Chapter 298: Chapter 298: A Child Does Not Despise an Ugly Mother (2)
Su Yixia unconsciously loosened the grip on Gu’s mother’s arm, startled without realizing it.
Did he know?
Had he already known?
Suddenly, such a thought flashed through Su Yixia’s mind, leaving no time to ponder, when she heard Grandma Xiao ask aloud, "Who is this person?"
It was the elderly lady’s birthday banquet, and naturally, only those she had allowed were invited.
Gu’s mother had never received an invitation from Grandma Xiao.
Su Yixia felt puzzled. Hadn’t she just called out that she was Gu Nuan’s mother? Why would the old lady ask such a question?
Of course, that was a rationale too sophisticated for her young mind. There’s no such thing as taking someone’s word immediately, especially for a woman like Grandma Xiao, who held sway over a prominent family. No matter what anyone said, she needed to question the parties involved to confirm and distinguish the truth from lies.
All eyes turned back to Gu’s mother because of Grandma Xiao’s question.
Perhaps everyone was wondering: How would this woman handle the situation?
Anyone would find it tremendously embarrassing and not know what to do in her place.
Gu’s mother’s eyes, surprisingly, looked at no one—including Grandma Xiao and Su Yixia—but were intently fixed on her own daughter.
Her daughter was dressed so beautifully that she could be described as stunning.
This was probably something she had never dreamt of in her entire life.
Gu’s mother always felt that she owed something to her children. Her son had no money for treatment and had to be let go, and her daughter inexplicably became deaf—these were perennial pains in her heart, causing her great anguish.
Now, as her daughter suddenly appeared before her like a goddess descended from the heavens, looking as beautiful as jade, Gu’s mother felt as if in a dream. If this were a dream, she would prefer never to wake up because she believed this was what her daughter deserved.
Her daughter was not lacking in any way, not at all. Nor should she be considered inferior to any rich man’s daughter because of their impoverished household.
After all, considering her daughter’s hearing impairment, the amount of effort required to study well was numerous times more than that expected of any ordinary family’s daughter.
Heaven should favor such a person; otherwise, it would be utterly unjust.
All these thoughts flashed through Gu’s mother’s mind. If dying for her children were possible, she, as a mother, was willing to do so. To say nothing of merely being subjected to some humiliation.
The looks of disdain from the people around her, she saw and understood all of them—dispising her old, ugly appearance. But they did not understand that in her heart, she was always just a mother, ready to give her all for her children, and that was her pride.
Perhaps, these people who scorned her, dressed brightly and looking radiant, might not have the richness of spirit she, Gu’s mother, possessed.
Gu’s mother composed herself and responded to the old lady, though she had no idea who Grandma Xiao was or what was happening here; she only knew that she could not allow her daughter to be insulted or bullied on her account.
"I’m sorry, I am in the wrong place. I don’t know why this person dragged me here; I clearly wasn’t supposed to be here," Gu’s mother said with dignity, before turning to leave immediately.
Su Yixia panicked and quickly grabbed her again, shouting for all to hear, "Auntie, what are you talking about? Gu Nuan is here, you came to find Gu Nuan, your daughter."
"You must be mistaken. Auntie? Do I know you?" Gu’s mother abruptly flung off Su Yixia’s hand that was gripping her.
