Chapter 69: Kari is back (Alpha Zach)
My mate is the most beautiful she-wolf I have ever seen, but I felt there was more to her, as my wolf kept saying. I never thought my twin brother was one of them.
I couldn’t remember some things, and confusion clouded my mind most times. However, I didn’t want Zion to come along with us.
Despite my reluctance, I couldn’t refuse my mate’s wishes. The coldness in her eyes was unsettling, and I was eager to understand how I had caused her pain, as our pup suggested.
Everything changed when I received a telegram from Gaius: "Kari is back with a pup she claims is yours. He looks exactly like Reid."
If he hadn’t added the last part, I might have thought my mate was upset because I cheated on her, but that didn’t seem to be the case.
I was still trying to remember who this she-wolf was that had Gaius so excited, and unintentionally spoke aloud. "Kari, who is she?" I was typing a message on Telegram when everyone around the dining table suddenly fixed their gazes on me.
My mate, in particular, looked pained. "You don’t remember her too?" she asked sarcastically. I tried to piece together some memories.
During my long search for my mate after she saved my life years ago, we had encountered Kari, who mentioned her name. So why was my mate now called Bella?
"Is she the reason you’re so cold to me?" My question was sincere, but Bella’s bitter smile made me feel like it was even worse than that.
"She told you that I drugged her, and you believed her. She also accused me of murdering your sister Iris, and you believed her again. You..." She choked back tears, her face still dry.
My heart clenched as I sensed a profound revelation. I quickly messaged Gaius, ’Who is Kari? I only recall finding her as my mate, but I have no memory after drinking the wine. The mention of her brings bitterness to my mate.’
Gaius responded, ’Zach, I have all the information you need about her, but you must prepare yourself. Losing your memory may have its consequences, but the priority is to reunite you with your mate and pup.’
When did Gaius and I become so close that he addressed me by my first name? The strange part was that I liked it. It felt like we were best friends, something I had never experienced before.
"Bella, I don’t understand why Kari’s name upsets you, but the girl who saved me was kind. She would never do the things you accused me of. Please give me a chance to make it right," I pleaded, but she choked on tears and ran to the restroom with Zion following her.
My heart ached with a strange pain as my wolf whispered, ’I’m sorry I can’t help. I don’t remember much either, but I sense her pain from betrayal.’
It does make sense, but how did she become so close to Zion? Seizing the opportunity in their absence, I asked Zion’s mate, Elisa, "Are they always this close?"
Her eyebrows raised in astonishment. "Alpha Zach, Z, sees her as a sister, although they did fall in love with each other at certain points. However, there is currently nothing between them. Z only feels that your family owes Bella so much because after she saved your life, you got engaged to Kari and condemned her to die by the brazen bull."
"Impossible," I interjected, feeling ashamed that my pup was hearing all this. I love my mate, and from the moment she saved my life, I swore to put her first and give her everything. "I don’t believe you. I will speak to Gaius and ask that those who say such things around my two-year-old pup please stop," I stated firmly, my brows furrowed.
"Two-year-old? That pup is only four months old," she corrected me. This revelation widened my eyes, leaving me bewildered by the situation.
"What are you talking about?" I demanded, but Zeke chimed in, "She’s right. I’m only four months old, but I’m very smart. Dad, what are we going to do about mom?" he inquired, leaving me speechless.
However, I couldn’t bear the wait any longer and excused myself from the table. "Zeke, please allow me to check on her," I said softly, and he nodded eagerly. "You should."
As I neared the restroom, I could hear their voices. "Bella, he’s my twin brother, and you can direct your anger towards me. His sins are unforgivable, but who can fight against a spell?"
"What if I had died?" My mate asked, and an excruciating pain pierced my heart as she continued to speak. "Yes, he hated me so much that even after the appearance of the crimson moon, he still wanted me dead. He marked me to track and kill me."
I couldn’t believe that I had done all that. How evil could I be? "Even here, have you forgotten how he ripped my womb and wanted to take Zeke’s life because he thought it was yours? He never believed it when you told him that I saved him and that this pup was his, wanting me dead, and now you want me to just let it go?"
My knees felt weak, but Zion’s words were the most shocking. "I owe him this position because the night before the battle, I sent she-wolves to his room to trigger his allergy. For that alone, let me bear his sins, Bella. I’m begging you to give him a chance."
When did Zion start caring for me like this? We had hated each other before, but now I realized I had misjudged our relationship.
"I want to go back and confront Kari. She needs to be held accountable, and I still need to prove my innocence in Iris’s death. That’s the only reason I’m returning."
I knew that no words from me could comfort her at this point, so I returned to my seat, feeling completely deflated and empty.
When they came back, Bella was leaning against Zion’s chest, and Zion had his arms wrapped around her. I no longer felt the bubbling jealousy, only the pain of my own mistakes.
"Madai, the tribe is in your hands," Zion said, adding, "I won’t return until everything at the Crimson Moon tribe is taken care of."
Beta Madai, who had been quiet throughout, nodded as the maids descended the stairs with some luggage. After embracing her close friends, Apphia and Elisa, we set off at sunset.
We were barely halfway through the journey when we noticed a dark shadow in the middle of the road. Zion stopped the car at the driver’s seat, but I got down first. "Let me handle this."
To my surprise, Bella joined me. "I won’t let you be the hero." A heaviness settled in my chest. Why did she have to turn everything into a competition when all I wanted was to make it up to her?
