Chapter 61: No need to lie anymore (Beta Gaius)

Months ago, Alpha Zach thoroughly interrogated Jack about his relationship with Anna. After the last question, I began to wonder how Jack would feel if Anna returned to the tribe and possibly became its Luna.

We Lycans are known for our strong zeal for revenge, especially when betrayed by those we trust the most.

"That’s all for today, but one last thing. Can you share any other observations you made about her? Did she ever mention her family?" Alpha Zach asked, and I noticed Jack’s expression change.

"When she was assigned to me as her supervisor, I did ask her those questions. I remember her telling me that she never knew her father and had been separated from her mother since she was eight," he revealed. Alpha Zach looked conflicted as Jack continued to speak.

"She also mentioned that she was searching for her parents, which was the reason she accepted to attend the engagement banquet. "Miss Kari promised her a lot of money, but in the end, Anna was banished with nothing," he said sadly.

I didn’t know what was going on with Alpha Zach, but his countenance was remorseful. "You can go," he finally dismissed Jack before turning his attention to me.

"Have you heard about Kari?" He looked upset when he mentioned her name, and I gave him a breakdown of what I had heard.

"Jethro informed me that Kari tried to escape twice but was apprehended each time." A look of satisfaction settled on his face, followed by a small smile. "She will pay for everything she has done. I will make sure of it."

As we were talking, we heard a knock on the door. "Come in," Alpha Zach said. One of the scribes walked in with a telegram from Jethro, the beta of the Umbra Kin Tribe.

He is the one I secretly entrusted with Kari, and the information broke me. "Escaped?" Alpha Zach roared after reading the message, but I was strangely calm.

Kari had nowhere to go if she was indeed what I suspected her to be. Alpha Zach suddenly calmed down and asked me, "What about those in charge of keeping eyes on her? If she escaped, then they should know where she’s gone."

He was right, and I cursed myself internally for having forgotten about that part. So I mindlinked the spies who informed me, ’Kari escaped, but we didn’t stop her because we wanted to know her accomplices as the Alpha mentioned.’

A relief sigh escaped me as I asked them, ’So what did you find out?’

’Beta Gaius, Kari went to the coven. Do you think she possesses dark powers too?’ The secret was known only to me, and I didn’t expect the spy to suspect it as well. However, since he did, I couldn’t keep him in the dark any longer.

’That’s how it appears, but continue to monitor them and remember to use the protection I provided,’ I advised.

There were special herbs that could make a person resistant to charms, but they didn’t seem to work on Alpha Zach. It could be because they had tampered with his flavors.

"Alpha, she went to the coven," I informed after ending the mindlink. Alpha Zach remained unusually quiet.

A week later, the pack came under attack during the night when most warriors were asleep. I discreetly handled the situation with my Lycan, ensuring that none of the attackers survived.

There were fifteen rogues, which posed no challenge to me. The following day, we heard news that the Werewolf Academy had closed down due to a pandemic and the only way to keep safe was to remain in one’s tribal walls.

Our farms were expanding, but the tribe members were not increasing due to the issue of stillbirths that we couldn’t solve. She-wolves were prohibited from getting pregnant, leading to a high demand for herbs that prevent conception.

Whenever a tribe member, whether rogue or full member, died, even from natural causes, there was great mourning as we only experienced reductions in our numbers.

One day, after supervising the farms, I was forcefully taken to the center of the omega’s arena by a couple of warriors.

"What’s happening? Have you forgotten my position?" I questioned, never having used my strength against any warrior or tribe member, finding their actions unacceptable.

"Shut up, Beta Gaius," the new gamma, Hart, retorted. I was taken aback but managed to break free from their hold.

"You have no right to lay hands on me," I stated coldly, surprised by his behavior. However, he smirked triumphantly. "You should watch your behavior because today, you will meet your death."

Confusion enveloped me as he and four warriors grabbed me once again. Just as I was about to shake them off, I caught Alpha Zach’s cold gaze, a look he reserved for criminals, and my heart sank.

I was thrust in front of him, and Alpha Zach appeared betrayed and ready to strike. The last time I had seen him like this was during Anna’s banishment.

Something felt amiss as our eyes locked; he averted his gaze, but I followed it until I spotted the strangers.

"I’ve witnessed his wolf myself."

"Alpha, he deceived you," one of them interjected. I had no clue who they were, but Alpha Zach’s stare was unwavering, and this time, I knew I couldn’t conceal it.

The question came quicker than I had anticipated. "Are you a protective wolf? A Lycan?"

"Alpha Zach, what matters is that I have served you wholeheartedly," I pleaded desperately, but anger blazed in his eyes as he squatted down in front of me.

"Tell me, did you save Annabelle back then?" How could I deny it? My head nodded. "Yes, I did."

’You shouldn’t have admitted it,’ my Lycan said, but I didn’t agree with him. ’No need to lie anymore. We’ve been caught.’

The pain in his eyes hurt me more than the kick that sent me flying through the air. I landed on my back, and his foot pressed into my stomach.

"What did you hope to achieve by lying to me all these years?"

About to respond, I noticed a smirk on the lips of one of the two strangers and challenged him. "Alpha, I have served you all my life, and yet you choose to side with strangers over me?"

"I will believe you if you deny their accusation," he said, his expression stern, but it was too late to hide it. "I am who I am, Alpha, I can’t change that."

Pain reflected in his eyes as he roared, "Send him to the dungeon."

I didn’t resist, but as I was being led away, I heard one of the strangers say, "Alpha, if you need an honest beta..." He didn’t finish speaking, but Alpha Zach’s response brought hope to my heart.
