Contractually Yours: The Billionaire's Unlikely Bride -
Chapter 168: MADE OF WATER
Chapter 168: Chapter 168: MADE OF WATER
"What happened to her?" Madam Meyer asked with a trembling voice, a foreboding feeling washing over her.
Bertha sighed as she looked at this woman, who seemed to really care for Briar and suddenly felt pity.
What kind of sins did she commit to be targeted by this scheming lass?
Anyway, she still looked at Madam Meyer with a not-so-pleaded expression on her face and answered, "I haven’t known Briar for a long time, but I can see that she is very sensitive. She must have felt bothered by the snide remarks made by those women earlier!"
Madam Meyer clenched her fists when she heard that and turned her head to look at those two.
Alice committed those faces to memory. They were never going to have it easy. How could they upset Briar when it hadn’t been a week after getting attacked?
Lady Diana, seeing that the situation was very bad, looked at her security team and nodded at them. The security team, as if they were telepathic, moved orderly to where the sour grapes were and kindly took them out of the hall.
The two didn’t dare object but allowed themselves to be taken out. They had messed things big time by what they had done. If they were to increase, who knows how badly their families would deal with them?
So, they could only swallow this grievance and pray hard that they would survive the night.
Once they were taken out, Lady Diana walked towards where Briar was and while she was doing so, Madam Meyer was busy coaxing her daughter-in-law, who was definitely made of water.
"Dear, it’s fine. They are gone!" she couldn’t help but say, hoping that Briar would settle.
Briar’s heaving was getting slower, and Bertha could tell that she was no longer crying as hard as she was before.
And that was a good sign. One that showed that Briar was willing to end this drama soon and wasn’t planning on dragging it.
"Madam Meyer, I am very sorry about this. I didn’t expect that ...." Lady Diana apologized once again as she looked at Briar, who was burying her face in Bertha’s arms. "Anyway, this is my fault. I will make sure to answer to you later."
Madam Meyer shook her head as she looked at Lady Diana, whom she obviously didn’t like at this moment, but still had to maintain face and answered, "It’s not your fault. You don’t have to feel guilt!"
"But _"
Madam Meyer cut Lady Diana’s response midway and said, "Let me take her out for a breather. We will rejoin the banquet in a moment," her tone very firm.
When Lady Diana heard that, she heaved a sigh of relief. If these women were to leave and those media friends saw them leaving, it would never be peaceful.
It was a good thing that Madam Meyer decided to give her face.
With that decided, Bertha transferred Briar, who had her face lowered, to Madam Meyer and Alice. The two under everyone’s gazes left the hall and went to the restroom, where Briar finally raised her head.
The mother and daughter gasped in shock when they saw Briar’s reddened and swollen eyes. Just how much did she cry in such a short time to be like that?
However, seeing her arrival look, they couldn’t ask. They felt very sorry that she got attacked like that when she didn’t even do anything.
It seemed like every time they brought her out, something would always happen. With such happening all the time, would she even agree to go out next time?
If they were to ask her right now, her answer would be no.
It was truly tiring to smile at these women who didn’t like her. Being in a place with fake people only makes her attract hate and more victims of foul play in the future.
It would be better to remain at home, tend to the garden, read some books, find a new hobby, pick and drop the babies to and from school, than to attend these events.
Rather than fearing being bombarded, which didn’t actually affect her, she was afraid of harming other people’s children and, in the end, exposing her true nature to the people she loved. That would be a huge loss for her. She didn’t want to risk anything.
She raised her head and looked at the two women, who were very close to the people she loved and smiled wryly, with a hint of guilt in her eyes as she looked at them.
"Mother, I ...." Briar nervously clutched at her gown as she looked at Madam Meyer, her voice a bit nasal from all the crying before adding, "I didn’t mean to cry or embarrass you. I just _"
Hearing her trying to explain herself despite being the victim, Madam Meyer couldn’t help but sigh helplessly as she grabbed Briar’s hands and held them in hers.
"Child, you don’t have to explain anything!"
"I .... But_" Briar tried to explain again, her eyes blinking and those tears pooling in her eyes once again.
Madam Meyer patted Briar’s hands as she cut her off. "Briar, don’t bear in mind what these people say. They are jealous and envious of what you have. You are not inferior and we all know it. Logan loves you, the children love you and we all love you. That’s what is important and nothing else!"
Alice nodded when she heard her mother’s words and echoed, "so ignore them. If you don’t feel comfortable coming it such events, you don’t have to come in the future. just interact with those who are genuine to you and ignore the rest!"
Madam Meyer agreed to that when she heard it.
Briar didn’t seem to be the type who could socialize. Although she had always wanted to groom the next matriarch and let her take over with time, Briar’s condition was very special. She was a ticking time bomb, which was suitable to be left at home for now.
Perhaps in the future, Briar’s condition would get better and she would be able to stand firm when facing others. When that happens, she would parade her in peace, but for now, let her recuperate and learn things at home without overwhelming her a lot.
The two comforted Briar until she was smiling, and no longer looked depressed.
