Cursed Lycan's Scarred Mate -
Chapter 67: A strange anomaly and an unknown memory
Chapter 67: A strange anomaly and an unknown memory
Offering moral support to Vivian, Soran chuckled almost cruelly, but over the waves of agony seeping into her body, the she-wolf was ignorant of his true intent flashing on his face.
The Wickan smirked triumphantly when the desired effects of his method began to surface. While Vivian writhed from pain and discomfort, clawing at her own skin to leave marks, Soran noticed the appearance of an anomaly.
A thick, ethereal chain of spiritual origin seemed to spur out from Vivian’s chest. The metal chain cloaked in a golden glow of magic, levitated in the air, wriggling slowly, much like a worm.
Soran’s eyes expanded with a look of disbelief and astonishment.
He whipped his head back and roared with laughter.
"I cannot believe it actually exists!" Soran exclaimed, his mouth curving in a victorious grin. He yanked the chain, immediately receiving an electrical shock, which made him jerk his hand back with an angry hiss. He rubbed his hand, chuckling again. "Seems only the owner can touch it."
Vivian felt the start of a throbbing headache hammering her mind, unaware of the anomaly emerging from her body because her eyes were shut tight to endure the pain.
The burn and discomfort of the symbols on her body worsened, amplified by whatever taboo and sinister concoction Soran convinced her to drink.
Her mind flashed with visages of a place buried deep in memories.
Memories that were not
her own.Vivian’s consciousness was thrust into a desolate land. She stood in the middle of a decaying wasteland in her wolf form, glancing around at the skeletal remains, the deathly stench in the air and the dull grey skies above.
Before her, an ancient skirmish unravelled. She watched a being, a figure created from the shadows itself with a hood over its head, rein in a white sabre-tooth tiger beast by the shackle around its neck.
It was an illusion of something that had already passed. Much like the chain extending from her chest in the present, the tiger beast bore the same chain, which was controlled by the shadowy figure.
Vivian observed the scene with a pained heart. She couldn’t ignore the pure anguish in the beast’s eyes as it fought for its freedom, but the dark symbols on the beast’s body, symbols resembling hers, flared to life.
The symbols restrained the tiger beast, forcing it to lower its head in submission.
Vivian sprinted forward, consumed by the illusion she believed was a part of her reality, and determined to set the tiger beast free from its misery.
However, the moment she reached the tiger beast to swipe her paw at the chains, the memory crumbled into dust from existence, and she was shoved back into her conscious mind in the present.
Vivian returned gasping for the sweet taste of air, followed by a coughing fit when her stomach wretched over and forced out a black liquid from her mouth. Her eyes shot open, reddened, and teary while she keeled over to throw up.
Her chest heaved with tightness, and she wiped her mouth with the back of her hand, trying to regain her senses.
"You’ve seen it," Soran said mirthlessly, gripping Vivian by her throat to tilt her head back. She snarled at him but was devoid of any strength to retaliate. "You’ve seen a memory of the Old World, haven’t you?"
Is that what it was? A memory of the Old World? Why would she have such memories?
Just what was in that brew... Vivian pondered, barely clinging to consciousness. What is he doing to me?
Vivian was in no coherent state to make sense of Soran’s actions or even respond to him. She could only pray fervently that the Wickan hadn’t completely lost his sanity and would release her soon.
"Do you know why the ’Era of Chains’ was named as such?" Soran probed, his grip on her throat tightening while his menacing blue eyes bore deeply into hers. "It was the era the Dhildari cult of dark Wickans invoked the Umbrafyre curse. Such a curse connected a chain to the shifters and beasts they controlled, like hounds with a leash. Thus, crowned as the ’Era of Chains’, truly fascinating, don’t you think?"
"Sick bastard..." Vivian managed to croak out with great strain, grabbing Soran’s wrist, where he gripped her throat suffocatingly. "You’re no different than Alaric."
"That’s quite harsh now, Miss Moonborn," Soran sighed dramatically, feigning a sense of hurt pride. "But I suppose you may have a valid point. He and I share a common goal, but for different reasons."
Before Vivian could respond, Soran cast a spell that forced her into slumber. A spell that would also alter her memories of whatever just occurred.
The ethereal chain dangling in the air retracted into her chest, and the dark glow of the symbols on her body faded.
"I just needed to confirm you had the Umbrafyre’s soul chain," Soran remarked, steadying Vivian’s body into his arms before she could collapse onto the floor. "Now that you have it, I simply need to find a way to bring it out completely and alter its ownership."
Surprisingly, his expression softened apologetically, almost as if he were anguished by his own ill-bearing actions.
"Oh, I’d never meant to hurt you," Soran spoke again, in a sotto tone this time. "But you must understand, Miss Moonborn. You are the key to reviving what has been lost. The key to opening up a path to the Old World once more."
When Soran had first discovered Vivian was cursed with Umbrafyre and who had cast it upon her, he’d immediately known the reasons for which Alaric had chosen her.
And after researching the history and lineage of Moonborn for several hours on end the previous night after trailing Vivian and Ronan, Soran was almost certain the she-wolf was what Wickans had been praying for. For centuries.
Vivian was no simple Moonborn Omega as she claimed to be.
There was more at hand.
Standing up with Vivian in his arms, Soran departed from the ritual chamber.
"Now, let’s get you back to your dear Lycan Alpha before I lose my head." The Wickan carried her out, giving her one final visual assessment to ensure there weren’t any traces of what he’d just committed.
