Chapter 70: What’s the point of loving someone if you’re not going to fight or speak up for them

Haeun glanced at himself in the mirror one last time, smoothing out the loose black sleeveless sweater vest over his short-sleeved white shirt. He’d paired it with white socks and black sneakers, aiming for a casual yet put-together look. Just as he finished, he heard Yeongsoo step into the room.

Yeongsoo looked almost unrecognizable. He was wearing a beige sleeveless sweater vest over an oversized white button-up shirt that extended just a bit past his waist, matched with straight beige trousers and clean white sneakers. The change from his usual style was striking, and Haeun couldn’t help but admire the result.

"Wow," Haeun said with a grin, trying to contain his excitement. "You actually wore it."

Yeongsoo glanced down at himself, tugging at the hem of the vest with a slight smile. "You insisted, didn’t you?"

Haeun chuckled. "And it looks good on you. I told you a change would suit you."

Yeongsoo stepped closer, letting his eyes wander over Haeun’s outfit. "If I’d known youd like me dressing like this, I wouldn’t have done so earlier on, maybe you would have liked me more."

A soft blush crept onto Haeun’s cheeks. "Stop saying stuff like that," he mumbled, giving him a slap on the shoulder. "Let’s just go."

As they settled into the car, Haeun buckled his seatbelt, stealing glances at Yeongsoo as he started the engine. The soft hum of the car filled the air as they pulled onto the road, each of them quietly absorbing the anticipation of their first date.

Haeun couldn’t resist a small smile as he looked out the window. "I still can’t believe you agreed to a rom-com over the horror movie."

Yeongsoo chuckled, giving him a sidelong glance. "I told you, it’s your choice today. Besides, I’m a little curious to see you laugh genuinely."

Haeun’s cheeks warmed at the comment. "I don’t usually laugh out loud during movies. I...uh, smile."

"Well, then I’ll be watching closely to catch it."

The light tease made Haeun’s heart flutter. He looked down, fidgeting with his fingers before finally saying, "It just feels surreal, you know? Us, like this..."

"It does," Yeongsoo agreed, a soft smile playing at his lips. "But I like it." His hand reached over, resting gently on Haeun’s. "We’ve both been through a lot, and we deserve this."

Haeun glanced down at their intertwined hands, feeling a rush of emotions he couldn’t quite put into words. This was more than just a date; it felt like a new beginning.

As they neared the cinema, Haeun felt his nerves start to settle, replaced by excitement. They parked, and with Yeongsoo’s hand still lightly holding his, they walked into the bustling theater lobby. The scent of popcorn filled the air, and the sound of laughter and chatter surrounded them. It was a normal moment, yet it felt so special.

"Let’s grab some snacks," Yeongsoo suggested, guiding him toward the concession stand.

Haeun glanced at the menu, eyes widening. "Oh! We have to get popcorn, but I want some chocolate too. And maybe a soda..."

Yeongsoo chuckled, nodding as he ordered everything Haeun listed. "Alright, I’ll carry it all, but you’re sharing that popcorn."

"..."

"Don’t be so stingy.."

"..."

Him? Stingy?

"Isn’t it supposed to be romantic? How am I the stingy one?."

"..."

"Mhm....maybe we can share one.." Haeun muttered with a chuckle, as he turned to the waitress.

"Give us the biggest size.."

"..!"

"Are you sure you can finish it sir?"

Haeun gave the waitress a nod. "Yes, we’ll finish it."

She handed them the jumbo popcorn with a skeptical look, but Haeun didn’t mind. He held it up to Yeongsoo, who just raised an eyebrow.

"This was your idea, remember," Yeongsoo teased as they found their seats, balancing the popcorn and their drinks between them.

The theater lights dimmed, and as the previews rolled, they settled in, each reaching for the popcorn at their own pace. A couple of times, their hands bumped, and they both ignored it, focusing on the screen instead.

When the movie finally started, Haeun leaned back, sneaking a glance at Yeongsoo. Seeing him absorbed in the film, dressed in an outfit he’d suggested, felt oddly fulfilling.

He stifled a smile, turning back to the screen and focusing on just enjoying the moment. It was simple but enough—right here with him, sharing popcorn and a film.

What more could he ask for.

"Mhm...I think she’s going to end up with the blonde dude"

Haeun said as he munched on the popcorn, his words bringing Yeongsoo’s attention.

"Why’s that? I think she’s going to end up with the black haired dude.."

"..."

Haeun shook his head, it was pretty sure now who she was going to end up with.

"No the black haired dude still lacks something, his ability to be there and keep up for her. Yes he loves her, I think he loves her more than the blonde dude but what’s the point of loving someone if you’re not going to fight for them or speak up for them? The blonde dude might not he stinking rich like the black haired dude but he’s everything she needs. He literally stood in the rain waiting for her to come out of her hiding place, took care of her when she was sick. Love is about sacrificing and the black haired dude couldn’t sacrifice his time.."

Yeongsoo listened, surprised by Haeun’s analysis. He hadn’t expected him to dive so deeply into a rom-com, especially one with such a straightforward plot.

"Wow, you’ve really thought this through," Yeongsoo said, smirking a little. "So love, to you, is all about showing up—even when it’s uncomfortable, even when it’s hard?"

Haeun shifted, suddenly feeling a bit self-conscious. "Well, yeah... if you care about someone, you don’t just say it. You... you show up when it counts."

Yeongsoo’s gaze softened, the flickering light of the screen casting shadows over his face. "Guess that makes sense. Actions speak louder than words, right?"

"Exactly, show your love and at the same time say it," Haeun replied, his tone softer now. He broke their gaze and focused back on the screen, the weight of their conversation lingering in the air between them.

As the movie went on, they both fell silent, occasionally reaching for popcorn, brushing hands now and then, but comfortable in the silence.

Finally, the movie ended, and they stepped out into the cool noon air, walking side by side in a way that felt natural, like they’d done it a thousand times before.

"So, did it live up to your expectations?" Haeun asked, glancing at him.

Yeongsoo nodded, giving him a small smile. "It was good. And I got to see you laugh—even if you tried to hide it."
