Grandma Zhou answered, "You’re asking about those two? They are husband and wife."
"How did they end up here?"
"They came for sightseeing. The hotels nearby are too expensive, so they stayed at my place. It’s cheaper here."
"Ha!" Zhou Xiaoyun immediately perked up upon hearing Grandma Zhou’s words and said, "You old money-grubbing hag, giving them a discount? Won’t you rip them off instead?"
"You old fart, there’s no need to paint me that badly," Grandma Zhou retaliated without mercy. "Don’t talk about yourself, always meticulously calculating things, you’re just upset because you couldn’t get the price you wanted for your land."
Gu Nuan and Xiao Yebai stood by, listening as if it was none of their business.
Zhou Xiaoyun was still a bit cautious. While talking to Grandma Zhou, he kept an eye on their expressions. When Grandma Zhou brought up the main subject, he pulled her aside and whispered, "Are you sure their background is clean?"
"What do you mean by that?"
"Haven’t there been a lot of people coming to our village to snoop around in recent years?"
"Are you saying they’re spies?" Grandma Zhou laughed, pointing her finger at his chest. "I think you’re the one who always loves to suspect everyone."
Zhou Xiaoyun frowned as he observed the finger Grandma Zhou was pointing at him.
Grandma Zhou clearly saw his frowning face and her expression suddenly turned cold. "Go back, your family is waiting for you."
Feeling Grandma Zhou’s mood change, Zhou Xiaoyun grumbled and, with hands behind his back, prepared to leave. As he passed Gu Nuan and Xiao Yebai, he said, "Young folks, don’t think about swindling the elderly."
Xiao Yebai was just about to retort, saying nobody could talk about his wife like that, when Gu Nuan tugged at his sleeve. So, Xiao Yebai merely pouted his lips.
Zhou Xiaoyun walked away, his slow steps disappearing into the village alley.
Grandma Zhou walked back to the dining table, noticeably becoming very silent. Typically, she was quite talkative, a cheerful old lady.
Gu Nuan actually found it rather difficult to get along with the elderly, mostly because her own grandparents didn’t like her, which made her feel that elderly folks generally harbored biases. But that didn’t stop her from being polite and respectful.
Picking up her chopsticks, she first put a piece of meat into Grandma Zhou’s bowl, saying, "Grandma, please eat. I’m afraid I didn’t cook it well."
Gu Nuan had helped the old lady stir-fry the dishes, mainly because the pot was heavy and the old lady’s hands were not strong enough and trembled.
Hearing her words, Grandma Zhou couldn’t help but look up at her.
Apparently, no one had said those words to Grandma Zhou before, or maybe someone had a long time ago, but it was too distant a memory.
Grandma Zhou looked at them and said, "Eloping is fine, but getting married is more important. Fortunately, you two are married."
Clearly, the old lady meant more with her words.
"It’s a Chinese tradition, after all, status is everything. It might not mean much to men, but for women, it’s their lifetime’s matter, whether it brings honor or not," Grandma Zhou remarked, eating her meal as if she was speaking only to herself.
Gu Nuan added some more vegetables to the old lady’s bowl.
Xiao Yebai glanced at her sideways, unsure whether she had clearly heard what the old lady had said.
Her ears were starting to make him anxious.
The old lady, clearly in a bad mood, ate a bowl of rice, put down her chopsticks, and turned to go back to her room.
Gu Nuan glanced at the old lady’s retreating figure and suddenly said, "Men are ultimately unreliable."
