Chapter 402: Chapter 380 The Initial Task
K City Anomalous Biology Research Center.
Having only recently been completed, Chen Xiao was already making his second visit to report in. Compared to the field agents who were originally supposed to be stationed here, it seemed that Chen Xiao, a Level B, was being summoned even more frequently.
Fortunately, transportation provided by the Foundation was convenient enough that Chen Xiao soon arrived at Mrs. Liu’s office.
There... he saw Bai Xiong, who had arrived before him.
"Hey, hey, what’s the deal here? I don’t remember missing any task reports. And when both of us are here, it means we were supposed to work on a task together, right? That’s even less likely!" Chen Xiao started complaining as he pushed open the door. "Besides, if I really had an unfinished task, wouldn’t you have dragged me over much earlier, instead of waiting until today?"
Mrs. Liu completely ignored Chen Xiao and said in an official tone, "Chen Xiao, Bai Xiong, there’s a containment report from a task you both participated in that hasn’t been completed yet. So, please, cooperate."
"What’s the item number of the anomaly?" Bai Xiong also seemed puzzled by the situation, so he asked as well.
"D-1147," Mrs. Liu replied.
"...Huh?" Chen Xiao was taken aback because he had no recollection of D-1147. And based on his understanding of his own memory, he shouldn’t forget anything other than high-end problems like "Who am I": "Did I really carry out this task? You’re not just picking a few scapegoats for a report after the task is finished, are you?" Chen Xiao muttered suspiciously.
"Although I’ve worked with you for some time, I wouldn’t sink to such disgraceful behavior," Mrs. Liu said naturally. "You don’t remember because you two were only participants in the task, not the executors."
With that, she turned a file in her hands around and pushed it toward them.
On the first page of the file were the bold letters D-1147, and beneath the number, there was a picture of a girl... She appeared to be no more than thirteen or fourteen, with long black hair and a pale complexion...
"Meizi?" Chen Xiao frowned and softly whispered the name in his mind.
"This is the first task you undertook as ’volunteers.’ Since it was contained solely by you two during the initial phase, no field agents were involved, resulting in no record ever being made of the task from start to finish," Mrs. Liu continued. "Now, during the period when all contained items have been transferred back from the Asia branch, I suggest you complete this file from a participant’s perspective."
Chen Xiao nodded, "I see. So, I went a bit overboard back then? If only I’d quietly been a lab rat waiting to die, none of this would have happened, right?"
Mrs. Liu continued to ignore his sarcasm and picked up a pen, "I have a few questions to ask you now, please cooperate—"
"Hold on!" Before she could continue, Chen Xiao immediately interrupted her: "I have a request."
"A request? What request?"
"I want to see the anomaly!" said Chen Xiao.
Mrs. Liu looked up at Chen Xiao, "Why?"
"It’s been too long; I can’t remember. Maybe seeing this D-1147 will jog my memory," answered Chen Xiao.
Mrs. Liu frowned. As Chen Xiao’s manager for a while now, although she was unsure what he was up to, he clearly had the air of someone ’up to something.’ However, she was tired of worrying about him. Conveniently, one of the steps required for compiling the file was to have a record of the conversation between the subject and the anomaly. So, she nodded.
"Fine, since the record will require all three of you to be present shortly, let’s head there now..." she said, "But you’d better behave yourself!"
Chen Xiao shrugged, "Got it, got it. It’s all for the job. Why do I feel like I’m seen as a completely unreliable person in your eyes?" He spoke as if to defend himself.
Of course, his words were collectively ignored by both Bai Xiong and Mrs. Liu.
...
So, without further ado, the trio quickly made their way to the Level 3 containment area underground. Following the previous invasion by The Splitters, the security measures here had been noticeably upgraded, yet they were still far from those at the Asia branch. On the way, with nothing better to do, Chen Xiao amused himself by mentally mapping out a possible escape route should he ever come here to steal something. It’s also worth mentioning that, along their journey, apart from the three of them, Chen Xiao didn’t see any other people.
"Haven’t the other staff been called back yet?" Bai Xiong naturally noticed this as well and asked.
Mrs. Liu nodded, "Yes, we’ve been busy handling the reception of the anomalies since the rebuild over the past few days. The two of you were only called in to complete the remaining files, so there are very few people in the research area right now."
The containment area was small. As they talked, the three of them had already arrived at the containment cell of D-1147. Mrs. Liu opened the door directly.
...
The inside of the containment cell was a small compartment with a long bar-like desk protruding from the wall part, with several chairs in front of the desk. Beyond that, there was nothing else — no place to hide a person, clear at a glance.
"Uh... maybe my eyesight isn’t good, but this room looks empty to me," Chen Xiao said, and at this moment, he seemed very cautious, not stepping into the containment room.
Mrs. Liu, who obviously hadn’t noticed Chen Xiao’s cautious behavior, walked in by herself and approached the small desk... A few quiet ’creaking’ sounds later and the wall started to slide open on both sides, revealing a girlish living room inside! There was a sofa, a bed, and a carpet with prints. A girl was sitting on the floor, quietly reading a book, seemingly unphased by the walls of her room opening.
It was Meizi, whom they hadn’t seen for over two years!
"Containment number D-1147, we have some queries needing to be recorded and hope for your cooperation," Mrs. Liu said without a hint of warmth, sitting down on a chair. From the light reflecting in front of her, it was evident there was a glass pane separating her from the living quarters inside, resembling a prison visitation.
Meizi set down her book, showing not the slightest discomfort, as she slowly lifted her head and began to rise, walking toward them.
Suddenly, her gaze met Chen Xiao, standing to the side.
Meizi paused for a moment.
