Chapter 78: When did anyone get pregnant? (Annabelle)

As I stormed out of the pack house, Gaius followed me, along with some warriors, but he mindlinked them to retreat. It would have been a shame for them to witness their Alpha in the same state I was in when I was banished.

Upon reaching the brazen bull, I opened it with Gaius’s assistance, and a wave of despair washed over me. He was in a worse condition than I had ever been when I was imprisoned inside it.

The fire was dwindling, yet the bronze beast retained its scorching heat, requiring Gaius to remove his shirt to access it.

It was my fault. In that moment, I had wished for his demise, but now I realize the gravity of my mistake.

I couldn’t bear the thought of living without him, for my love for him was profound. The hatred I once harbored was merely unrequited love, and any harsh action now would only exacerbate his already seared skin.

We had to handle him with extreme care to prevent further injury, as his skin was severely burnt, all due to my actions. The pain had numbed him into unconsciousness, sparing him from the agony.

"Zion is fine," Gaius informed me. I realized it was the moment when I stopped feeling the pain through the mate bond. For some reason, I don’t regret marking him because it allowed me to share his pain. I went through it, so what?

He wasn’t in his right mind, and if I had known a spell was affecting him, I would have handled things differently.

Instead of resisting, I should have kissed him to break the spell. Little did I know he was the Alpha destined to save me from my misery.

How could I have underestimated the impact of my words on him? Thankfully, Gaius instructed the warriors to prevent anyone from following us, or the tribe members would have resented me.

"Thank you, Gaius," I expressed as we reached the healers’ residence. The shock in their eyes upon seeing their Alpha in such a state made me wish I could disappear.

"What happened to our Alpha?" one of them asked. Gaius replied, "You can see he suffered burns and has shut out his wolf. If the Alpha dies, we all die," he threatened.

They didn’t ask any more questions and began to hasten to gather the herbs.

Hours passed before they were done with the herbs and bandages, but I couldn’t leave his side. "Anna, the tribe is in your hands now," Gaius reminded me, but I couldn’t focus on anything else except the man in front of me.

"Take care of the tribe, Gaius. I’m not moving an inch until he wakes up."

"Is it even allowed for you to be here?" one of the healers asked. Gaius glared at him. "She’s the Alpha’s mate."

He didn’t seem to believe it and challenged, "Beta Gaius, just because she dyed her hair doesn’t mean she is."

"I’m surprised you haven’t heard about what happened to Kari. She’s the one who dyed her hair, and Anna’s hair is natural. She’s been wearing a wig for most of her life, but none of that matters now. Even the Alpha tried to take his own life because of what he did to her, so who are you to question her?"

His words seemed to settle everything, and I knew his patience in explaining was out of respect for these old healers.

Gaius left after the brief exchange, and none of the healers dared to question me further. For three days, the healers said there was nothing more to do. Zach was still out of reach, but Zion had improved.

I had forgotten about their special bond when I made the request, and Zeke was uncontrollable. If Zach dies, it will be on me, and I will never forgive myself.

It’s a good thing spells are abolished because they can really destroy good things. When Zach finally regained consciousness, I was stunned by where his attention was.

He even noticed that I had lost weight because I couldn’t bring myself to eat or drink. Without hesitation, I kissed him passionately, feeling his pain through the bond, but he only asked about my well-being, bringing tears to my eyes.

"Yes, Zach, I forgive you. Let’s not fight again, okay?" It’s better to have him here and alive than to lose him due to unforgiveness and hate. After all, he was different now and more useful to me alive than dead. "Are you sure?" he groaned from pain, as he tried to sit up and free himself from the bandages.

"Alpha, you are badly injured, and it will take at least a month for us to remove those bandages," the eldest healer advised, but Zach was too stubborn.

"Take it off. I want to hold my mate and pup. Besides, I blocked my wolf." As he spoke, he seemed to unblock his wolf because the pain I felt through the bond was quickly receding.

The healers were reluctant, but as they began to slowly remove the bandage and saw his fast healing, they hastened the process.

"You know the elixir you got me from the witch twelve years ago is still in effect, right?"

Indeed, the elixir aids in healing as well, so if he hadn’t blocked his wolf, he could have survived the brazen bull for hours. "I never got the chance to thank you, but please let me make it up to you," he said in a pleading tone, amazing everyone with his vulnerability.

"The omega is the one who saved the Alpha?" one of the healers asked. Though no one responded to him, he began to see me differently.

"We are going to have her Luna coronation next week," Zach declared, but I shook my head. Until I find my mother, I don’t want to be coronated.

"Zach, please be patient. There is a lot to be done."

The sound of a scream interrupted us just as Zach was about to refuse. The healers rushed out of the room, but we could hear them talking. "She’s in labor. The Alpha must not hear this."

Zach’s expression changed as he murmured, "Labor? How is that possible? When did anyone get pregnant?"
