Cursed Lycan's Scarred Mate
Chapter 47: Crossing the first line

Chapter 47: Crossing the first line

"I know you may think that sounds foolish and wishful thinking on my part," Vivian remarked, her gaze lowered in shame for her declarations. "But I..."

What could she even do as a helpless and weak omega?

How could she, a dying shift, in any way, protect her Alpha?

She was useless to him.

Ronan frowned disapprovingly.

She was doing it again.

Undermining herself. And the Lycan Alpha was never fond of that ill-natured habit.

However, he didn’t wish to pretend he understood the depths of Vivian’s commitment to protecting him or in which way she intended to do so.

Switching their positions swiftly, Ronan loomed over Vivian and pinned both her wrists on either side of her. His amber eyes were searing in their intensity, eliciting an involuntary gasp from the she-wolf, who didn’t expect his sudden move.

"If I need protecting, then I’ve become pathetically weak," Ronan stated, his voice barely biting back a growl at his own weakness. "Lycan Alphas aren’t on the same standards as regular Alpha wolves. We stand at the pinnacle of everything, and we... we shouldn’t have weaknesses."

"And who decided that?" Vivian found the courage to ask. "Who decided that Lycan Alphas can’t have weaknesses as everyone else does? You’re all living beings like the rest of us, aren’t you? Every being has flaws and weaknesses, whether we choose them or not."

Utterly astounded.

Ronan couldn’t even refute Vivian’s rebuttal, even if he wanted to.

Who was it that set those ridiculously exalted standards for Lycan Alphas in the first place?

Perhaps the little wolf had been correct to some extent. However, Ronan still believed it was his undying duty never to become the face of vulnerability.

Yet he had failed to fulfil that duty now.

Never again.

Never again would he have a repeat of what happened with the MoonBind Draught.

Defeated, the Lycan Alpha pressed his forehead to Vivian’s, closing eyes for a few minutes.

"Too smart for your own good, little wolf," Ronan said, followed by a light-hearted but deep chuckle that sent sweet shivers down the she-wolf’s spine.

"Does that mean you agree with me?" She asked innocently.

How could he say no and break her heart?

"Maybe," Ronan answered, neither completely accepting nor disagreeing with her view. She was right in her own accord, but his stubborn pride as a Lycan Alpha demanded that he exceed all expectations. "You’ve made a valid point."

She grinned victoriously, and Ronan was yet again surprised to see such an expression from her.

She seemed much more comfortable with him now.

"As much as I like your determination to protect me," he started, moving closer to whisper into her ear, "I won’t allow you to put yourself in danger. And who said you would never become my Luna, hmm?"

Vivian’s ears flushed a scarlet read from the heat of his whispers and the proximity of his lips grazing over the shell of her ear teasingly.

"I...it just seemed like you didn’t want me," Vivian finally voiced her scepticism about the Lycan Alpha’s intentions towards her. "You usually avoid me or... tell me to keep away from your Lycan."

Ronan couldn’t deny that he was indeed culpable of such insolent behaviour. He didn’t understand why his stone heart was so vacillated between his desire for her and his agonising grudge against the Moonborn lineage for the heinous slaughters they committed against his clan in the past.

Vivian was not involved nor born at such a time, but didn’t he pledge to himself on the day of the massacre that he would eventually hunt down every Moonborn wolf and rip them apart?

Yet, ironically, fate ordained for him a mate of Moonborn blood.

I don’t know anymore. I can’t keep fighting back what I shouldn’t be fighting in the first place. Ronan mentally scolded himself.

That’s what I’ve been telling you. His Lycan half responded, answering to his distress.

Did you not tell me to use her to break the curse? How is that noble of you in any way? Ronan bit back, recalling his Lycan half’s words.

Foolish lad. The Lycan grinned at him in the spiritual mind space they shared. Whether you break the curse or not is of no consequence to me. I merely told you that so I could give you an excuse to accept her.

You sly bastard... Ronan growled back his Lycan. You’re satisfied with your victory now, aren’t you? I’ll have you know I’m still not letting you get close to her.

With those last words, Ronan severed the connection with his Lycan half temporarily.

"I was not being true to myself, Vivian." Ronan admitted. "Truthfully, I don’t understand anything of this true mate bond, although I was the one to bring it to light on our first meeting. I realise more that I truly have no direction in what I’m supposed to do. But what I do know is that you are mine."

He all but growled out his last words, pulling back slightly to meet Vivian’s gaze.

"You are mine, sweetheart," Ronan repeated, unsure of what that even meant. "It’s only been a few days, and there are still doubts, mistrust, and uncertainty between us, but I will not deny that you belong to me."

Vivian would be deceiving herself if she denied that she loved every bit of possessiveness oozing from Ronan’s words. His revelation undoubtedly brought red warmth to her cheeks, and perhaps she too didn’t know what the future held for them, but she didn’t detest the idea of belonging to him.

There was still much the two of them needed to explore about each other, but the first line had been crossed.

"Then, no more pushing me away?" Vivian smiled warmly. She despised Alphas, but Ronan was different. She wanted to give their bond a chance.

However, it was not so simple and easy.

She reminded herself she couldn’t allow her heart to be swayed and immersed in any feelings for Ronan.

Avery was her main and top priority.

And Ronan was a means to an extent to saving her niece from a terrible fate.

As per Alaric’s orders, all she had to do was investigate the Wolfsbane clan’s susceptibilities and report them to him.

And for that, she needed to get closer to Ronan.
