Chapter 556: Chapter 477: Legacy
Leaving the apartment, they headed to a secluded bar with its own courtyard.
"This is a small bar tucked deep in Night Alley... quiet and undisturbed," Rinne led Lu Jing through the dimly lit bar hall.
The room was small; a blue-haired female bartender provided service behind the counter, with rows of spirits waiting to be mixed displayed in the glass cabinet behind.
Rinne took care of ordering, and after a brief preparation, the bartender pushed a pink drink across the counter to Lu Jing. It was a non-alcoholic sweet beverage, and then handed Rinne a cola cocktail.
"I thought I was really going to drink alcohol," Lu Jing took two sips of the pink drink, sweetly rushing like candy.
"Getting drunk wouldn’t be good," Rinne took a sip from the edge of the glass, "You’re the kind of girl who needs to live under people’s care."
"Maybe..." Lu Jing said softly, "Like coming out to drink this time, I didn’t bring any money."
"Did you say you had no savings?" Rinne propped her beautiful chin with one hand, rocking the glass gently in front of Lu Jing.
Lu Jing looked through the pale brown liquid and the ice, catching sight of the Rinne’s deep purple eyes. Her white short hair fell cleanly, she looked practiced. Both her seductive gaze and her slightly lifted mouth corners proved too much for Lu Jing to resist.
"There’s still 730 Funds in the card," Lu Jing thought to evade Rinne’s gaze, but on the other hand, she couldn’t help wanting to take another look at her.
"You’re from a giant corporation, aren’t you?" Rinne said.
"Um..." Lu Jing wanted to change the subject, but Rinne’s hand was already resting on the back of Lu Jing’s hand.
"Heavenly Cardinal Manufacturing?" Rinne asked, her gaze roaming over Lu Jing.
"Yes," Lu Jing admitted, looking down, "How did you know?"
"The label on the lining."
"Ah!" Lu Jing put on the green coat, "It’s company issued. You already know too much about me, and I still don’t know anything about you."
Rinne leaned on the table, tilting her head to look at Lu Jing, who also leaned down to meet her eyes.
"Someone important to me," Rinne whispered, "my entire former squad, were all killed by the big corporations."
"I don’t even have someone important," Lu Jing sighed.
"I can be," Rinne moved her face closer, "I can help you."
"Help with what?"
"Leave Heavenly Cardinal Manufacturing."
"No need," Lu Jing’s gaze shifted to the counter, "Thanks for your kindness, but I’m Miss Lu’s asset, I don’t have the privilege to escape. Just to maintain the status quo is already good, I’m really afraid of an incident that would lead to a recall."
"So," Rinne said, "...do you know ’Digital Mind’?"
"I don’t know," Lu Jing pretended she hadn’t heard clearly. She felt uneasy, sensing that Rinne had an ulterior motive.
Seeing Lu Jing play dumb, Rinne also averted her gaze, looking towards the wall on the other side of the bar.
For the next half-hour, their gazes did not cross again.
Gradually, both of their drinks were finished, and suddenly strange sounds came from the alley outside.
"Where is the enemy!"
About a dozen seconds later, it sounded again.
"Where is the enemy!"
Lu Jing stood up and walked outside.
"It’s just an ’Elite Soldier’ making a fuss," Rinne followed behind Lu Jing, "shouting and yelling, so annoying."
"It wouldn’t repeat that for no reason," Lu Jing quickly dashed out, "it’s in trouble."
Once in the alley, Rinne saw an Elite Soldier Robot standing in the middle of the alley.
It was surrounded by five or six youths and teenagers.
They were chuckling, tapping it with a hose in their hands while taking photos, recording videos, and laughing. A teen boy was crouching on the ground, using a hand tool to remove parts of the Elite Soldier and putting a plastic bucket over its head.
"Where is the enemy!" The Elite Soldier futilely turned its head, scanning for threats amidst the young citizens surrounding it.
"Hit it!"
"Flatten it!"
"Stupid robot... haha!"
Clang clang, they vented their cheap anger and strength, controlling the force of their beating with hoses and sticks, prodding and hitting the Elite Soldier now and then as it spun around, confused.
"Where is the enemy!" It removed the plastic bucket from its head, repeated the voice prompt, drawing their mockery and laughter.
"—Get away from it!" Lu Jing, holding a sword, rushed over swinging it left and right.
Only then did Rinne realize that the sword was heavier than she had imagined. When it smashed onto the concrete, it instantly made a gash.
"Woah—"
"Help!"
"Murder—" The youths and children screamed as they fled.
"Enemy!" Sensing the children were threatened, the Elite Soldier immediately raised its rifle and began shooting at Lu Jing. She panicked, trying to dodge to the side but unable to avoid the bullets no matter what!
Rinne instantly activated the power of her implants, and the world slowed down.
She rushed to Lu Jing’s side, leaving a trail of afterimages, swept her off her feet, kicked off the walls to the roof of a building, and achieved it all in one fluid motion.
Lu Jing felt she was whisked from the alley to the bar’s rooftop in an instant. She panted, still not recovered from the shock of the gunfire, thinking she was going to be riddled with holes, yet she was unscathed.
Rinne lay on the ground, pressing behind her ear to check the temperature, while quickly hacking into the Elite Soldier to prevent it from continuing in combat mode.
"...This is difficult," Rinne frowned deeply, "...Its security module is connected to the Helis Sea. I can’t get in, let alone calm it down."
"I’ll contact the company’s security department! Do you know its identification code?" Lu Jing squatted on the ground, sending a message to Nestor Corporation.
"SP-B4544[N]!" Rinne quickly reported, at that moment the Elite Soldier Robot had already climbed up, ready to fire at the enemy.
