“Is she serious?” Bax looked to Xu Yang for help.

“To some extent, yes,” Xu Yang said.

“Let me clarify the situation for you—from the beginning: The rat plague has persisted for three days and is now subdued.

To cut losses, Shenkong Tower was blown up by another Matteo, along with Sally and a large number of rats, leading to endless future troubles.

However, the Bronze Titan Excavation Site remains a key point of contention among the mega-corporations, and the main force of Black Fire Innovation has already retreated, so you could say your mission has failed.”

“…I see,” Bax struggled to process the information.

In short, those days were over.

She gazed out the window wistfully, silent, while the darkness outside hugged close like a closing stage curtain, declaring the end of a drama.

“You have reason to feel unsettled,” Xu Yang offered further comfort.

“After all, not everyone has experienced resurrection.

But if you truly miss your companions, then live for their share too, and fulfill the ideals they couldn’t accomplish.”

“They gave me a name behind my back,” Bax’s eyes stayed focused in the darkness.

“Mizuiro Yoshioka—a good man gave it to me, his daughter shared the name, but she died of a serious illness.

Everyone hoped I’d live on with that name.

They treated me well; they were tough folks and mercenaries, under contract with small companies, signing Yin-Yang agreements, selling their lives for juggernauts like Blackfire, dying without any compensation.”

“As long as you’re alive, there’s a possibility to do that,” Xu Yang said.

“To fulfill all their wishes, Miss Yoshioka.”

“Bax has a nicer ring to it,” Farosa said.

“Either works for me,” Bax nodded, releasing a long sigh.

“Looks like I’ll need to work, earn money, and send it to their families, hoping they’re still out there.”

“You can start by following me,” Xu Yang said.

“If there’s suitable work, I’ll pay you a salary, and your room and board can be taken care of on this Shuttle Machine.”

“What can you do besides those octopus tricks?” Farosa eyed Bax’s ink-stained hands.

“I am a Hacker Witch,” Bax slowly recalled the knowledge that had been instilled in her.

“I can crack some electronic programs, solve some technical issues.”

“Doesn’t sound anywhere near as capable as Xu Yang’s work,” said Farosa, who had witnessed Xu Yang’s abilities and wasn’t interested in a common hacker.

“Of course, Digital Mind…” Bax sounded a bit dispirited.

“It would be nice if you could help check the Shuttle Machine,” Lila suggested proactively.

“Miss Yoshioka, would you mind tuning this Shuttle Machine?”

“…I, I understand.” Bax snapped back to reality and moved to the control panel, where Lila yielded her seat.

Bax slowly coded operating rules for the Shuttle Machine, improving its energy consumption ratio, and the work helped her recover from her sour mood.

“She still didn’t answer me,” Farosa came back to herself, murmuring to Xu Yang.

“Why doesn’t she want the power that’s within easy reach?

I already said so much.”

“It’s impossible to conquer everyone with a single speech,” Xu Yang massaged Farosa’s head.

“Grow up quickly.”

“Speaking of which,” Bax turned back.

“You mentioned the rats and Sally…

Are they completely finished?”

“Yes,” Xu Yang said.

“They caused a lot of trouble but were killed in a security crackdown by the company, putting up a final desperate fight against Matteo and ending up blasted to pieces.”

“It was Black Fire Innovation causing trouble; they were always trying to contact the Ratmen forces,” remembered Bax, recalling the information she had.

“Sally and her kin lived in the nearby Rat Village.

Matteo found them three months in advance, provided Sally with a stamp, trained giant rats and enhanced Sally’s magic power, and promised to help them conquer Aizu City, turning the entire Underground City into a home for the Ratmen.

But it was all a lie.”

“Matteo’s real purpose was…”

“To create chaos as a smokescreen while they abducted the Ancient Witch,” Bax pointed at Farosa.

“Everything was just for her…”

“Point that finger at me again, and I’ll kill you,” Farosa said, clearly displeased.

“You should be more approachable,” Xu Yang said.

“Why must you always be so fierce?”

“I am the leader of the witches, and I will inevitably become the new queen of the witches,” Farosa lifted her eyebrows.

“If I allow any novice witch to offend me like this, how can I govern?”

“Violence only breeds rebellion,” Xu Yang said.

“Surely, I don’t need to explain that.”

“Hmm…” Farosa curled her lip.

“We have too much to accomplish,” Xu Yang leaned back in his chair.

“Like with you, for instance.

You’re strong, but going solo won’t cut it.

We need to recruit more witches with various powers to our cause, only then can we stand against other companies, even challenge the corporations, and ultimately achieve our goal—to change the status quo.

So, recruiting more witches and expanding our base is the top priority.”

“Why would witches want to join you?” Bax asked.

