Chapter 62: Suho do you like babies
"Yeongsoo, call the doctor," Haeun said urgently, turning back to the child. "The baby isn’t out, little cutie, what’s your name?"
"..."
"Daddy doesn’t like me; he didn’t give me a name. Is ’Ugly Thing’ a name?"
Haeun felt his heart clench as he shook his head, holding the child’s hand gently. "Would you like me to give you a name?"
The child nodded, and Haeun smiled. "How about Suho?"
The child’s face brightened, a small smile breaking through his dull expression. "I like it."
"Suho, can you tell me where your parents are?" Haeun asked softly.
Suho’s grip on the sheets tightened, and his eyes darkened. "Daddy killed Mommy, and Mommy killed Daddy. They’re buried. I don’t like living in the orphanage; they make me feel like poop. I don’t like it there; they don’t let me eat egg rolls."
Haeun’s heart sank further at the boy’s words. The trauma he had endured was palpable. And he wished he could do something to help him.
"Suho," Haeun said softly, leaning in closer, "you’re safe with us. No one is going to hurt you. You can trust us."
Suho’s gaze flickered toward Haeun, a hint of vulnerability surfacing. "But... they said I was bad. That I deserved it."
Haeun felt a surge of emotion at the boy’s words, his heart breaking for the innocent child. "You’re not bad, Suho. You didn’t do anything wrong. Sometimes, adults make mistakes, but it’s not your fault. You deserve love and kindness, just like every child."
The boy’s eyes glistened, and for a moment, Haeun thought he might say something more. But instead, Suho looked away, retreating back into his silence. As Dr. Kang entered the room, the atmosphere shifted subtly. Haeun could sense the tension in Suho’s small body, and he quickly realized that the child’s openness seemed to wane.
"Hi there" Dr. Kang greeted gently, taking a seat across from the boy. She maintained a respectful distance, her tone soothing. "I’m Dr. Kang. I’m here to help you feel better."
Suho’s gaze dropped to the sheets, and Haeun noticed the immediate change in his demeanor. The light that had briefly shone in his eyes dimmed, and he retreated into himself, his small fingers gripping the fabric tightly.
"Suho?" Haeun prompted softly, hoping to coax him back out. "It’s okay. You don’t have to say anything if you don’t want to."
The boy remained silent, his eyes averted, lost in his thoughts as if a protective barrier had come down. Haeun felt a pang of concern, realizing that Suho was no longer willing to engage.
Dr. Kang, noticing the shift, spoke softly. "That’s alright, Suho. You don’t have to talk right now. Sometimes it helps to just sit quietly for a bit."
Haeun exchanged a worried glance with Yeongsoo, who remained close by, his presence steady and reassuring. "What do we do now?" Haeun whispered, feeling helpless as he watched the boy shut down.
Dr. Kang considered for a moment. "We’ll give him some time to adjust. Children who have experienced trauma often need to take their own time before they’re ready to open up. We’ll monitor him closely and be here when he’s ready."
"Can I stay with him?" Haeun asked, his voice filled with determination. "I don’t want him to feel alone."
"Of course," Dr. Kang replied with a nod. "It’s important for him to have familiar faces around him. Just let him know you’re here, and he can take his time."
As the minutes passed in silence, Haeun remained by Suho’s side, wishing he could somehow convey his support without words. He felt the weight of the child’s pain and wanted nothing more than to ease it.
Yeongsoo stepped closer, kneeling down beside Haeun. "I’ll make sure everything is alright outside, okay? You focus on being here for him. I’ll go get your breakfast, the more you worry, the more I worry about you."
Haeun nodded, appreciating Yeongsoo’s support as he reluctantly watched him leave the room. Alone with Suho, Haeun leaned in slightly, speaking softly. "You’re safe, Suho. Whenever you feel ready to talk again, I’ll be right here."
But Suho’s eyes remained dull and distant, his silence stretching on. Haeun’s heart ached, wishing he could somehow reach into the depths of his sorrow and pull him back into the light.
Dr. Kang observed quietly, her expression gentle yet focused. "Sometimes, just being present is the most important thing we can do," she said softly, glancing at Haeun. "You’re doing well."
"I just wish I could help him more," Haeun replied, feeling frustrated and helpless.
"You’re already helping him by showing that you care," Dr. Kang reassured him. "It takes time for healing to begin, especially after such trauma. We’ll continue to work with him, and eventually, he might find the strength to open up again."
"He was talking a while ago, he seems to really like babies. Is it okay for me to take him to the maternity ward? Maybe seeing some babies will help him.."
Dr. Kang stroked her chin, if that would help then she didn’t see why not.
"Alright, follow me ill take you there.."
Haeun nodded and got up from the chair, feeling a bit woozy himself, after a moment to stabilize himself, he bent down and helped Suho with his slippers.
"Can I hold your hand?"
Suho didn’t say anything and placed his hand on Haeun’s, his eyes widened when he saw how warm someone’s hands could get.
"Suho do you like babies, we’re about to take you to a place filled with many babies.."
Dr. Kang asked but her words only seemed to draw Suho’s attention to Haeun’s belly.
Suho’s gaze lingered on Haeun’s belly for a moment, curiosity flickering in his eyes. He didn’t speak, but there was something different in the way he looked at Haeun now—like he was trying to understand something.
"That’s right," Haeun said softly, picking up on Suho’s unspoken interest. "There’s a baby in here, too. It’s not born yet, but soon you’ll get to meet them."
