Chapter 357: Chapter 344: The First Traitor
The scene unfolded quickly, and Chen Xiao was somewhat bewildered.
In fact, from the start, he was certain this group wouldn’t truly be trapped; not to mention anything else, just considering Lin Fan’s ability to foresee the future, how could he possibly lead himself into a dead end? He just hadn’t figured out yet how to escape this predicament.
But what he never expected was that the key to their escape turned out to be—Song Xuan.
Right then, an extremely reluctant thought popped into his head...: "Hey, haven’t the recent plot developments been a bit too frequent?" he muttered to himself inaudibly.
By this time, Song Xuan had already picked up Jimmy as if discarding trash and threw him to the ground, then pressed a button inside the table.
With a "hiss," the protective wall vanished.
"Man, every time I see you in that body, it takes me a long time to get used to it," the drunkard groggily said to Song Xuan.
"I could help gouge out your eyes..." Song Xuan replied sweetly, not even glancing at the drunkard, "Take him. Let’s head to the containment zone!" Having said that, she walked past everyone and towards the door, flashing a particularly seductive smile at Chen Xiao as she passed, "The equipment is in the storage room behind the office desk, remember to take good care of yourself, don’t go dying inexplicably, alright..."
She seemed to be expressing genuine concern, but anyone could detect the murderous intent hidden between her words.
And the drunkard, without any complaint, obediently went over and hoisted the still howling Jimmy onto his shoulder.
...
"Ugh... I remember you saying that you have an undercover agent inside the Foundation..." Chen Xiao asked helplessly, addressing the postman.
The postman nodded, "Ah, I did say that."
"So, it’s her, then."
"Yes, she was the first member inside the Foundation that we made contact with. At that time, she must have been a D-level staff member, I think. I’m not entirely sure, because she joined The Splitters a bit earlier than me. We only had very limited contact; after all, she later joined the monitoring team."
"That means, it was not the Foundation but you guys who arranged for Song Xuan to supervise me? No way, she seemed more than once like she wanted to kill me."
"Isn’t that quite normal? Like I said, we all dislike you, and she dislikes you the most," replied the postman with great nonchalance.
"Alright then. So, she was also an item under containment at some point?" Chen Xiao wondered.
"No, she’s just a regular person."
"Huh?... And here I thought all of you Splitters were a bunch of freaks."
"Of course not. Take our ’Guardian’ for example—she’s just a regular person and doesn’t have any anomalies."
Chen Xiao was taken aback: "What? You’re telling me that woman named Qiu Mujin is just a regular person?"
The postman nodded as if it was a matter of course: "Yes, just a regular person. Though I don’t know why, she seems to understand us folks quite well, and most importantly, she truly is helping us..."
"Heh heh heh..." Chen Xiao cracked a grin: "A regular person, now that’s interesting. I’ve always believed that there’s no such thing as unreasoned sympathy and sacrifice in this world, so... you’re that certain she’s helping you?"
"I don’t care, our goal is consistent anyway." the postman answered, then walked out of the office.
"Well, I don’t want to get involved in your business either." He spread his hands, said, then thought again about how Song Xuan was actually the undercover agent planted inside the Foundation. He still had a hard time accepting the reality for a moment, and by then, Bai Xiong had already brought out the equipment and handed the weapons and bulletproof suits to Chen Xiao.
"Hey, about Song Xuan’s..."
"I don’t know!" Bai Xiong didn’t wait for Chen Xiao to finish, just answered indifferently, "But I did have my suspicions before, it’s just that she hid it too well, so... I am also surprised."
"You look so calm, where’s even a hint of surprise on your face!" Chen Xiao shouted.
"This is how I look when I’m surprised!" Bai Xiong answered in the same indifferent tone, then followed the others’ pace.
"Damn it..." Chen Xiao didn’t know what to say for a moment and, resigned as it were, lowered his head. "Alright, alright, I should have thought of this earlier." He said dejectedly and hurried to catch up.
In the corridor outside, Song Xuan and Reina walked at the very front of the team.
"How far is the containment area from here?" asked Song Xuan.
"It’s below us, nearly a kilometer away, but the journey is longer, with many elevators and enclosed corridors. The flow of personnel is too quick; I can’t find the optimal route," Lin Fan replied quickly.
"What if we split up? If I go first as a Foundation employee, can I reach the containment area faster?" Song Xuan continued.
"I can give you a key, then you find a door to let us through," the Locksmith said.
Lin Fan, however, shook his head: "I don’t know, I can only predict what happens around me; I’m powerless regarding your future."
"No way!" Bai Xiong joined in, "Although we’ve cut off the communication here, we don’t know how long it’ll last. The fact that this manager is out of touch surely can’t be kept secret for much longer. The last contact was with us; when the truth comes out, you’ll be noticed in a moment, and by then we won’t be able to save you. Besides, we can’t just carry this guy around here waiting for you; that’s too dangerous."
(At this moment, Jimmy had passed out due to the dual effects of pain and excessive blood loss. However, because of the nurse’s intervention, he wouldn’t simply die; even his chin was showing faint signs of healing and growing.)
Reina nodded, "You make sense, it’s too dangerous. And we don’t want to expose your identity within the Foundation because of this."
As everyone was discussing the next steps, Chen Xiao asked somewhat annoyedly, "Wait a minute... May I just ask, didn’t you have a battle plan before you came here?"
"It’s not that we didn’t think, it’s that we have no information at all. Our people have never entered the Pacific Division, we know nothing about this place. In fact, just calculating your lockpicking thing has already consumed a lot of our energy," the Locksmith explained from the side.
"So you just blindly dashed into an intercontinental division of the Foundation?"
"Mmm... Not exactly. We did have a plan," the Drunkard replied this time.
Chen Xiao looked over with greater interest, "Oh? What plan?"
The Drunkard was holding the bottle, tipping it upside down, and realizing it was completely empty, threw the bottle aside in disappointment, "Ah, the plan, right. It’s to first come in, randomly grab someone with clearance, then have Lin Fan find a route to the containment area... and finally... fight our way through!"
He rambled on in a daze.