It’s always about power, Farosa thought to herself.

But you’re not simply fond of power, are you?

Oh, I need to change my speech again, how annoying.

“`

Farosa’s gentle gaze fell on Bax as she approached him.

“I can help you grow,” Farosa softly caressed Bax’s cheek, her voice tinged with surprise.

“In my era, the path to enhancing witches was very clear, first seeking help from gods, who would respond with gifts and blessings.”

“I…

I heard gods no longer exist,” Bax felt confused.

Companies destroyed all the temples, disbanded secret ritual groups, and prevented the ancient powers from resurrecting.

“But in me, the glory of the gods has been restored.

After all, I am a faithful servant of the gods, and it’s only right that they now entrust me with a portion of their duties,” Farosa whispered in Bax’s ear.

“Now, I can act on some of the will of the gods, promoting and rewarding loyal servants like you, enabling you to protect yourself, fulfill your ideals, and prove your worth.”

“How do I do that?” Bax’s voice trembled.

“Welcoming the gift with an open heart,” said Farosa, “and being grateful for what follows.”

She prompted Bax to sit up straight.

Xu Yang caught a glimpse of Farosa’s hand undergoing some changes; her skin seemed to become softer, covered in bluish-purple scars, no longer pale, as she moved her hand upward, closer to Bax.

“What do you feel?” Farosa asked quietly.

“Moist…,” Bax breathed heavily, “…the ocean…

reaching out with its tentacles…”

“Say, ‘I obey Farosa, the Witch Goddess’.”

“I obey…

Farosa, the Witch Goddess…” Bax, who was already a bit afraid of Farosa, found it harder to restrain himself now and struggled to make his voice clear.

“That’s right,” Farosa kissed Bax’s forehead lightly, then withdrew her hand.

“I grant you power.”

“Do you notice any changes?” Xu Yang was curious.

“Magic power…

it’s spilling out,” Bax stood up, trembling continuously in the cabin.

“The coating has limited the leakage of magical fluctuations,” Lila said, “but I still recommend installing a more powerful magic shielding device for this shuttle machine.”

After being blessed by Farosa, Bax uncontrollably collapsed to the ground, spewing a tremendous amount of ink from his hands as if he were an ink-making factory.

This black liquid substance went beyond ordinary ink’s definition and possessed some form of aberrant vitality.

They first disintegrated, then began self-fusing from liquid state, forming smaller ink creatures that wriggled across the floor, like countless tiny black lives, uttering repressed whispers and cries as they searched for their mother, as if a new race had been created from nothing.

“Magic power needs development,” Farosa said.

“I just gave you a little liberation.

Heh, spraying ink seems to be only useful for scribes as ink, but you should know, this is already quite a strong form of active creative magic power.”

“They look very powerful.” Xu Yang poked a tiny ink creature on the floor, which became angry and bit his finger, but it couldn’t penetrate the nano armor.

“The strength of a witch lies not only in the magnitude of magic power but also in the understanding and development of one’s abilities,” Farosa said.

“Xu Yang, you once said some witches capable of germinating plants could only work as gardeners under the Witch Council; you were wrong.

If they were smart enough, they could transform a vast tract of land into an enchanted forest ecology surrounded by ancient trees and become immortal queens of the greenwoods, greater than working for corporations.”

“This is the second innovation,” Xu Yang realized, recognizing the new power in Farosa.

“With ‘the gods’, they’re reopening the ladder of witches’ growth in abilities, allowing witches to create their own systems, continually evolve, and the broken lineage to return.”

“Bax, you’re fortunate to have become my loyal servant,” Farosa stroked Bax’s hair.

“Your potential is boundless, surpassing some mechanical bodies.”

“Mechanical bodies will be your nemesis,” Lila said.

“The giant corporations also know how to tap into witches’ potential, and as the arms race escalates in the future, major companies will lift their restrictions one after another, not hesitating to support their witches to counter your little Council.”

“No, I’m sure the power she’s given is something no company can offer…” Bax leaned against the wall, and soon, the little ink creatures on the ground made of spilled ink began to die one by one; she extended her hand to recall them, and the ink peeled off the floor and re-entered her body, leaving no trace of ink stains.

“It’s like being reborn…

You should know the Prosthetics Clinic blocked my magic circuits, but she easily destroyed those shackles.”

“Gratitude and compliance are the virtues I wish to see in you,” Farosa tenderly looked at Bax.

“Will you do this?”

Before Bax could make up her mind, a series of soft digging noises came from outside.

“What’s that?” Farosa frowned.

“Another company’s lackey?”

“No, it’s a familiar face,” Xu Yang said.

Inside the built-in channel, Lila sent a detailed listening report, reassuring him it was nothing to worry about.

It was Ratman, with the remains of Sally.
