Cursed Lycan's Scarred Mate -
Chapter 89: A glimpse of Lunaria’s Guardian
Chapter 89: A glimpse of Lunaria’s Guardian
Obsession? How much did a Goddess of the Old World have to love her Guardian that it turned to something twisted, such as obsession?
"Loved...her Guardian?" Vivian lips parted in disbelief and her eyes expanded with surprise. "Was that not... forbidden?" As far as I’ve known, the gods and goddesses of the Old World were forbidden from indulging human feelings. How did the Goddess Lunaria’s love affair escape the eyes and ears of the other gods?"
The Lycan Alpha plopped down on the cell floor in a criss-cross position, folding his hind legs underneath him. Vivian mimicked him on the other end of the cell, their hands joining together through the cell bars.
"Lunaria defied all of the gods for her guardian’s sake," the Lycan related, absentmindedly rubbing slow circles on Vivian’s wrist. "Her Guardian was from a race of ancient humans, part elf and part warlock. Their kind was cultivated to become soldiers of the upper realms, guardians for the gods. Lunaria treasured him more than her own life and her love for him grew into something dark that brought about her madness."
It was believed that the Goddess Lunaria committed taboo by indulging in a romantic affair with her Guardian. As a goddess, she should never have embraced human emotions or pursued them.
Thus, the corruption of such human feelings twisted and distorted the purity of the light magic she wielded within her.
Love turned into obsession.
Admiration turned into suspicion.
Goodwill turned into mistrust.
And the goddess Lunaria was never
the same again. In the end, her Guardian deemed himself culpable wholeheartedly and accepted his cursed fate without rebellion.
"Lunaria was... the light of both worlds," the Lycan said, his mouth stretching upwards, a movement that was something akin to a smile. "At times, she was so stubborn that one wouldn’t know what to do with her. And other times... she was so headstrong and kind."
"Her tale is...tragic and sad," Vivian voiced, tears springing to her eyes. Although the Lycan barely revealed much detail, it was enough to earn her mournful sorrows for the Goddess Lunaria and her Guardian. "I imagine their love was full of pain and obstacles."
Once again, the Lycan Alpha’s golden amber eyes softened with anguish that was buried within him for far too long. He closed his eyes to suppress whatever meagre droplets of tears welled in his eyes, hoping they would soak into the fur coat on his face unnoticed.
There was one achingly curious question on Vivian’s mind; however, she was sceptical about posing it to the Lycan Alpha.
He...I wonder if he is Goddess Lunaria’s Guardian. Vivian thought, noticing his golden amber eyes were glossy when he opened them again. He speaks about the goddess...as if he were part of her life."
Noticing that Vivian was scrutinising him, the Lycan Alpha cleared his throat and reminded himself why Ronan had initially switched control with him.
"Enough of that. It no longer matters," the Lycan remarked acerbically and Vivian nodded. "The reason why we lost control today is because... the curse is growing stronger."
The Lycan further explained that the curse cast upon him and Ronan was rapidly morphing into something that would no longer be within their control. For as long as Ronan hosted his spirit, the Lycan lady dormant as much as possible to avoid such outbursts.
However, the thought of losing Vivian forever was so damaging that it triggered the last threads of restraint on their curse. When unthinkable scenarios entered their minds about Vivian, it was enough to awaken the darkness.
A darkness that they believed would help them find Vivian by rampaging.
"So it was my fault." Vivian looked down apologetically, her lips pressed into a thin line. "I’m so sorry... I should never have run off like that. Just like how I ran after Avery. I’m so sorry for causing you trouble."
The last thing Ronan and his Lycan wanted was for Vivian to apologise for something that they both didn’t blame her for. In fact, the thought never crossed their mind to hold her accountable for their curse becoming even more unstable than it already was.
"You have nothing to apologise for. Losing control of our curse is a result of weak will," the Lycan Alpha countered, interlocking his claws with her fingers gently. "Ronan and I have been teetering far too much on the edge. We cannot afford to let a repeat of this happen, especially when we hold the position of Lycan Alpha leader amongst the last Lycans."
Perhaps no one would ever come to fathom the weight of the responsibilities Ronan shouldered. And Vivian reminded herself that there was still more to the Lycan Alpha she needed to learn.
What were his duties as the Leader of the Lycans like?
How did he spend his days in Frosthowl Frontier when he was further up in the North?
What kind of lives did the Lycans lead away from everyone else?
There was much information unknown to Vivian and she wanted to learn about every little detail about him. Previously, gathering intel on Ronan formed part of her motives instigated by Alaric, but now Vivian wanted to learn about her mate more than anything else.
Her thoughts were interrupted when something soft and fluffy brushed against her leg. She tilted her head to the side, recognising it was the black cat she’d seen before when Ronan was still recovering.
Like before, Vivian gauged an unsettling feeling about the feline. It might have been strange to think that a cat possessed malicious intentions, but Vivian didn’t quite like the vibe the feline gave off.
The cat easily slipped through the cell bars, casually approaching Ronan and brushing her cheek up against his arm. The Lycan Alpha glared, grabbing the cat by her scruff and lifting her up.
The black cat hissed, baring her canines, and the Lycan regarded her warily.
"Where did you come from, creature?" The Lycan questioned, keeping the cat at arm’s length as she tried to swipe her paws at him.
"You do not know this cat?" Vivian asked, observing the exchange between them. "I thought you would since she seemed fond of Ronan when he was still recovering from MoonBind Draught."
The Lycan’s gaze followed back to Vivian and he disregarded the cat.
"Unlike Ronan, I do not pay attention to insignificant little creatures," the Lycan remarked and the cat hissed louder in frustration. "For its insolence, I should skewer this dry fluff of swamp weeds."
Vivian burst out into a fit of laughter at the Lycan’s comparison, clutching her hand against her chest. She didn’t know that he could be hilarious or detest smaller animals that much. She found his reaction to the black act rather amusing.
"Do you think this is funny, little wolf?" The Lycan glared, not in a hostile or angry manner, but rather a playful one. "This swamp weed has the audacity to brush up against me."
"She’s just a cat," Vivian said as a reminder, her laughter gradually dying down. "Calling her swamp weed is a bit mean, don’t you think?"
"She’s not you so I don’t care," the Lycan stated firmly, tossing the cat through the cell bars into Vivian’s lap.
The she-wolf caught the black cat by surprise, gently cradling her in her arms.
"Poor little cat, he’s a mean guy, isn’t he?" Vivian said softly, pouting sullenly to express to the black cat that she was on her side. However, the cat didn’t calm down as Vivian would have expected.
Instead, she became more unruly and Vivian released her, but before she could run off, the black cat scratched Vivian deeply on her arm. If it were sudden, like trying to escape Vivian’s arms, the she-wolf wouldn’t have minded.
However, it seemed the black cat deliberately raked her claws hard and deep into Vivian’s arm. The she-wolf recoiled, hissing in pain and backing away from the black cat.
Enraged, the Lycan Alpha stood up abruptly on his hind legs and grabbed the cell bars so strongly that the iron compressed under his grip. He growled warningly and the black cat ran off in fear, disappearing deeper into the dungeon.
"That ball of swamp weed..." the Lycan growled ferociously. "When I get my claws on her, she’s dead."
Vivian grimaced, her arms fresh with blood that oozed from the three long gashes carved into her flesh. The skin felt raw and burnt, and she gritted her teeth.
The Lycan’s gaze softened worriedly and he reached through the cell bars for her.
"Let me see, princess."
