Chapter 267: Chapter 254: The Return of the Dark Realm (Part 9)
On the other side,
These A-level field agents dared to choose the area of the city center with the most destruction because they weren’t afraid of danger. As combatants near the top echelon within the Foundation, they were entitled to this pride and courage; there was nothing wrong with that.
But what they didn’t expect was that just 20 minutes after entering the Dark Realm, an intense battle erupted.
There was no warning, it came suddenly, so fast that nobody realized what had happened, when a B-level agent was impaled through the chest by a tentacle that shot out from a building...
The agent looked blankly at the grotesque tentacle jutting out from his chest, stunned for several seconds.
"Help...help?!"
He still couldn’t quite believe it as he cried out.
It wasn’t until then that the people in front began to realize what had happened. They turned their heads, shocked at the scene in front of them
At that moment, the tentacle, growing out of the pierced chest, quickly began to squirm forward, instantly wrapping up the field agent and lifting him into the air.
Everything happened too quickly, and silently. Those two who had just turned around immediately snapped out of their shock, not even bothering with shouts, they raised their weapons and began to fire. They were A-level personnel from another team, who had executed several Dark Realm missions before, naturally understanding what was most crucial to accomplish this mission... and that was to kill anyone exposed to the anomaly, no matter who.
At this moment, those at the front of the team heard the gunshots, naturally realizing something was wrong, all turning around, and for a moment...
"Fuck...what’s going on?!"
"Why didn’t the detector react!????"
"Aren’t you the one who claims to have the best hearing in the field agent team, you motherfucker, were you deaf just now?"
A burst of cursing erupted from the crowd. Of course, the A-level personnel wouldn’t be affected by such an unexpected event. Although they complained verbally, their actions didn’t hesitate in the slightest, beams of light accurately aimed at the person rolled up in the air...
But things don’t always go as wished. The tentacle, as if it had anticipated the actions of the crowd, quickly coiled and massed, wrapping the still-breathing "prey" into a fleshy cocoon that temporarily withstood the barrage of the weapons.
"Damn it, make some room!" A tall and burly individual shouted from the back, hefting an energy weapon from behind and firing a shot. At the same time, an indistinct shadow whipped up a whirlwind, charging towards the shadows of the building, obviously looking to sever the tentacle at its root.
The enemy wanted to protect the wounded, while the comrades would stop at practically nothing to kill him, and amid this ludicrous scene, several of the more thoughtful members in the teams were starting to sense... that things seemed to be moving in a direction they couldn’t control...
Indeed... the unexpected happened again
A blue beam shot out from the energy weapon, and from nowhere, a large mass of writhing flesh collided with it, "BOOM!" a loud explosion, a massive wave of light burst forth, scattering the flesh and soil on the ground all around; amid the roaring, nobody noticed another thud.
The sound came from a nearby building, and following that, the A-level agent who had just charged in was violently thrown out, his protective suit scraping against the ground and debris, carving out a deep trench. Suddenly, gigantic tentacles poured out of the building, from the rubble, from underground, from higher floors, surrounding the ensnared, lifeless, or not field agent like a magnet attracting disgusting substances. The flesh madly rushed towards it, in the blink of an eye forming a pulsating flesh egg, suspended in midair by countless tentacles...
All of this happened in an instant. The reverberations of the energy weapon hadn’t yet dissipated when several individuals wiped the blood splattered on their helmets, staring in surprise at the colossal creature that had formed before them—
"..."
Just at this critical moment, someone in the back suddenly yelled out!
"Defense!!!!!"
This person must have enhanced perception or some sort of x-ray vision equipment, for it seemed he had detected the imminent change in the creature before them, and his cry was clearly meant for his teammates.
Before he had even finished yelling, an arch-shaped shield of tangible light instantly unfurled, enveloping everyone present.
The next second
The fleshy orb before them exploded violently, with flesh and blood flying in all directions, a deluge of blood more intense than that in another part of the city. A rapid "pitter-patter" of impacts rang out, accompanied by an inexplicable force that shook the light shield. A skinny individual in the crowd staggered, nearly falling to the ground.
The defensive layer he was equipped with was extremely resilient, capable of withstanding hours of missile fire. Yet that impact had almost knocked him off his feet, showing the immense force at play!
Of course, no one was concerned about his feelings at the moment, as everyone’s attention was drawn to the sight before them. From the ruptured fleshy orb, a giant beast was rising.
Yes, you heard right.
"A pool."
That’s an apt quantifier because this creature was a sticky, viscous fluid. It’s hard to describe, but imagine an egg cracked open, filled with the thickest glue, then mixed until uniformly gelling—just replace all components of that substance with chunks of flesh and human organs.
And this thing was not just flowing; it was "standing" up, emitting a deafening roar from somewhere within!
...
In this moment, these individuals, who had experienced all sorts of anomalies in their duties, were slightly stunned. It wasn’t that they were frightened, but the scene was somewhat incongruent with their knowledge.
Whether A-level or B-level staff, they were all well versed in the Dark Realm, an anomaly that had plagued the Foundation and caused great trouble in recent years. However, in all previous "Dark Realm" operations, there had never been an aberration with a form like the one now before them.
It was no longer a simple single-celled organism that would curl into a ball and flail its tendrils, acting on instinct. It was as if... it had evolved some form of intelligence and had acquired the concept of "form"... though this form resembled nothing more than a sloppy puddle of excrement.
...
It wasn’t until now that the person who had been thrown by the tendrils and tumbled several times on the ground managed to struggle to his feet.
"What are you all spacing out for?! Take it down!"
