Chapter 91: Chapter 91 It’s Not That Bad (1)
Sister Yao originally thought that Chen Jiaming might have made some sort of gesture regarding the situation. If that were the case, perhaps Gu Nuan could soon find a turnaround.
As a woman, and recognizing that this girl was decent, Sister Yao felt a twinge of sympathy for Gu Nuan in her heart.
But after waiting for a while, when Chen Jiaming asked her about a project, he didn’t bring up Gu Nuan again.
After serving tea to the leaders, Gu Nuan returned to the pantry to cultivate her duties as a newcomer, placing learning at the forefront.
She had never thought of using this opportunity to make a big show, but if there was a chance to do something well, she would give it a hundred percent effort. However, the final outcome was certainly not something that a greenhorn like her with no standing could decide.
By lunchtime, there was still no sign of Sister Yao coming back to find her.
Not even the shadow of someone sent by Sister Yao to pass on a message to her.
Indeed, just serving tea to the leaders was such a trivial matter that it was not even worth mentioning in the eyes of these company veterans.
Gu Nuan walked back to her own desk, realizing that the beginning is always the hardest. Look, she didn’t even have someone to accompany her for lunch.
Fortunately, she was accustomed to being on her own while at school.
She took out the meal card that the HR department provided to every new employee.
The company provided a fixed monthly meal allowance to employees, which was prepaid on this card at the beginning of each month.
With her meal card in hand, Gu Nuan followed the company corridor’s signs to the employee cafeteria on the basement floor.
By the time she reached the elevator, it began to get crowded, as it was noon break, the peak period when everyone went to have lunch.
Gu Nuan didn’t like squeezing with others and always let people go ahead. Thus, by the time it was her turn to take the elevator, she had unwittingly lost half an hour.
Arriving at the cafeteria, Gu Nuan knew what to expect for sure, a long line for food, and those at the front could of course pick from the most variety and the freshest dishes.
Those at the end of the line usually found many of the tastier options already gone.
This aspect was somewhat similar to school cafeterias.
The company cafeteria was ultimately cheaper. Living expenses in big cities were extremely high. Hence, these so-called high-salary white-collars in their cubicles were much stingier than people imagined, trying to save wherever possible.
After all, if you didn’t use the meal card, it was simply wasted, as it couldn’t be cashed out or used for shopping. It expired, void and valueless.
Gu Nuan stood at the very end of the queue. Behind her, the people who lined up later saw there was no food left in front and just turned around and left.
Eventually, Gu Nuan got some stir-fried eggplant with pork and a few vegetables, plus a bowl of radish soup. When she turned around to find a place to sit and eat, she saw that the company restaurant’s seats were all taken.
No wonder the people queuing behind her turned around and left.
Not having food was one thing, but having no place to eat was another. She couldn’t just take her plate back to her cubicle. Neither would the cafeteria allow it.
Standing there alone, occasionally, some eyes glanced over her body, as if out of curiosity or some other kind of look. Sometimes the sound of laughter seemed particularly sensitive and irritating; she didn’t know if they were mocking her.
Then, Gu Nuan spotted Xu Zhilin in the crowd.
When Xu Zhilin turned his head, he could see her too. But it was obvious that he immediately lowered his head, pretending not to know her at all.
Gu Nuan understood that if he acknowledged her, the connections he had only just begun to build upon entering the company might dissipate.
