Chapter 46: Last mistake

Chapter 46: Last mistake

"Tsk, they killed my bear so easily," the summoner spat, his concentration broken.

Mitch seized the initiative, hurling a concentrated mana ball toward the nearest archer.

The magical projectile blazed through the air with devastating power, far more than most tier-two mages could muster.

The archer’s eyes widened in shock; they didn’t expect a mage.

Most mages carried staves and traveled in larger groups for protection. This sword-wielding duo had caught them completely unprepared.

The experienced shield-bearer’s instincts saved his companion’s life.

With reflexes honed by years of combat, he threw himself between the archer and the incoming spell, his face grim with the realization of what they faced.

The mana ball’s power made his blood run cold. No ordinary tier-two mage could generate such devastating force.

He frantically activated a defensive trinket, and a wall of solid earth erupted from the ground just in time to absorb the blast.

But Mitch was relentless. A second mana ball followed immediately, giving their enemies no respite.

The archer managed to loose an arrow enhanced with wind magic, hoping to disperse the spell, but even though it weakened the attack slightly, the remaining force still slammed into the shield-bearer’s defense, sending him skidding backward several meters.

The remaining three attackers pressed their assault.

The second archer sent a barrage of fire-enchanted arrows streaking toward them while the summoner conjured a wind-shielded eagle that dove toward their flanks.

The swordsman charged directly at them, his blade wreathed in flames.

Leya met the swordsman’s charge head-on, her new shield absorbing the impact of his fiery blade.

She could feel the heat washing over her, but her superior speed and strength quickly became apparent. With a powerful deflection, she knocked his sword aside and activated her bracelet.

A massive root erupted from the earth, its gnarled surface seeking to impale the swordsman’s leg. He twisted away at the last second, the root barely missing him as he launched another attack.

Their blades met in a shower of sparks, fire meeting ice as Leya parried with both shield and sword.

Finding an opening, she thrust forward, her blade biting deep into his shoulder. Frost spread from the wound like a living thing, encasing his entire arm in ice.

The swordsman stumbled backward, his face contorted with pain and shock at the sudden numbness in his limb.

An arrow whistled toward Leya from behind. She summoned another root to intercept it.

The summoner’s eagle slipped past her defenses, its talons raking across her lower back. The wind shield around the creature absorbed most of the impact, but the attack still drew blood.

Leya spun with lethal grace, her sword carving through the air.

The eagle’s wind shield offered little protection against her newfound strength and superior weapon.

Her blade cleaved the creature in two, sending feathers and blood spraying across the forest floor.

The archer continued his barrage, but Leya advanced relentlessly, using her shield to deflect what she couldn’t dodge.

The wounded swordsman, his arm still encased in ice, chose discretion over valor and fled into the deeper woods.

When Leya reached the archer, terror was written across his face. This wasn’t the easy ambush they had planned. This woman was a force of nature.

Her sword swept through his bow like it was made of paper before finding his throat. Ice spread from the wound, and within seconds, his head was encased in a crystalline tomb.

The summoner, now bereft of his creatures, raised a desperate wind shield and drew a knife with trembling hands.

But Leya’s assault was inexorable. Her blade carved through his magical defenses in three precise strikes before opening his throat.

Meanwhile, Mitch found himself in a deadly exchange with the remaining archer and the shield-bearer.

His mana balls met a constant barrage of arrows, neither side able to gain a decisive advantage.

When the shield-bearer finally closed to melee range, the older warrior pointed his hand directly at Mitch.

An ice lance materialized in the air, its crystalline point gleaming with lethal intent. Mitch threw up his mana shield, his bracelet was still on cooldown, so she made use of his own spell which was way weaker than the bracelet mana shield.

The ice lance struck with tremendous force, shattering his hastily erected barrier and piercing deep into his abdomen.

"UGH!"

Mitch dropped to one knee with a strangled cry, warm blood seeping between his fingers.

Leya, having just dispatched the summoner, spun around to see Mitch wounded and vulnerable. An arrow was already in flight toward his head.

Without hesitation, she activated her bracelet’s final root, the massive growth bursting from the earth to shield Mitch from the incoming projectile.

She sprinted toward the last archer, her boots pounding against the forest floor.

The man managed to put an arrow in her shoulder, but the wound barely slowed her approach.

She was death incarnate, and nothing would stop her from reaching him.

As she closed the final distance, a pillar of fire erupted between them, the archer’s desperate final gambit.

The flames seared half her side, but her momentum was unstoppable. Through the blazing column, she hurled her ice-enchanted sword with deadly accuracy.

When the fire dissipated, the archer lay pinned to the ground, her blade buried to the hilt in his skull. Ice crystals spread from the wound like a grotesque crown.

She wrenched her weapon free with a wet, cracking sound, blood and frozen brain matter splattering the ground.

The shield-bearer had reached Mitch and was pressing his advantage, his blade seeking vital organs while Mitch desperately maintained his mana shield. Each impact drained more of his dwindling magical reserves.

Leya attacked from behind, but the experienced warrior’s instincts served him well. He spun and lashed out, his blade opening a deep gash in her arm and sending her sprawling to the blood-soaked earth.

Blood and gore flew everywhere, but not from Leya, who were just about to be killed but from the shield bearer.

It was the last mistake he would ever make. He turned his back on the strongest awakener between the two.

Mitch poured every last drop of his remaining mana into a final spell.

The mana ball that formed was smaller than his previous attacks, but it was concentrated, refined, and absolutely lethal. It struck the shield-bearer’s head and detonated.

The explosion painted the surrounding trees with gore, and silence finally fell over the blood-soaked clearing.
