking Shadow into the room.
Rinne saw the neatly arranged room, with a clean double bed, complete with bedding.
There was a tatami area and a self-service tea maker next to it. As the hotel owner had said, every faucet was equipped with a huge water filter, designed to filter the highly polluted tap water common in the suburbs.
"Let’s just settle down here for now." She grabbed a cup of water, not too concerned about the filtering efficacy, because Rinne had a modified stomach and could live on even radioactive waste water.
She gazed at the scenery outside, the lush greenery of the forest stretching up Mingge Mountain. Legend had it that Eternal Cherry Blossom Shrine and Thousand Blessings Shrine were located on the yin and yang sides of the mountain, together guarding a great demon that had been slain last year by the Crimson Sea Descendant, Clares the Second.
Seeking Shadow sat in a corner of the room gathering information, occasionally sending document packs to Rinne for intelligence analysis, investigating potential risks on the Colonel’s route here.
If nothing went wrong, there were thirty-eight hours left until he reached land. They had to ensure the boat wasn’t sunk and protect the Colonel from assassins before he transferred.
