Chapter 689: Chapter 445: The Legend of the Dragon_1
Reef beach.
After talking with Xin, Feng Yi had already made up his mind, but he didn’t immediately tell Santos.
Watching Santos and the others study the marine iguanas, Feng Yi stood for a while, then noticed the little girl who had been sitting nearby painting on a drawing board.
This little girl, indeed, as Santos said, quietly stayed not far away, painting.
Feng Yi checked her mood, it was still calm, so he took a dish of snacks that Bing had brought over and offered some to her.
"Santos said your name is Rosa? Would you like some cookies?" Feng Yi walked over, sat down on a stone not too far away, and said.
The little girl lifted her head to look at Feng Yi and pressed her lips together without speaking. She continued to paint on the drawing board with concentration.
There wasn’t a strong sense of resistance, perhaps because she knew Feng Yi was acquainted with Santos and the others.
Even though she didn’t speak, Feng Yi judged from her emotions that the child did want the snacks, but having been through a kidnapping, she was wary of everything.
Feng Yi didn’t insist. He didn’t know how to interact with children and planned to leave. Let Santos deliver the cookies on the dish.
His gaze swept over her painting.
She seemed curious about the marine iguanas, copying the ones on the rocks, but due to her age and art skills, the creature in the painting looked like a developing tadpole.
Feng Yi stood up, before leaving he complimented, "Oh, are you painting a ’little monster’? They look quite imposing." Ferocious with a touch of silliness.
The complimented girl paused her brush, then looked up at Feng Yi seriously and said in English with an accent, "What I’m painting is a dragon!"
Feng Yi: "...Oh, a dragon... I mean, it looks really good!"
Drawing a dragon based on a marine iguana, you have quite an imagination, kid.
After complimenting, he intended to leave.
The child now showed signs of discomfort, so it was better for him to leave.
The little girl moved her lips, looked down, tightened her grip on the pencil, stared at the drawing board, and whispered, "Dragons truly existed once!"
Feng Yi, who was about to leave, sat back down after hearing this.
"Go on?"
Feng Yi’s eyes were full of curiosity.
"Does your village or family have stories about dragons? Would you be willing to share one with me?"
The girl looked up at Feng Yi once more, but this time unlike before, her eyes had a spark of light.
"Do you believe in the existence of dragons?" she asked.
Feng Yi thought for a moment and replied, "I haven’t seen one, but I do believe that some mythical creatures exist in the world."
The little girl gazed at Feng Yi, sensing that he truly wanted to hear her dragon story, and not just humoring her with adult sarcasm or polite tolerance.
This made her feel recognized and as though she had found an ally.
She was willing to share the dragon story with this man.
The marked discomfort she felt earlier vanished instantly.
"Dragons lived in the sea and sometimes came ashore, but they preferred the water. My ancestors always saw dragons at sea!"
When she talked about dragons, the girl’s tone was stronger, not the timid whisper from before.
"Did your ancestors see dragons, looking like the ones you have drawn?" Feng Yi asked.
The girl glanced dismissively at the group of black and grey marine iguanas on the rocks ahead.
"I wouldn’t know; I’ve never seen one. Dragons in movies look like this."
With her pencil, the girl added a pair of fins to the creature she had been drawing from the lizard, like those of a fish.
Seeing this, Feng Yi knew that the child was heavily influenced by films and tended towards the depiction of large winged lizards.
"Didn’t you say your ancestors saw dragons?" Feng Yi asked.
The girl gave Feng Yi a look that seemed to say, "You’re really dumb."
"Dragons are powerful and mysterious, not letting humans easily see their true forms! My ancestors only caught glimpses of dragon tails while out at sea fishing, and they were saved by a dragon during a storm. They can easily push a large ship!"
As she spoke about a topic of her interest, the girl seemed to forget the kidnapping incident, her voice varied in pitch and tone, drawing curious looks from Santos and others on the reef.
"Dragons are terrifying, very strong! Yet, animals and plants love to live near them."
"Because with them around, no disaster is insurmountable! They can summon the wind and rain!"
"The air around their lairs invigorates all living things."
"Even the fiercest sea monsters dare not cause a commotion there!"
Feng Yi: "..."
Uncomfortably, he touched his face. This was starting to sound like something his own kind might have done.
Continuing, the girl said, "Dragons have piles of treasures, the biggest pearls in the world, but even the bravest warriors cannot steal a single Gold Coin from their lairs!"
Feng Yi grew more curious, "How do you know?"
The little girl: "My ancestors told me so! Warriors went to a dragon’s lair on an isolated island, then they were thrown out, their indestructible armor scored with claw marks!"
Feng Yi nodded, acknowledging her story.
The strength of ancient armor truly couldn’t withstand a single claw stroke.
The girl, satisfied, continued sharing the stories handed down by her ancestors.
"One day, the dragon left its lair and never returned. The vicious sea monsters disappeared too. Some say they were taken away by the dragon, others say they were wiped out by humans."
