Chapter 45: 45: Oil to Fire 2

"We really did feed him to the crown prince, your grace. We swear it. You know we’d never ever disobey your command." The second one breathed out this time as he fell on his knees. The grand king was still angry, but at least his jaw wasn’t being clenched so tightly anymore.

"I think we should ask him for an explanation then." The first messenger announced, then all attention was on me in the next moment. I instantly stiffened, heart lurching into my throat as I blinked at the three of them.

"Care to explain? How are you still alive? And if you dare lie, consider yourself dead." The grand king spoke this time and I flinched at the last part of his sentence, feeling my heart growing heavy and slowing down, and I was more scared right now because I knew he wasn’t bluffing.

"I- I don’t know how I survived." I revealed and the three men regarded me like I had suddenly gone stupid.

"Are you really trying to test my patience?" The grand king thundered and I flinched, while feeling fear grow thicker within me.

"Tell me what I wanna hear right now before my patience runs thin!" He ordered again and I fidgeted while wondering what it is that he actually wanted me to say, aside from the truth. I already told him the truth but it doesn’t seem like he believed that.

"I really don’t know, I swear. I passed out in the cage and when I woke up, the beast was gone and I was alone."

This time, the grand king had a weird expression on as he regarded me closely. Shocked looks could be seen on the messengers’ faces as they gaped at me.

"Did the prince harm you while you were unconscious?" He asked, voice unrecognizable but slower this time and I shook my head.

"No, he didn’t."

The grand king leaned forward and began to stroke his breads this time, while his eyes didn’t move from my face for a second.

"That’s definitely strange because it has never happened before, to be frank." The grand king continued and I stiffened again as he continued.

"Which clearly means there has to be more to this." The grand king announced before leaning back again.

"Aren’t you the one that drank poison on behalf of the crown prince three days ago? Who I heard the prince got territorial over?" He asked and my heart pounded away as I gave a timid nod in response.

"Is the prince smitten with this boy, your grace?" One of the messengers asked and the king hummed again, his eyes never leaving me for a second.

"The prince never gets smitten with anyone, he hates people too much to do something like that." The grand king paused for a moment before pointing a hand at me.

"However, there’s definitely something unusual going on. Since the prince didn’t kill you when in his beast form, does this mean he recognized you when he’s in his human form? Is he treating you nice because he remembers you from there?" The grand king continued.

"I- I don’t know..." I began but the grand n king cut me off sharply.

"Silence!"

"My grandson has never shown any interest in anyone before, not even an eager flicker of lust at least. He just never cares. He refused to reveal who the kid that took that poison for him is, and somehow, that same kid is the one that survived being killed by the Prince’s mindless beast. Isn’t it clear enough?" The king was referring to the two messengers this time and they both looked confused as they refused to outrightly respond.

"I’ve decide that I won’t kill this boy anymore like I fully intended to when I ordered him to come with me,"

The king suddenly said and my eyes widened, my heart falling right into my stomach.

He planned to kill me when he made me come with him here?

Holy shit.

"Instead of killing you, I’ll just use you to test a theory or two out." He continued and I stiffened as horror washed over me.

Oh gods.

Not again.

Not when I’m still being used by the Prince’s butler and his guards.

"I’ll use him in monitoring my grandson, and he’ll give me daily reports about him. I have a feeling that curse of his is starting to get broken. That’s the only thing that can explain this complicated situation."

He rose to his feet this time and pocketed his hands before speaking. "And, it could also mean that the prince has come across his fated mate." His mouth was in a thin line this time and the look he gave me was scalding before he faced the messengers.

"Is that a good or a bad thing, your grace?" The second messenger asked the grand king whose lips curled up in clear displeasure as he threw one more scalding look my way before responding.

"Absolutely not, it isn’t. If it ends up being the latter, it would have to be nipped in the bud before it even gets the chance to become anything meaningful."

My eyes widened as fear swamped my insides at once. What does he mean by all that he was asking?

Something about fated mates...?

What the fuck does that even mean?

"Of course, your grace." One of the messengers said while the other one nodded in agreement. "Whatever you need us to do, you only need to say the word and your wish is our command."

They both bowed after speaking and I almost let out a scoff. If I remember clearly, they didn’t even like this man and saw him as an old drunk. Saying that right now would undoubtedly only make matters worse for me.

"So, is he just gonna be allowed to leave?" One of the messengers asked this time and the grand king nodded

"Yes. But I’ll be sending for him very frequently for him to report to me." His eyes locked with mine as he continued. "And If a single detail is left out, you might really lose your head this time."
