Conquering His Cold Heart
Chapter 420 - 420: Thunderous Clash

Jerome soon appeared beside Everard and gave an icy glare to Regulus. He was angered by the audacity of Regulus who dared to shake hands with the King instead of bowing.

However, he controlled his rage and said to Regulus while suppressing the pitch of his voice as much as he could, "I didn't know there were still people in our Kingdom who aren't well-versed in simple etiquette."

"Ah!" Regulus smiled and pretended that he wasn't doing it on purpose. He pulled his hand away and said while rubbing his nape, "I have always been living in my brother's shadow until now. He outshined me in every possible way so, I didn't really have to live up to anyone's expectation until now."

He laughed and further said, "So, I might have neglected the etiquette lessons and every other lesson that I found boring."

Regulus then looked at Everard and said while bowing half of his body, "Please excuse my rude behavior, Your Majesty."

Everard didn't want to make a big deal out of it. Thus, he looked at Jerome and said, "Everybody makes mistakes. And I believe it was an honest mistake on Lord Regulus' part."

"I sure would like to think so." Jerome looked at Regulus and said through his gritted teeth. The tone of voice was particularly harsher than before as if to warn Regulus to not try anything stupid now that he was in front of the King.

Everard quickly turned his attention to Regulus and then congratulated him first, "I heard earlier that you have been chosen as the alpha of the Atkinson clan. I would like to wish you the very best."

And as if something took over Regulus' soul, his sweet demeanor suddenly took a 180-degree turn. The constant smile that was on his face suddenly disappeared.

A gloomy shadow fell over his face when he blatantly accused Everard, "I believe that I have you to thank for my new position in the clan. After all, it was you who got rid of the obstacle in my path." His eyes glowed like a burning fire when he asked in a deep growl, "Am I right?"

A few gasps were heard as soon as Regulus paused.

Jerome was already ready to throw hands at Regulus for running his mouth like that. Some people who heard what Regulus just said could actually believe him. And it would obviously look bad on Everard if more and more people started to believe Regulus' words.

Everard sensed what Jerome was about to do and raised his hand to stop Jerome from beating Regulus to a pulp. After all, Regulus was the alpha of another influential clan now. And he didn't want things to escalate more than they already had.

When Jerome took a step back, Everard met Regulus' glare and then calmly asked, "Do you have any proof that I did what you are implying? Or do you just like to blatantly accuse people and try to tarnish their reputation?"

"Oh, I have a witness alright," Regulus proudly said while referring to the coachman, not realizing that his witness was already crossing the ocean by now. "I can bring him to you whenever you like."

Everard was unfazed. Why would he be when he hadn't done anything wrong? He crossed his arms before his chest and then asked, "Is that right? Then why don't you bring him before me and let him explain what exactly he witnessed?"

Regulus scoffed at that unbothered reply from Everard. "You sure got some acting skills, Your Majesty. If I didn't already know about all the heinous crimes that you committed, you could have fooled me too."

Everard was now starting to sense more and more people in his clan looking at him. He didn't want his life as an alpha to be over before it even started.

Thus, he whispered to Jerome to bring Regulus to some quieter place and began to walk toward the staircase of the altar.

However, Regulus swatted Jerome's hand when he approached him and then shouted at the top of his lungs, "Are you seriously trying to run with your tail between your legs right now?"

Everard rolled his eyes when he sensed what Regulus was trying to do. 'He really is here to tarnish my reputation in front of everybody, isn't he?'

He looked over his shoulder and then calmly asked Regulus, "Please calm down, Lord Regulus. A King doesn't run. Why don't we take this conversation somewhere else?"

"Oh! So, you do care about what all these people think of you, huh?" Regulus' voice started to become louder and louder. "They all deserve to know what you did! Just own up to your crimes and pay for them like the rest of the criminals do. You may be the King but you aren't above the Kingdom and its law!"

Everard couldn't take in that disrespect from Regulus for a second longer. He swiftly turned on his heels and stood before Regulus once more.

Since he was considerably taller than Regulus, he looked down at the angry little man and loudly grumbled, "Yes, I am not above the law, and neither are you, Mr. Regulus."

He narrowed his eyes in rage to show Regulus that he wasn't a pushover King and he wasn't going to keep on listening and behaving nicely if he wasn't going to receive a similar treatment.

Everard began to emit a dangerous aura when he further said in a low growling voice, "If you are thinking that you can simply force someone innocent to be the murderer of your brother because you are that desperate to pin someone for the crime, then go and find some roadside dogs."

"Because if you are going to blame me for the crime that I didn't even commit in the first place, then I will have to retaliate." He lowered his head a little and whispered near Regulus' ear. "And believe me when I say this, you are not going to like it if I seriously fight back against your petty claim."

Regulus was, however, convinced that Everard was the right person. He glared back at Everard and then said in an equally angry growl, "If you think that your little threat is going to dissuade me from seeking justice for my brother's murder then you are wrong."

Everard suddenly burst into a loud cackle, surprising everyone inside the Great Hall.

Even Jerome was afraid, thinking that Everard was about to do or say something that would put him in a pinch.

Everard pushed back his raven-black hair in a dramatic manner and then tilted his head to the side as he menacingly looked at Regulus.

His thunderous voice then echoed throughout the hall. "Oh, you want to go there, huh? Justice? If I am to seek justice for what your brother did, then even murdering him won't do any justice!"

Jerome almost face-palmed himself when he heard what Everard just said. 'Why did you have to make it sound like you actually murdered that man?' he exclaimed in his head because obviously, he couldn't say it out loud when everyone's eyes were on Everard.

And just as expected, Regulus was now even more convinced that Everard was the murderer. "Ha! Then you agree that you wanted my brother dead?"
