Chapter 245: Chapter 232: Simple, Yet Perfect Murder Case (Part Four)

Interrogation is not as simple as what we see, where you sit down, chat a bit, scare the person, and it’s over. It’s a very exhausting job. At the very least, you must outlast the person you’re interrogating, right. That’s why over the years, this kind of work has been delegated to juniors, and Old Xing himself hasn’t personally handled one in a long time.

But that doesn’t mean he’s gotten rusty.

In the end, the means of interrogation are those few types everyone uses because they work, whether it’s in language or actions. The tricks of the trade are mostly similar in every precinct.

What really reflects a person’s level is experience and intuition.

Take this moment for example, upon seeing this guy who definitely didn’t look like a good guy, Old Xing’s intuition told him... it would be best to let him go now, don’t investigate, don’t ask, having no involvement with him at all would be the best approach.

But just like what was said before.

Old Xing isn’t someone who believes in intuition...

"Heard you’re unemployed?" He dropped his gaze, which had been fixed on Chen Xiao, and asked nonchalantly.

Chen Xiao still wore that sleep-deprived expression, waving his hand dismissively.

"Start with some trivial questions to relax my emotions, then suddenly spring a critical question to watch for changes in my expression... Yeah yeah, I get it. Let’s not waste time, I’ll just state my demands."

"Oh," Old Xing grunted, truly as if little Liu had said, the man across seemed quite familiar with the interrogation procedures. So when he heard the other party bluntly reveal his intentions, Old Xing didn’t show much emotion, and also, he knew what Chen Xiao’s "demands" were.

"Demands, huh?... You do know that in the next dozen hours or so, we have the right to refuse your request to go home. This isn’t something solved by hiring a lawyer and going to court. So, you’d better just answer my questions for now."

After hearing this, Chen Xiao’s head drooped, "Ah, I thought as much," he muttered to himself, seemingly giving up on further arguing the point. Then he lifted his head again, "What do you want to ask?"

"Like I said, I want to know what exactly do you do?" Old Xing asked in a flat tone, his eyes seemingly adding, "Don’t say you’re unemployed again!"

Chen Xiao hesitated for a moment, seemingly pondering something, then lifted his head to meet Old Xing’s gaze.

"I’m a... detective!"

"Detective?" Old Xing was taken aback.

"Yes, a detective!" Chen Xiao emphasized once more, then started talking almost as if asking and answering himself, "You see, the situation today, the setup you guys have is definitely not for a petty theft, right? So I’ll just tentatively regard this as a homicide for now. You asked me what I was doing three hours ago, so the incident must have occurred within these three hours. You got my address from the landlord; honestly, I know I don’t have any suspicion, whether you believe it or not. But the attitude of those two plainclothes towards me was like they wanted to rape me, so you’re in a hurry, and you don’t have any targets, just canvassing nearby for anyone slightly suspicious to get through this clueless period. Oh, right, the guy in the photo you showed me must be someone important; yes, he must be the victim, not a suspect. If there were a suspect, I wouldn’t be sitting here now. So, you’re afraid of the media..."

At that point, he paused, likely knowing his speech was somewhat disjointed and erratic, but then again, keeping his mouth up to speed with his brain was a hard task.

A second later, Chen Xiao continued, "Ah right, the media, so is there some big shot living near my neighborhood? I really had no clue. Then I was brought here, by some greenhorn without any intent of getting a truthful account, so you knew from the start that nothing much would come out, only three hours in, the autopsy isn’t even out yet, which means you know there is no need to see it to know there’s nothing to investigate, oh oh, forget it, might as well outright admit you know there won’t be a murderer, that’s more reliable, right. So, the man in the photo died, an accident, in the housing estate, a fall from height, right! And you are just a group of poor souls forced by public opinion to waste time here! Why not suicide? Because autopsy is needed for that, and I’ve already said it!"

Chen Xiao licked his lips, lowered his head slightly, and with an unnerving gaze sneered at Old Xing, "You get what I’m saying, right? I mean, we’re all in a pitiable state... now you know what I do, so! Let me see the crime scene photos, you should have that sort of thing."

Having finished, he grinned, revealing a smile he considered to be very alluring.

...

Old Xing didn’t move, still trying to catch up with Chen Xiao’s rapid-fire logic and jumping conclusions. After roughly two seconds, Old Xing finally realized the man across had finished his rambling.

"Uh..." He collected his thoughts, "You’re saying, you want to see the photos??"

He asked with some confusion.

Chen Xiao maintained the same posture and expression and nodded.

"But shouldn’t your last request have been to go home?"

"That’s right, but you definitely wouldn’t agree to it, so it’s better to skip the nonsense and ask you directly for the crime scene photos to have a look."

"Why do you want to look at the photos?"

"Huh?" Chen Xiao’s expression turned as if he had just heard some kind of stupid question, "What are you expecting me to do sitting here, just sit around? Cut the crap and bring the photos out!"

"Are you sick, this is a crime scene, you think you can just look at it whenever you want!!"

"You’re the one who’s sick, goddammit, I’m the suspect, remember, you’re here to interrogate me!! So let me see the crime scene shots, video would even be better, maybe I’ll remember something. Oh, and go into detail about the crime process, damn, I’m being so cooperative, and you’re embarrassed about it or what?"

Old Xing was momentarily dumbstruck, just like little Liu had been earlier. He had never encountered someone like this, it was supposed to be an interrogation, but it turned out he was the one listening to the suspect’s ramblings, who was even rushing to see the victim’s photos, what a mess!

However, just as the man said, if he was the suspect, then this would be considered actively cooperating, which is something that couldn’t be refused no matter what.

But for some reason, Old Xing’s intuition was again whispering to him... if he really did what the other person said, something terrible might happen...

Well, this brings us back to the point again, Old Xing is someone who doesn’t believe in intuition.

So!

"Hey... bring the crime scene shots over..."
