Chapter 67: Chapter 67: Examination Room

When Gu Nuan entered the examination room, the corridor was already empty. She quickly estimated that the average interview time per person ranged from three to ten minutes.

For example, Su Yixia had just gone in not long ago and it had been about five minutes when the HR department informed her to prepare.

Gu Nuan stood up, straightened her clothes, and followed the staff member at the site ahead.

While walking, the female employee walking in front of her looked back at her with a meaningful expression in her eyes and at the corners of her mouth.

Gu Nuan tentatively asked, "Is there a problem?"

The other party smiled, "You can’t hear, right?" While saying this, she wrote a few words in a notebook to show Gu Nuan.

"Yes."

"You are very lucky."

Lucky. Gu Nuan quickly grasped the underlying meaning of the other’s words.

This wasn’t called luck; it was more like dog luck. That’s what the other person was thinking.

One should say that as a disabled person, one is generally not accepted by society, but because of their disability, they possess a certain special quality, and society should give these people special treatment. If a company hires a disabled person as one of their employees, they can also brand themselves as a charitable corporation.

Of course, Gu Nuan didn’t believe that the company hadn’t tried to recruit disabled people before. However, it is likely that, in general, the candidates did not meet the company’s requirements.

The other person was telling her she was lucky now, but in reality, they were also implying that her luck would end there. Previously, there were probably many people who, like her because of their disabled status, were notified to come for an interview to bolster the company’s image. In fact, the company generally wouldn’t want disabled people.

Using disabled people can be very inconvenient. For example, for the deaf, something that could be explained in one sentence must be written with a pen, which anyone would find inconvenient.

Gu Nuan stopped in her tracks and looked at the other person steadily, saying, "Thank you."

Those two words seemed to stun the other person for a moment.

The person looked at her with questioning eyes, unable to understand where her confidence came from.

Gu Nuan walked into the interview room through the door that was open in front of her.

Just like the leaked information said, the room was more spacious than anyone had imagined. It was a conference room usually meant for gatherings of hundreds of people, covering more than a hundred square meters.

In such a spacious place, there was only a row of tables for the six interviewers and a chair arranged for the interviewees.

This setup immediately made one feel as if they were facing a place like the inquisition of prisoners in a TV drama, with an indescribable height of mental tension.

After taking a deep breath, Gu Nuan walked in, observing her surroundings all the way. The test actually began the moment you entered. Things like adjusting your chair askew in the exam room or placing trash at the feet of the candidates to test their manners were possible.

But it was quite evident that the Changda interviewers didn’t appreciate these tricks.

Gu Nuan stopped in front of the chair set aside for candidates and introduced herself, "My name is Gu Nuan, ’Gu’ as in consultant, ’Nuan’ as in warmth. A fresh postgraduate graduate from the Finance Department of University E."

Concise and to the point, without any unnecessary details, it didn’t show signs of nervousness.

The interviewers were certainly viewing her initial performance with a different eye. If the information they had was correct, she was deaf.

Shouldn’t a disabled person be more nervous than an average interview candidate?

Among the six interviewers, as expected, were Li Sitong and Zhan Dapeng. One sat at the very end of the left side, and the other in the second-to-last position on the right side in the middle.

According to Gu Nuan’s understanding, such seating arrangements indicated that at least the three people sitting in the middle had higher positions than Zhan Dapeng, and in turn, they all ranked above Li Sitong.

The two interviewers sitting right in the middle, a man, and a woman, appeared to be over thirty. It was uncertain whether the rumor that a board member was personally attending the interview was true. It could be either the woman or the man.

In fact, it didn’t seem hard to guess.

Gu Nuan briefly recalled the pictures she had seen on Changda’s public webpage, and the woman wearing gold-rimmed glasses looking like an amiable company elder sister, may well be the HR Administrative Director, surnamed Cai.

By process of elimination, if the other man was a company director, he looked younger than expected, leaving one to wonder what kind of director he might be.

Gu Nuan’s mind spun rapidly, and yet she was very clear about one thing in her heart: no matter whether the director was present or not, what was more important was that she did her best to convince all the interviewers here.

Aside from Zhan Dapeng drinking water, Li Sitong seemed to glance at her covertly, his doubt still evident, while the rest of the interviewers were mostly in a state of weariness. After all, she was the last one.

Being the last one, just as Su Yixia said, was the most obvious disadvantage because the interviewers were already suffering from aesthetic fatigue. And after all, Gu Nuan was deaf. So, the man presumed to be a director kept his head down, looking at his notebook, showing no intention of looking up at her.

Finally, Director Cai spoke: "Please, have a seat."

The tone was mild, showing no emotion, with impeccable manners, a reflection of the high quality typically seen in big company employees, where no matter the thoughts, they would always remain hidden.

Gu Nuan sat down.

At this point, the interviewers were supposed to start asking questions.

However, obviously, the interviewers weren’t sure how to communicate with her, the deaf candidate.

"You can’t hear, is writing okay?" Director Cai had someone turn on the conference room’s presentation projector and wrote on the projection writing device so that Gu Nuan could see the words projected onto the board.

Gu Nuan nodded.

"You are a student of University E; we’ve looked at your academic performance in school, and you’ve received several scholarships, which seems very impressive," Director Cai said, adjusting her gold-rimmed glasses, "but University E is not a prestigious school."

For this kind of question, Gu Nuan was well-prepared: "If your company is only concerned with my academic qualifications, then during the first resume screening, you could have completely ruled me out. There was no need to invite me for an interview."

Undoubtedly, this somewhat cunning rebuttal made the line of interviewers chuckle softly in unison.

"Did you not consider that we invited you for an interview due to some special government policies?"

It was another challenging inquisition, directly pointing to her disability.

Gu Nuan said, "In this world, there is only one language that is the same everywhere, and that is sign language."

The atmosphere in the room shifted slightly with her response, which had caught everyone off guard.

The man in the middle who had been looking down the whole time raised his head.

Gu Nuan only felt that these eyes staring at her bore a resemblance to those of her fake husband.
