Conquering His Cold Heart -
Chapter 456 - 456: What Now?
It took quite a while for the loud crashing and banging noises coupled with Caspian's furious roars to come to a complete stop.
Nobody dared to do anything about the King's outburst.
When everything became quiet, Vincent slowly looked away from the huge door. The slight glint of fear in his eyes turned into anger when he glared at Zenon in a condescending manner.
"You…" he sneered.
He looked at the bloodstains on Zenon's cheek and his neck. Then he blared, "Now, tell me exactly what you did to anger Caspian to the point where he would physically hurt you?"
Before Zenon could answer, or even turn his head to face Vincent, Percy and a few other people ran to their aid.
They helped Zenon and Vincent to get back up on their feet. And then they looked at the two lords as if they also wanted answers regarding the King's outbursts since yesterday. They wanted answers in order to avoid accidentally putting themselves in a difficult situation with the King.
Knowing what they all wanted to hear, Zenon sighed and said with downcast eyes, "Just don't bring up the topic of the Queen to him until he himself actively asks about her. That should keep you all out of trouble for now."
Vincent immediately arched his brows when he caught a few people twisting their faces as if they had finally found someone to blame.
And although it was a secret until now, fearing that the people of the castle would start behaving differently with the Queen, Vincent spoke in a warning tone, "The King is having a difficult time controlling his emotions because the Queen is gravely unwell. I hope you all aren't stupid enough to get on the King's bad side."
Even though Vincent didn't clearly spell it out, everyone understood what he meant by that.
He was indirectly asking them not to be a fool and do something to directly or indirectly hurt the Queen. They all understood that the human Queen still had their King's backing and if they did anything to her, they would be inviting the King's wrath.
After that, Vincent began walking down the corridor. And as he did so, he asked Zenon, "Let's have a little chat in your study."
Vincent sat down on the sofa while emitting an imposing aura. He was giving an icy glare to the King's advisor who was fumbling about in the room.
"Tell me what happened?" he asked again when Zenon didn't take the initiative to speak.
Zenon felt a sharp pain in his chest when Vincent also began to treat him like the biggest traitor. However, he reminded himself that he deserved to be treated that way.
After finally taking a seat beside Vincent, Zenon explained everything in great detail.
Vincent felt somewhat bad after properly listening to Zenon's side of the story. Zenon's dilemma was no different than his own. Zenon had also chosen to give Anastasia a chance to explain herself, just like he did.
The only difference was that Zenon found out sooner while he only found out a day ago.
"I am sorry for misunderstanding you earlier." Vincent broke the silence in the room and empathetically patted Zenon on the shoulder. "If I were you, I would have done the same."
"Really?" Vincent's eyes were begging for confirmation. He desperately wanted someone to tell him that he had not betrayed the King by keeping that information to himself. After all, he did that for the King's sake.
Vincent heaved a deep sigh and then shared his own side of the story too. He explained how he unintentionally heard everything from the Queen and how he was in a dilemma. He also shared how he ran all the way to the mountain to calm his mind.
Zenon felt somewhat relieved to hear that since he had also been through a difficult time knowing that he had hidden something so big from the King. It always kept on bugging him every time he came face to face with the King.
"Now that the King knows everything, I do feel a bit relieved though," Zenon mumbled. "Even though he decides to punish me, at least my heart will now be lighter. I am free from that burden of hiding things from him."
Vincent's eyes began to dilate when he asked after a deep thought, "What do we do now? What if Caspian decides to punish us both? Not just us… what if he decides to punish the Queen and… Tilla as well?"
For a split second, Zenon could swear that he saw some sort of determination in Vincent's eyes. It looked as if Vincent already had something planned.
"What else? Wait for the King's order." Zenon furrowed his brows and asked, "What else can we do? Do you have something in mind?"
However, Zenon immediately raised his hand and gestured for Vincent to not answer his question. He didn't want to know what Vincent was thinking. Or let's say, he had already guessed what was in Vincent's mind.
So, he turned away and said with all seriousness, "I don't want to run away from the King. We can never outrun him. I would much rather die at his hands. Besides, we have no right to snatch away the Queen from him when we already know that she is ill."
Vincent nervously clasped his hands together. Tilla was sick too. There was no way he could drag her somewhere far.
"Will he forgive us?" His eyes darkened with uncertainty. "He doesn't even want to listen to us right now. Maybe we can disappear for a few weeks and come back when he calms down a little."
But he already knew how absurd it sounded when he heard his own sentences.
"Yes, I know…" He spoke before Zenon could interject. "Caspian might go madder if we do that."
Vincent quickly buried his face into his palms and tried to rein his thoughts. "I am sorry. I was just… panicking a little."
Zenon looked at Vincent with a confused look on his face. Vincent was never the type of person to run from problems. He wondered what had changed that made Vincent so wary of Caspian that he would suggest fleeing. But he didn't voice out his thoughts. There were already too many thoughts in his mind.
He sighed and patted Vincent's back. Then he said in a comforting manner, "We should wait for the storm to pass on its own. That's the best option."
He then pressed his lips together and thought to himself, 'Whatever the King decides, I will gladly accept my fate. But I do hope that he won't take any rash action against the Queen or her homeland.'
