Chapter 281: Chapter 268: The Return of the Dark Realm (XXIII)

Dos immediately connected to the communication signal.

"What’s going on?" he shouted frantically.

"Well... one piece of good news, one piece of bad news..." Abraham panted, with the background noise filled with electricity and some sounds of gunfire.

"Stop beating around the bush, just tell me!" Dos yelled, cutting him off. He didn’t even realize that his temperament seemed much rougher than before.

"Ah... the good news is that several people have already met up with me, presumably others are on their way too! The bad news is... it seems someone has succeeded in matching a type. This mutant... looks to be at least level 15!"

...

...

Dos’s pupils instantly contracted to the size of a needlepoint. He lowered his head, the pieces of flesh at his feet had torn open the huge muscles behind him, clawing towards an unknown direction.

He kicked a mass of flesh next to his foot away and then squatted deeply and leaped, landing on the highest building by the street.

Looking out, the city center was engulfed in a storm of lightning and thunder; only, this lightning did not fall from the sky but rather, shot up from the ground to pierce the heavens. In this blue lake formed by the gathered lightning, a crimson mass of flesh was condensing, with countless pieces of flesh converging from all directions. The surface, just scorched by electricity, was immediately covered by a new layer; those tentacles crazily protruded, tearing open the earth and collapsing buildings. A fierce wind rose all around, carrying sand and bodies yet to coalesce, blowing so strongly that Dos could hardly keep his eyes open. And at the center of this storm was that still-distorting, not yet fully formed mutant.

Dos pressed his eyepiece a few times, the entire scene had turned blood-red, a huge number—"16"—kept fluctuating.

"Damn it!!" he couldn’t help but inhale sharply.

Suddenly, the numbers in front of him flickered.

"17!!!"

Dos’s heart trembled violently, his consciousness momentarily in a haze.

Beginning from level ten, the mutants of the Dark Realm possess the ability to repair and attract all surrounding infected tissue; with each increase in level, this ability strengthens and its range of influence expands... and at level seventeen... it means that it cannot be eliminated in ordinary ways. If it weren’t for Abraham’s presence, this mutant might have already covered the entire city center.

Dos took several deep breaths, steadying his breath, and felt for a magazine at his waist.

He opened it, inside lay two seemingly ordinary bullets.

...

Giant compression bombs; upon detonation, everything within the range would be crushed. Unlike the A-grade compression bomb, this ammunition had an influence radius of a full ten meters. Furthermore, the inward pressure was enough to reduce the internal objects to a nanometer level. To put it plainly, after the explosion, not even a speck would remain within ten meters. This ammunition was for indiscriminate area attacks, so even members of Omega Squad needed to go through incredibly tedious applications to obtain it.

For example, for this mission with a coverage range already reaching the entire city district, Dos had only been granted three. Having used one in killing that giant mass of blood and gore that appeared before, he now only had two left.

He looked up at the mutant in the city center that was increasing in size, hesitated a moment, picked out one bullet, and at the same time, pulled back the bolt of his gun.

Suddenly, Dos paused.

He noticed the speed of the converging blood and flesh river on the ground... seemed to slow down.

Immediately after, the building beneath his feet began to tremble violently again.

At that moment, Dos naturally couldn’t entertain thoughts like "Holy crap? An earthquake?" Even if it were an actual earthquake, it wouldn’t matter much. Inside the Dark Realm, unless you were struck directly by a meteorite from beyond the sky, everything else was trivial... it wouldn’t affect the mission one bit...

He swiftly walked to the edge of the top level and looked downward, only to see a large expanse of flesh that covered the walls of the building he was on also beginning to tear and then peel off, shooting out several tentacles that swiftly crawled. This was a very common sign when the mutants merged. But... the direction they were headed... was the complete opposite of the city center!

"No way..." Dos muttered to himself. At this sight, he had already figured out what was about to happen, thus, a feeling of "Is heaven playing tricks on me?" arose in his heart.

Looking in the direction where the wall was peeling... on the street below, countless aimlessly wriggling tier three and four mutants suddenly seemed to receive an order, extending their tentacles, and surged in two completely different directions like a wave. Although he hadn’t seen any massive creature yet, in some unknown corner far away, there surely was a level ten or higher mutant about to emerge.

When troubles come, they come not single spies but in battalions...

"Bastards! Bastards!"

Dos cursed angrily... The scale of this mission was so huge, a base of 2000 infected bodies, mutation of mutants, operatives not obeying commands, mutual suspicion, destroying their own detectors, killing each other, countless casualties, let alone finding the invasion point, now two level ten or higher mutants had appeared together... there was no interference by The Splitters after all, it all seemed like these folks brought it upon themselves...

It was all those damn field agents’ fault.

Useless! All useless!

If they had just listened to me, nothing would have happened!

If they had just listened to me, this mission would have been over by now!

And Abraham, so old and moving so slow, what use does he have in such a mission?

Right, why even involve him? Wouldn’t it have been over if Bluebird had come? Don’t the leaders have any brains?!

His personality was just so direct, he would speak out whatever was on his mind, so as he complained, he felt an unnamed rage growing stronger in his heart...

"Uh..."

Suddenly, Dos paused: "What am I doing?!"

He slapped his own head. Even though he harbored many grievances, now was not the time to dwell on them.

After regaining his senses, he glanced in the direction of the city center and quickly connected to the signal!

"Iron Barrel! How’s it going over there!"

A fierce buzz of electricity came through the communicator, mixed with a huge mess of noises.

"This thing has been accumulating, but seems like there are suddenly fewer infected bodies."

"No surprise! Because another level ten or above just showed up here!"

"What? You’re joking!" Abraham shouted.

"I’m really not in the mood for jokes!" Dos responded: "Hold the fort for a while over there; I need to go and take care of this new one!"
