Chapter 75: No turning back (Alpha Zach)

As much as I wanted to confront Kari and learn about Iris, my mate was my priority. After giving her beet juice to help her recover, she seemed better but a bit dizzy.

I assumed it was due to her experiencing her vampire instincts for the first time, which left her feeling weak. Surprisingly, she wasn’t eager to seek revenge on her enemy but instead focused on taking care of herself.

Unbeknownst to me, she had other plans in store. Upon entering the packhouse and being greeted by the staff, she hurried to the kitchen, and I followed her.

"What do you need? Are you hungry? I can prepare something for you," I offered in a soothing tone, but she remained visibly irritated, likely due to my actions while under a spell.

If I had been in my right mind, I would never have made that decision against her. But the truth is, I had lost my mind by then, and her forgiveness was not something I could easily obtain.

"You know what, I prefer the arrogant you, so stop pretending around me," she said coldly, leaving me speechless.

"I think you should rest more. I will find out from Zion what you like and make it for you."

Despite my envy of Zion for knowing my mate better than me, I had to acknowledge that without him, my mate would have suffered even worse consequences, or I might have lost her altogether.

Therefore, I owed him a lot for all he had done for her. "No, I just want you to know that I’m leaving and will not stay another day in this tribe after dealing with Kari," she mentioned, causing my heart to sink.

If only she would give me the chance, I would make it up to her, but no. She was so desperate to leave me, and I could understand why.

After much deliberation, I felt that the least I could do was grant her wish of rejection since the pain from her hurt was too much for her to bear.

If accepting her rejection would make her feel better, then who was I to hold her back? However, just before I agreed, Gaius stepped in and reminded me of something I had long forgotten.

The rules regarding spells were outlined in the werewolf constitution, which is why witches, Lycans, and vampires were all prohibited. Some adjustments would need to be made due to my mate being a chimera, but with her inability to forgive me, things were just complicated.

"Alpha, may I have a copy of the werewolf constitution?" It took me a moment to realize that the question was directed at me, given her use of my title.

"If you address me without my title, I can provide it," I replied with a gentle smile. She let out a frustrated sigh.

"Well, it doesn’t make a difference to me to call you by your first name, so Zach, where is the constitution?"

I almost wondered why she didn’t already have it, then remembered what her mother had told me about their separation when she was eight. She must have endured so much all these years, even living in this tribe for over a month without my knowledge.

She was an omega, subjected to their harsh way of life, and then set up by an imposter to die. What’s worse, I had unknowingly endorsed it. I felt like I didn’t deserve to live if it was all my fault, but it wasn’t.

I had been manipulated into believing that my mate was the real enemy, while the true culprits reveled in our suffering. "Let’s go to my office. I’ll show you," I said, and Gaius smiled as I led Belle to my office.

Upon reaching there, I understood why. On the blank wall of my office hung the painting of the red-haired woman captured on camera, the one we had been searching for all this time.

Gaius had arranged this, and my heart filled with gratitude. The once cold office now exuded warmth because of the painting.

Even Belle appeared amazed as I retrieved the constitution from the shelves and turned to page fifteen.

"Here you go," I interrupted her. She briefly glanced at me before focusing on the document in front of her. Leaning in, she began to read the text, each line causing her eyes to narrow.

"Anyone who betrays their mate shall accept rejection if the other desires it. If the mistake of either spouse is due to a curse, spell, or hex, forgiveness is required as the victim has no control over their actions."

A tear fell from her eyes, causing my heart to ache. "I’m sorry," I said, but she shook her head. "It hurts, don’t you understand?"

Taking her hand gently, I reassured her, "I know it hurts, and if you give me the chance, I will ease the pain."

"What if I refuse? What if I insist on rejection? I’m a chimera after all."

I flipped through the pages and found the passage on page 16. "In a situation where a mate refuses to forgive the other due to a curse or spell, they shall be rejected but banned from the werewolf community. If they have a pup, the pup stays with the tribe and is cared for by the packhouse."

"I can’t leave my pup. It’s not fair," she said bitterly. I knew how to make it right and asked, "If I endure thirty minutes of the brazen bull torture, will that be enough for you?"

Shock filled her eyes as she stared at me. "Just thirty minutes? I thought you would say you want to die in there." Her pain was so intense that she wished for my death, despite the bond we shared. "In that case, I am willing to grant your wish, but first, I have a favor to ask."

The frost in her eyes thawed as she considered my proposal. "If you agree to meet your end in the brazen bull, then I will do anything," she said solemnly. I smiled at her.

"Are you certain? Once we agree, there is no turning back."
