Chapter 269: Chapter 256: The Return of the Dark Realm (Part 11)
Another series of dense explosions sounded, like a derailed train that continued to barrel down a gravel-strewn track without stopping, its wheels still spinning rapidly, breaking and crushing everything in its path.
Dos’s feet stomped on the ground, stirring up several meters of dust, but the dust could barely keep up with the speed at which he moved.
Dos wasn’t an impatient man... but that didn’t mean he wanted to stroll through the Dark Realm with an eighty-year-old man who weighed a ton.
In fact, he was puzzled why the mission required two people, and even more puzzled why he was paired with the bearded Arab... The other’s style and his own simply didn’t match. With such a large anomaly range, his partner was so slow that by the time other mission participants arrived to meet him... he guessed he would have already circled the district... Well, it might have been that those who assigned the mission hadn’t considered the man’s despairingly slow pace; they probably just thought putting any two Omega Squad members together would suffice, as simple as assuming one plus one must equal two.
No use complaining now, Dos thought, better to check out the source of that roaring sooner rather than later...
Oh, right, the name Dos was somewhat awkward, but in the squad, everyone was used to calling him that because his full name was... Branislav Dosnovich.
...
At the outer edge of the city in front of a building reduced to ruins, gunfire continued without end.
A thick, cold-toned beam kept condensing large patches of frost on the wriggling mass of flesh in front of it. This low-temperature beam was particularly lethal to flesh and, in some ways, even more powerful than laser-based heat weapons. It didn’t need to make contact with the target, just being within its range was enough to cause rapid necrosis of surrounding tissues. However, it seemed that this disgusting mass didn’t care about the direct shot from the freeze ray; the necrotic flesh kept wriggling, curling into the body, and once it surged out again, it became lively once more.
At the same time, a tangible sound wave burst above the mass of flesh, spreading out and reaching several streets away, shaking buildings already unstable and making them sway even more precariously.
Beyond that, countless indescribable weapons were all being directed at this Dark Realm offspring. The power of a Foundation’s A-level combat weapon was undoubtedly profound, bursts lasting merely seconds had already blasted the surrounding facilities to smithereens, and each subsequent impact ground the already fine debris into even finer powder...
And yet, all this was still unable to stop the aberration’s advance.
This mass of rotten flesh was essentially based on a sentient human, the rest being the remnants of the city’s residents’ bodies, but incredibly, under such horrific attacks, it kept being broken down and regenerating, taking in all the aberrant products it passed by during its advance into its body, supplementing tissues that could not heal by themselves. In short, this thing moved slowly but never ceased its progression.
"Hey, hey... this isn’t working!" someone in the crowd called out, clearly frustrated.
No sooner had he spoken, than the man who had initially been knocked out by the tentacles leapt high. Subsequently, on the side of a tall building, a deep gash appeared as if an invisible giant sword had diagonally cleaved through the entire structure. The blade did not halt at all; after slicing through the building, it continued with an unstoppable force towards the aberration...
"Boom—boom boom boom—!"
First came a massive explosion, half of the street seemed to have been struck by a giant whip, debris flying over the ruins, and a sword nearly the length of a forearm, using the extension of its blade, cleaved the aberration along with the cement road into two halves.
Then came a second series of endless booming noises as the sword’s slash on the building resulted in a massive amount of debris raining down on the target, raising a cloud of dust into the sky.
The slash of an A-class operative was probably supposed to pack that kind of punch.
When the people present witnessed the severing slash that split the path and the building, nobody seemed particularly astonished. Being all A-level team members from the Asian division, which were few in number, they had all met one another in times past. The power of that slash was, at most, worth a nod of acknowledgment from them.
Certainly, a more critical reason was that, at that moment, few among the crowd were inclined to comment on the slash.
Indeed, before the dust had even settled—or more precisely, while the dust was still spreading—a few stones slid, accompanied by a ’gurgling’ sound. Soon, the morsels of flesh that had been shattered to bits wriggled out from the rubble, reconnecting with one another and reforming just as they had been before.
"I knew it..."
A person muttered in resignation. Inside the productions of the Dark Realm, any aberration above level eight possesses the function to disintegrate and reform. Unless you completely carbonize every bit of their tissue with continuous high heat, they will always coalesce once again.
This is the most troublesome aspect. When encountering such issues, experienced individuals would often forfeit any plans of annihilation, preferring instead to turn a blind eye, locate the invasion point, and simply scatter some plasma to resolve everything.
But this time, nobody wanted to do that, because just moments ago, a Grade B personnel had died. Silently pierced through the chest by a tentacle, and not a single person had noticed...
No one knew how that tentacle had escaped all detection, not even making the slightest noise. In any case, now no one was willing to expose their backs to it without first destroying it.
It was during this tense and frustrating moment, when everyone was too anxious to leave yet remaining was a waste of time.
Suddenly
the dust in front of them twisted oddly.
Then... all the stones on the ground, as if pulled by some force, were instantly sucked into midair and then vanished without a trace.
That wasn’t the end. Along with the stones, everything else disappeared too.
The abandoned cars by the roadside, damaged buildings, and the aberration that had just begun to reform were all instantly drawn to a point... as if an invisible black hole had opened up right above the street.
In an instant, everything, including the dust in the air, was sucked in... and in the next second, they disappeared, leaving no trace. Aside from the mysteriously missing objects, it was as if nothing had happened at all.
Everyone was stunned, their faces filled with utter bafflement.
At that moment... a tall, rifle-bearing man appeared in everyone’s field of view.
(Tired, even my eyelids are fighting, but still managed to squeeze out a Chapter.)
