Chapter 421: Chapter 399: The 10-Minute Interval

Although a power outage is virtually impossible for the Non-Euclidean Coalition, this is the Foundation, equipped with backup power and generators to counteract that one-in-several-million chance. The moment the power went out, these systems automatically activated, maintaining normal operations in the underground containment chambers. For a short while after, they could even supply the remaining essential facilities.

However, the building was simply too large, and distributing power throughout took some time. This brief period was enough for Chen Xiao and his team to accomplish quite a lot.

First and foremost, they needed to gain entry to the building, which, being a building, always has doors...

But doors, oh, I hardly want to say it, are practically like personal toys in the Locksmith’s hands. In fact, the Foundation might as well just carve a hole in the wall, not install anything, and leave it wide open. Otherwise, not only do they fail to serve any defensive purpose, but they also give intruders plenty of opportunities for shenanigans. But that wouldn’t work either; someone with the Locksmith’s Class-S anomalous traits could simply slap a wooden plank against the wall and still get through, even if there were no doors at all.

So without further ado, the Locksmith casually took out things like lock cores and doorknobs from his pocket and led everyone confidently into the building. At that moment, the power hadn’t yet reached the detection instruments, so all surveillance had to be conducted manually. Fortunately, the manpower here was far stronger than anywhere else; any randomly picked security team could hold their own against some of the lower-level field agents. Equipped with portable thermal detection radars, they could not monitor the entire area, but dispersing personnel was more than sufficient to cover each corridor. These guards were strictly trained and quickly reached their posts without command, coordinating with each other.

...

On the first floor of the building, Song Xuan moved rapidly along a corridor close to the edge of the structure. The area was surrounded by simple restrooms used by the likes of janitors—it was in fact a hollow space between the defensive layers of the outer wall and the interior facilities, barely considered inside the building. Hence, no guards had arrived yet.

She was very fast, but footsteps that would ordinarily be light and silent were now somewhat heavy, as if she didn’t care that her running might attract attention.

Suddenly, several guards inside detected her position using sonar.

Under normal circumstances, communication between security squads could span entire floors, but with the lack of power, they had to use their personal radios, resulting in a limited transmission range. However, it was enough to reach four or five nearby groups. After a quick exchange between a few guard teams, four squads went to investigate while one stayed put.

Shortly, the four scouting squads, twenty people in total, arrived from different angles to encircle the detected location...

But there was no one to be found.

Confused, they had specifically approached via four different routes that could lead to this spot, blocking off any escape. Someone should have been spotted.

"Is there a problem with our equipment?" one of the guards asked, puzzled.

Just then.

"Clang..."

A faint noise came through the earpieces, like something had been knocked over.

But the guard who heard the noise immediately realized what had happened.

"Damn!" someone shouted, turning around and running back the way they came...

Just a few corridors away, they quickly arrived at the scene, but it was too late. The five people who stayed behind had vanished without a trace or a drop of blood.

"Team 71, please respond! Team 71, please respond!" a guard called out over the radio with no reply.

"Damn it! What’s going on?" someone else yelled.

One of the more astute guards thought for a moment before saying, "We’ve been tricked, a diversionary tactic!"

"But how did they pull it off?" another asked.

"That’s no longer our concern," the sharper guard said. "Since they resorted to such indirect methods, they probably don’t want to face so many of us... Let’s stick together, try to contact other teams, but most importantly, we need to find those bodies fast."

"Bodies?" the others went silent for a moment before realizing what he meant.

...

Meanwhile, on the subterranean first level.

The people there were: the Nurse, Reina, the Drunkard, Lin Fan, and the Locksmith.

Because the large hole the Drunkard had fallen through exposed part of the underground structure, the Locksmith distributed keys and lock cores to the others and led the group straight into the negative first floor with Lin Fan guiding them. With Reina’s electronic control abilities, these five faced virtually no obstacles on their way, even skillfully avoiding the guards. They went directly to the third sublevel, then passed through several doors and staircases that should have been sealed off, and finally arrived at the sixth sublevel—the Underground Containment Area of the Non-Euclidean Coalition.

...

At the same time...

At the top of the building, Bai Xiong, Xiao Nan, Meizi, Chen Xiao, and A Ming had just steadied themselves. Because this area was illuminated, Meizi couldn’t use her powers. Bai Xiong was the only one among them who could climb up the building barehanded. Fortunately, Xiao Nan had created a miniature cargo container and a steel cable in advance. They let Bai Xiong climb to the rooftop first, then everyone got into the container, and he pulled them up from the edge of the roof... though it took some time.

But as Chen Xiao put it, they were not in a hurry...

Now, the five of them were searching for a ventilation shaft on the rooftop. Despite having Kolak’s architectural blueprints, finding it proved difficult amid the chaotic array of facilities. After much searching, they finally located the desired vent.

Bai Xiong nonchalantly inserted his hand into the slit between the vent cover and the building and flipped it open. All five jumped down right after.

A mere ten minutes or so had passed by then. It was exactly at this moment that the Coalition’s power supply was restored, quickly enveloping the entire building. Weapon systems were primed, communications between the security teams were established, and all surveillance systems came online. The building sprung back to life, apart from that brief ten-minute gap.
