Chapter 42: Diamond is unbreakable
Chapter 42: Diamond is unbreakable
The stag lowered its magnificent head in what was unmistakably a bow of acknowledgment, a gesture of respect from a being of immense power to those who had shown kindness to its young.
Then the air around both deer began to shimmer as countless leaves materialized from nothing, swirling in tightening spirals around the family.
More and more foliage appeared until they were completely obscured in a whirlwind of green leaves.
When the leaves finally scattered on an unfelt breeze, the stag and its offspring had vanished completely, leaving only a patch of unnaturally perfect grass where they had stood.
"What... what was that?" Leya’s voice cracked with residual terror, her legs still trembling from the encounter.
"I don’t know," Mitch admitted, though his mind was already turning to his Divine Luck achievement.
"Should... should we check inside?" His own voice carried the shakiness of someone whose adrenaline was still flooding his system, but curiosity was already warring with caution.
The passage the stag had created led to a small chamber that felt almost mundane after their supernatural encounter.
Rough wooden planks formed walls around a simple but cozy space. A bed with clean linens occupied one corner, while a basic wooden table and chair suggested someone had once used this as a retreat or hideaway.
But their attention was immediately drawn to the far wall, where a chest unlike any they had ever seen waited for them.
"Is that...?" Leya’s voice trailed off in wonder.
"Diamond," Mitch confirmed, his own voice hushed with awe.
The chest was carved from a single, massive diamond, its faceted surface catching and reflecting the chamber’s modest light into prismatic rainbows that danced across the walls.
Even closed, it radiated an aura of incredible value and magical potency.
"Open it!" Leya practically shouted, her eyes wide with the kind of desire that only truly legendary treasure could inspire. "Open it right now!"
Mitch needed no encouragement. His hands shook slightly as he approached the chest, not from fear, but from anticipation.
The lid was heavier than expected, requiring both hands to lift, and the moment it cracked open, brilliant light flooded the chamber.
When their vision cleared, two objects lay nestled in the chest’s velvet-lined interior.
[2 x Miraculous Strength Apple ★ – An apple that grew from a tree that basked in pure divine energy for centuries. Its taste transcends mortal understanding. Permanently increases Body stat by 5 points. This miraculous effect can only be experienced once per individual.]
"Oh my god," Mitch breathed, hardly daring to believe what he was reading. "Leya, do you understand what these are?"
He handed her one of the apples, and she held it as if it might dissolve at any moment. The fruit was perfect in every way, its skin a deep red that seemed to glow from within, its weight substantial and satisfying in the palm.
"Quick, eat yours," Mitch urged, biting into his own apple as if it could get away from his hands at any moment.
The taste was indescribable, not just flavor, but an experience. It was as if every perfect apple that had ever existed had contributed its essence to this single bite.
Sweetness and something indefinably divine flooded his senses, and he felt the fruit’s magic flowing through his body like liquid fire.
[Your Body stat has increased by 5!]
The transformation was immediate and dramatic. Mitch felt his muscles solidify and expand beneath his skin, his reflexes sharpening, his overall physical presence becoming more substantial.
He could sense the increased density of his bones, the enhanced efficiency of his cardiovascular system, and the way his body now moved faster.
"That’s incredible!" Leya exclaimed, her own transformation equally visible. She flexed her fingers experimentally, marveling at the newfound strength flowing through her frame.
"I’ve heard legends of items like this," she continued, wonder coloring every word. "Artifacts spoken of only in whispers among the continent’s most powerful individuals. They’re the stuff of myths, treasures that factions would go to war over." Her smile could have illuminated the chamber on its own. "I never imagined there would come a day when I would experience something so precious!"
Mitch nodded, still processing the magnitude of their fortune. "It’s tragic that the diamond chest will dissolve back into pure mana," he observed, running his hand along its flawless surface. "
A container this magnificent should be preserved, but dungeon magic won’t allow it to exist outside these walls."
They spent considerable time examining every inch of the chamber, their enhanced physical capabilities making the search more thorough than ever before.
They knocked methodically on walls listening for hollow spaces, examined floorboards for loose sections, and even checked the ceiling for hidden compartments.
The furniture, while well-crafted for its purpose, was made from ordinary wood, serviceable but holding no magical properties or hidden value.
Despite their exhaustive investigation, the chamber yielded no additional secrets.
They concluded their day by returning to the main chamber and continuing their systematic elimination of the remaining monsters. By evening, only a third of the original population remained.
Leya had taken to jokingly asking Mitch from time to time whether he’d spotted any injured deer, but beneath the humor lay genuine hope.
Even as a jest, her words prompted Mitch to extend his mana senses, checking throughout every cleared section of the chamber, scanning for any presence they might have overlooked.
The miraculous loot they had discovered was simply too extraordinary to risk missing similar opportunities through carelessness.
If his Divine Luck achievement was truly guiding them toward such incredible rewards, he was determined to be worthy of its guidance.
After a day of culling monsters, they went back to camp.
Mitch chose to see what his stats looked like.
